Tezzaray Gets The Bob In Jimmy Durante Stakes At Del Mar

After a flurry of challengers overtook a front running Liam's Dove in the stretch, it was Tezzaray (GB) who got her nose down on the wire in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Stalking the pace early, the daughter of Bated Breath (GB) took to the outside to find racing room in the Del Mar straight and beat Awake at Midnyte and Toeris in the race's final strides.

Liam's Dove took the lead out of the gate, setting early fractions of :23.41, 48.52, and 1.13.32 as Awake at Midnyte, Half Past Twelve, and Tezzaray stalked the pace around the first turn and down the backstretch. On the far turn, Liam's Dove still held a tenuous lead, as Tezzaray under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. angled out from the rail and went two-wide into the stretch.

The race was wide open as Liam's Dove's lead began to shrink in the face of stretch challenges from first Awake at Midnyte and then Tezzaray and Toeris. Those three came down to the wire together, with Tezzaray getting up in the final strides to win by a nose. Awake at Midnyte was second, with Toeris third and the favorite Helen's Well fourth.

The final time for the one-mile Jimmy Durante was 1:37.56. Find this race's chart here.

Tezzaray paid $8.20, $5.00, and $3.60. Awake at Midnyte paid $8.80 and $7.00. Toeris paid $13.80.

“I had a good trip. I was in a little tight at the three-eighth pole, but that wasn't anything big. She's a very European filly; she likes to run covered up. When it came time to run – boom – she went,” jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said after the race.

“I had confidence in her. She's one of those fillies that are very classy and does everything right. I thought we won, then I thought we didn't, but luckily we got the head bob. I thought all three of my fillies ran very well and all got great rides. Irad (Ortiz, Jr.) had a really clean trip and once he got her in the clear she really kicked home,” trainer Peter Miller told the Del Mar Press Office after the Jimmy Durante.

Bred in England by Lady Richard Wellesley, Tezzaray is out of the Cadeaux Genereaux (GB) mare Amber Queen (IRE). She is owned by Slam Dunk Racing and Roger H. Newman and trained by Peter Miller. The 2-year-old filly was consigned by Ballinvana House Stud and sold to Karl Burke for $29,408 at the 2020 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. With her win in the G3 stakes, her lifetime record is two wins in four starts for career earnings of $104,997.

Chad Brown Holds Strong Hand In Del Mar’s Hollywood Derby, Seabiscuit Handicap

On the final Saturday of its Bing Crosby Season, Del Mar will offer a stakes tripleheader topped by the Grade 1, $400,000 Hollywood Derby, a turf battle deluxe that has drawn an overflow field to the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

Also on tap for the big afternoon will be the Grade 2, $250,000 Seabiscuit Handicap for 3-year-olds and up on the grass and the Grade 3, $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, also on the lawn.

The trio of black-type affairs are part of the seven-race Turf Festival that closes out Del Mar's 2021 run. On Sunday, there will be two more turfers – the Grade 3, $100,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes and the Grade 1, $400,000 Matriarch Stakes.

Likely favorite among the 14 3-year-olds in the Hollywood Derby is Klaravich Stables' Public Sector, an eastern-based colt out of the potent Chad Brown barn who is coming off three consecutive graded stakes wins. The British-bred son of Kingman has run only on turf in his nine-race career, winning five times with three seconds and earnings just shy of $600,000. He'll get the saddle services of top rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. and they'll break from Post 6 in the full gate lineup as they head down Del Mar's unique infield chute for their mile and one-eighth journey.

The Hollywood Derby goes as the ninth race on the day's program, while the Seabiscuit Handicap is the fifth and the Jimmy Durante goes as the seventh.

The horse to beat in the seven-horse lineup for the Seabiscuit is Dubb, Madaket Stables or Wonder Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Sacred Life, who also will have Ortiz, Jr. in the boot for trainer Brown. He, too, is in from the east and coming off a grass stakes tally in a Grade 3 at Belmont Park on October 10.

Finally, the Jimmy Durante looms a wide-open affair with several runners in the 11-horse grouping eligible to draw favorite honors. One of them is a local, the Benowitz Family Trust or Nentwig's Helens Well, who'll be handled by Umberto Rispoli for trainer Phil D'Amato.

Here's the full fields for the three stakes from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

Hollywood Derby:  Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Dicey Mo Chara (Tyler Baze, 30-1); C R K Stable's Beyond Brilliant (Kent Desormeaux, 12-1); CYBT, Sterling Stable or Nentwig's Cathkin Peak (Flavien Prat, 6-1); Reddam Racing's Team Merchants (Mario Gutierrez, 15-1); Double L Racing or Natalie Baffert's Hudson Ridge (Mike Smith, 12-1); Public Sector (5/2); Wachtel Stable, Barber, Drion or Powell's Flashiest (Abel Cedillo, 15-1); Peter Brant's Sifting Sands (Jose Ortiz, 15-1); Red Oak Stable's It Can Be Done (Joe Bravo, 20-1); Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Zoffarelli (Drayden Van Dyke, 20-1); Walking L Thoroughbreds' Camp Hope (Tiago Pereira, 5-1); LNJ Foxwood's Subconscious (Juan Hernandez, 4-1); Calumet Farm's In Effect (John Velazquez, 20-1), and Godolphin's Santin (Umberto Rispoli, 10-1). John M.B. O'Connor's Airman (Edwin Maldonado, 30-1) is the also-eligible in the field.

Seabiscuit Handicap:  Wachtel Stable or Barber's Indian Peak (Juan Hernandez, 10-1); Three Diamonds Farm's Field Pass (Umberto Rispoli, 5/2); Peter Brant's Flop Shot (Irad Ortiz, Jr., 4-1); Nguyen or Tran's Bob and Jackie (John Velazquez, 6-1); Rave Green Racing's Majestic Eagle (Flavien Prat, 8-1); Jerome Moss' Lambeau (Edwin Maldonado, 12-1), and Sacred Life (8/5).

Jimmy Durante:  Reddam Racing's Awake at Midnyte (Mario Gutierrez, 10-1);  C T R stables of Aldabbagh's Miss Bellatrix (John Velazquez, 15-1); Slam Dunk Racing or Newman's Toeris (Abel Cedillo, 15-1); Gary Barber's Travel Smart (Flavien Prat, 6-1); Gary Barber's Liam's Dove (Juan Hernandez, 12-1); David Meah's Reem Zabeel (Kyle Frey, 15-1); ERJ Racing, Madaket Stables and Kenney's Virulente (Drayden Van Dyke, 6-1); Beerman Family Trust, Sayjay Racing, Knapp and Rexius' Half Past Twelve (Tiago Pereira, 20-1); Catherine Parke or Augustin Stable's Sparkle Blue (Jose Ortiz, 4-1), and Nentwig, Pagano, CYBT, Benowitz Family Trust or Madaket Stables' Helens Well (Umberto Rispoli, 7/2).

Fluffy Socks Overcomes Traffic, Survives Inquiry In Jimmy Durante

Head of Plains Partners' favored Fluffy Socks escaped tight quarters at the head of the stretch, then accelerated smartly to draw clear at the finish for a half-length tally in the $102,500 Jimmy Durante Stakes Saturday at Del Mar.

The daughter of the British stallion Slumber was handled by Irad Ortiz, Jr. for trainer Chad Brown and had to survive a claim of foul to earn her $60,000 first prize in the Grade 3 feature for 2-year-old fillies. Ortiz, Jr. and Brown had just teamed up with another eastern-based filly, Orglandes, at the shore oval Thursday to capture the Grade 3 Red Carpet Handicap for older distaff runners.

Fluffy Socks ran the mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course in 1:35.35 to establish a stakes record. The previous mark was 1:35.68 set by Elsa in 2018.

“No special instructions for me,” Ortiz Jr. said. “He (Brown) just said 'Ride her like you did before.' She felt like a winner all the way around. We had some traffic on the turn (for home), but I got through and got her to where I wanted to be. She's a nice filly. Big kick.”

Finishing second in the Durante was Godolphin's Javanica and running third was Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Quattroelle.

Fluffy Socks paid $5.40, $3.40 and $2.60 across the board. Javanica returned $5.20 and $3.80. Quattroelle paid $4.80.

The winner increased her bankroll to $226,880 for her third win in five starts.

Three Graded Stakes On Turf Highlight Saturday’s Blockbuster Card At Del Mar

Headed by the $300,000, Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, Del Mar will present one of the best racing cards seen at the Southern California shore oval in decades Saturday on the penultimate day of sport for the seventh Bing Crosby Season.

Nine races – averaging more than 10 horses apiece – including three graded turf stakes will make for a delightful afternoon of competition and wagering at the seaside oval with the fun kicking off at 12:30 p.m. PT.

The Hollywood Derby, run at nine furlongs on the turf, has drawn 13 3-year-olds – eight colts, four geldings and one filly. All the males will carry 122 pounds, while the filly gets a three-pound sex allowance. It will be run as the ninth and final race on the program.

A trio of Eastern-based trainers should have a big say in the headliner – Christophe Clement, Chad Brown and Thomas Bush. Clement has sent out a pair for the Grade 1 in Otter Bend Stables' Gufo and West Point Thoroughbreds, Freeman, Sandbrook or Manning's Decorated Invader. Brown has entered Klaravich Stables' Domestic Spending and Bush will be represented by the Mary Abeel Sullivan Revocable Trust's Get Smokin.

Here's the full field for the seventh local running of the race from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

Wertheimer & Frere's Kanderel (Giovanni Franco, 30-1); Cannon Thoroughbreds' Smooth Like Strait (Umberto Rispoli, 7/2); Little Red Feather Racing or Naify's Scarto (Manny Franco, 10-1); Nguyen or Tran's Taishan (Jose Valdivia, Jr., 12-1); Exline-Border Racing, Bernsen, Hudock or Wilson's Storm the Court (Juan Hernandez, 8-1); Wachtel Stable or Gary Barber's California Kook (Ricky Gonzalez, 20-1); Roadrunner Racing or Sayjay Racing's Strongconstitution (Abel Cedillo, 20-1); Domestic Spending (Irad Ortiz, Jr., 5-1); Get Smokin (Mike Smith, 12-1); Decorated Invader (Joel Rosario, 3-1); R A Hill Stable or Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Ever Dangerous (Victor Espinoza, 12-1); MyRacehorse.com or Spendthrift Farm's Lane Way (Drayden Van Dyke, 20-1), and Gufo (Flavien Prat, 4-1).

This actually will be the 79th edition of the Hollywood Derby with the first 72 presentations having taken place at the now-demolished Hollywood Park facility in Inglewood near LAX airport. When the race shifted to Del Mar in 2014, it got a big boost in its first local edition when soon-to-be Horse of the Year California Chrome won it smartly and thus ensured himself the first of his two HOY titles.

The chestnut colt Gufo, a son of the War Front stallion Declaration of War, shows four wins and a photo-finish second on his ledger for 2020. The stretch runner won the Grade I Belmont Derby last out on October 3 at the big New York track.  Stablemate Decorated Invader has won five of nine starts and more than $500,000.

The Kingman gelding Domestic Spending has won three of four lifetime outings, including a tally in the Saratoga Derby Invitational in his most recent effort on August 15 at the upstate New York track.

Get Smokin, by Get Stormy, comes into the race off a score in the Grade 2 Hill Prince on the lawn at Belmont Park on October 18.

The local contingent is headed by multiple-stakes winner and $397,823 earner Smooth Like Strait and 2019 Juvenile champion Storm the Court, who has more than $1.3 million in the bank. That pair finished one-two in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar this summer, with the winner Smooth Like Strait coming back to capture the Grade 2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita on October 18.

Earlier on the Saturday program there are a pair of grass stakes that also have drawn full fields.

The day's seventh race is the seventh local running of the Seabiscuit Handicap, a $200,000, Grade 2 offering that has drawn 13 older runners for a mile and one-sixteenth on the green.

Topweighted for the test is the eastern invader out of the powerhouse Chad Brown barn Flavius, a Juddmonte Farms homebred who'll pack 123 pounds and the nation's top money-winning jockey, Irad Ortiz, Jr., as he tries to add to his $541,151 bankroll.

Among his rivals are Agave Racing Stable, ERJ Racing, Madaket Stables or Rockin Robin Racing Stable's Bowies Hero, a multiple-stakes winner of more than $1.5 million; Sayjay Racing, Hall or Hubbard's One Bad Boy, last year's Queen's Plate winner; Peter Redekop's multiple-stake winner Anothertwistafate, who'll be making his first grass start, and Don't Tell My Wife Stables, Monomoy Stables or West Point Thoroughbreds' comebacking My Boy Jack, a now 5-year-old who was the buzz horse on the 2018 Derby Trail and who will be making his first start in more than a year.

Here's the full field for the Seabiscuit in post postion order with riders and morning line odds:

My Boy Jack (Victor Espinoza, 30-1); Paradise Road Ranch's Camino Del Paraiso (Tiago Periera, 15-1);  Klaravich Stables' Spirit Animal (Manny Franco, 8-1); Bonne Chance Farm or Stud R D I's Imperador (Drayden Van Dyke, 15-1); Agave Racing Stable or Sam-Son Farm's Count Again (Juan Hernandez, 8-1); Lindley or Morton's Majestic Eagle (Mario Gutierrez, 15-1); R3 Racing or Calara Farms' Blitzkrieg (Abel Cedillo, 10-1); Anothertwistafate (Joel Rosario, 4-1); Baltas, Baltas, Ivarone, Ivarone, McClanahan, et al's Next Share (Jose Valdivia, Jr., 12-1); One Bad Boy (Flavien Prat, 12-1); Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Tartini (Edwin Maldonado, 30-1); Flavius (5/2), and Bowies Hero (Umberto Rispoli, 6-1).

The afternoon's fifth race is for 2-year-old fillies and is named the Jimmy Durante Stakes. Fittingly, the $100,000 Grade 3 test is run at a mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Both the race and the grass course were named for the multi-talented entertainer who for many years made Del Mar his summer stop of choice.

Again, trainer Brown's entrant well could be the one to beat in the juvenile feature. That would be Head of Plains Partners' homebred Fluffy Socks, shipped in from Belmont and with a stakes tally on the grass – and a close miss in another – already on her ledger. Once again top rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. has the call and they'll break from Post 8 in the 13-horse lineup.

Here's the field for the Durante in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Inner Beauty (Tiago Pereira, 20-1); C T R Stables, Wonderland Racing Stables, Bambauer, et al's Plum Sexy (Juan Hernandez, 6-1); Harris Farms' Closing Remarks (Umberto Rispoli, 15-1); Altamira Racing Stable, CYBT, Lantzman or Nentwig's Nimbostratus (Ricky Gonzalez, 12-1); Godolphin's Javanica (Flavien Prat, 6-1); Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners or Winners' Consternation (Drayden Van Dyke, 20-1); Perry or Ramona Bass' Pizzazz (Mike Smith, 6-1); Fluffy Socks (5/2); Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Quattroelle (Tyler Baze, 8-1); Bridlewood Farm's Bay Storm (Joel Rosario, 5-1); Breeze Easy's Polished Lady (Victory Espinoza, 30-1); Slam Dunk Racing's Magical Thought (Abel Cedillo, 12-1), and Ryan, Drown or Team Hanley's Invincible Gal (Manny Franco, 6-1).
