Apprentice Jockey Finley Marsh Banned Six Months For Gambling On Racing

The British Horseracing Authority has handed down a six-month ban to apprentice jockey Finley Marsh, reports The Mirror, after he admitted to wagering over £5,000 (about US$5,660) on horse racing.

Betway notified the BHA about Marsh's activity in March, and an investigation found the apprentice had placed wagers with other entities as well. He never withdrew any winnings from the 118 wagers he placed.

Marsh had already not ridden since November of 2020, after receiving a six-month ban for skipping out on a drug test after taking cocaine.

“This is a sad case of a young man who has grappled with an addiction,” said solicitor Rory Mac Neice.

“The rule which says jockeys must not bet on horseracing is an important and a critical one,” said Panel chairman Tim Charlton. “It wasn't in any shape or form calculated behaviour and that, to our thinking, seriously reduces the blameworthiness of your conduct. We wish you well for your continued work on dealing with your problem. We've been very impressed with the efforts you've made.”

Marsh's suspension will end May 17, 2022, and he was given permission for the intervening months to exercise horses in the yard of trainer Richard Hughes, who gave a character reference at the disciplinary hearing.

O’Brien: Jockey Shane Foley Should Have Been Given A Month’s Ban For Interference

Trainer Aidan O'Brien spoke to the Racing Post this week about the riding interference rules in Ireland, specifically calling out jockey Shane Foley for his ride in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last month. Foley was aboard No Speak Alexander, and switched left to impede O'Brien's trainee Mother Earth. The jockey was given a five-day ban for interference, but O'Brien believed the ban should have been much longer.

“It shouldn't have happened,” O'Brien told the Racing Post. “There aren't many countries in the world where you could get away with that and not get a month's ban because to me that is dangerous riding. If the jockeys are allowed to do those things and are not given severe penalties, it will keep happening.”

Specifically, O'Brien blamed the Irish Horse Racing Board for not taking a stand against unsafe riding.

“It's worse in Ireland than anywhere else and it's letting Irish racing down,” O'Brien explained. “We had the whole world watching Leopardstown and it puts people off backing horses or following racing. I'm not just talking about the big days, I'm talking about every day. You have to be consistent.”

Champion French Jockey Boudot Has Ban Extended Another Six Months

Reigning champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot has had his suspension from racing extended another six months by France Galop as a result of being charged with rape.

The three-time winner of France's cravache d'or was stood down in May, along with fellow jockey Pierre Bazire, who has been charged with failing to report a crime over the same incident.

Boudot, 28, was released on €50,000 [$60,710] bail after spending two days in police custody, having been charged with the rape of a 25-year-old female work rider. This followed an investigation into a complaint made following a party in Cagnes-Sur-Mer on France's Cote d'Azur in February.

A statement from France Galop released on Friday read: “France Galop's commissioners have examined the statements made by the jockeys Pierre-Charles Boudot and Pierre Bazire, who are currently under investigation by an examining magistrate from Senlis Judicial Tribunal, with a view to potentially extending the precautionary measures taken against them on May 14, 2021.

“Though these two jockeys are still presumed innocent, in view of the ongoing legal proceedings that concern said jockeys, the gravity of the allegations and the damage they would cause to the image, legality and safety of horse racing, as well as the organization of any bets pertaining to horse races, the commissioners have decided to suspend, as a precautionary measure and for a duration of six months, the aforementioned jockeys' authorization to ride, in accordance with the provisions stated in article 216 of the French horse racing code.

“These measures may be lifted or extended at any time, taking into consideration any additional elements that may be brought to the attention of France Galop's commissioners.”

Boudot, champion jockey in 2015, 2016 and 2020, has become one of the world's top riders. He won the 2019 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Waldgeist, has ridden the winners of four French Classics and rode two winners at last year's Breeders' Cup.

Australia: Jockey Banned Eight Years For Betting On Himself

A jockey who changed his name by deed poll and used it to operate a betting account while still riding under his old name has been disqualified for a total of eight years.

Terry Treichel rode over 1,200 winners across New South Wales and Queensland before relocating to Northern Territory.

But when Thoroughbred Racing Northern Territory (TRNT) stewards began investigating allegations of betting activity at Alice Springs they discovered Treichel had changed his name to Daniel Jack Smith.

The 41-year-old Smith, formerly Treichel, pleaded guilty to all 32 charges issued against him while a licensed jockey between July 2019 and December 2020.

These included falsely declaring in his licence application that his name was Terry Treichel when he had changed his identity to Smith.

He committed 27 breaches of betting rules, 16 relating to bets on his own mounts and 11 on other runners in races he was involved in. He placed approximately 174 bets on races he has not riding in through various betting accounts. There was no evidence of any corruption in the races the jockey bet and rode in.

As one of the accounts was opened in 2015, Smith could be investigated by Racing NSW and Queensland as he was licensed by both jurisdictions.

The inquiry notice said: “This is a unique set of circumstances not seen before in Australian racing. The coveting of a change of identity and subsequent volume of betting whilst licensed as a jockey is unprecedented.”

Smith has the right to appeal.
