Australia Jockey Handed One-Year Ban For Mistreatment Of Horses

Queensland jockey Chris McIver has been banned for 12 months for “stomping” on a horse at the stalls – the third ban he has received for mistreating horses.

McIver, 33, returned from seven months on the sidelines only in November after he was stood down for whipping a horse on the head.

That sentence included an extra month activated from when he was found guilty of misconduct in 2019 for kicking and punching a horse after a race, resulting in a three-month ban, of which a month was suspended.

In the latest incident McIver faced a Queensland Racing Integrity Commission inquiry for kicking a horse at the barriers before a race last month at Rockhampton, in Central Queensland. He was found guilty of misconduct after he twice forcibly stomped on the hindquarters of his mount Or Else.

Chief Thoroughbred steward Peter Chadwick said any rule breach involving the mistreatment of a racehorse must be met with a significant penalty.

McIver was previously banned for striking Absolute Bonza on the head as he they pulled up at the end of this race in 2020

“The penalty must not only deter Mr McIver but must also illustrate to the racing industry that these actions are not to be tolerated,” said Chadwick. “In this case Mr McIver also had two recent breaches of the misconduct rule in 2019 and 2020.”

McIver's was one of four misconduct cases dealt with by QRIC, which issued a general warning to the sport's participants to keep their behavior in check or suffer the consequences.

Jockey Nigel Seymour was found guilty of misconduct and disqualified for nine months for sending threatening text messages to a licensed trainer.

In another incident, Brisbane-based jockey Nathan Thomas pleaded guilty to misconduct and was suspended for two weeks after he struck his mount in the shoulder with his whip after getting dislodged before a race at Mackay.

While stablehand Nick Trimble pleaded guilty to misconduct and was disqualified for three months for striking a horse in the girth while unsaddling following a race.

Chadwick said all of the incidents had a detrimental effect on the image of racing, and penalties must serve as a general deterrent to illustrate to the racing industry that these activities were unacceptable.

Tissier Given Nine Month Ban

Jockey Maxime Tissier has been barred from re-applying for a jockeys' license for nine months for betting on racing while holding a license in November of 2019, Racing Post reports. Tissier admitted making the bets-totalling £1,205 in a William Hill shop–and voluntarily relinquished his licence ahead of the disciplinary hearing, claiming to have misunderstood the rules around betting while holding a jockeys' license. Tissier has, as such, not been disqualified from working in racing while he serves his ban, which dates from Nov. 27, the day that Tissier handed in his license.

The French-born Tissier has notched 22 wins from 140 rides in Britain.

British Horseracing Authority Suspends Jockey 56 Days For ‘Absurd Exhibition’

A disciplinary panel at the British Horseracing Authority handed down a 56-day ban to conditional jockey Callum McKinnes on Friday, reports the Racing Post, for his ride aboard World Trip at Hereford in October. The mare finished fifth of 11 in the novice hurdle event.

“The panel has found Mr. McKinnes's breach of the riding standard required by the rules to be deliberate rather than the negligent breach he admitted,” read the panel's report. “It was behavior aggravated by his untruthfulness both before the Hereford stewards and before this panel. If he had ridden normally, there is every reason to think that World Trip would have improved her placing and finished fourth. Instead he rode in a way that brings racing into disrepute.”

During the hearing, it was alleged that McKinnes rode below the standard required by rules between the second-last and last hurdles, as well as for a large part of the finish. Asked to explain his “very exaggerated style” in those locations, McKinnes claimed he was riding normally; the panel revealed the jockey later admitted that to have been a deliberate lie.

The panel's report calls the ride “an absurd exhibition,” and added: “There can be no doubt that his conduct was deliberate, even if unexplained.”

French Jumps Jockey Nabet Banned For Six Months After Weighing Room Altercation

A jumps jockey in France, Kevin Nabet has been handed a six-month ban by France Galop's disciplinary panel after fracturing the jaw of his jockey Baptiste Dubourg at La Teste racecourse on July 25, reports the Racing Post.

Nabet and Dubourg were both initially suspended 15 days for their altercation in the weighing room, and Nabet denied Dubourg's claim of three hits to his face. Witnesses later told the disciplinary panel that Nabet had hit Dubourg in the face several times.

The incident occurred after a hurdle race during which Dubourg pushed his mount up inside of Nabet's on the final turn. Dobourg finished second, while Nabet pulled up his horse.

Nabet is currently third in the jockey standings in France, and he previously finished as runner-up to champion jockey Bertrand Lestrade in 2017.
