‘Two Bay Fillies That Look Exactly The Same’: Trainer Apologizes After Horse Mix-Up At Galway

Trainer Jessica Harrington issued an apology via the Racing Post on Tuesday after her stable ran the wrong horse in a 2-year-old fillies' maiden at Galway. Alizarine was supposed to run, but instead it was her year-older stablemate, Aurora Princess, who started and won the race. Aurora Princess was to have started later on the same card, and was scratched.

“We ran the wrong horse,” Harrington told the Racing Post. “They are two bay fillies that look exactly the same. One has a tiny little bit of white on the back of her hind coronary band but they are the same size and very similar.

“My representative Bubba Amond held his hands up straight away. He had the saddle on by the time I saw her in the ring. It's human error and I apologize to everyone.”

The issue was discovered before the race was declared official, when the winning filly's microchip was scanned as she was leaving the parade ring. The winner was subsequently disqualified, and the case referred to the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board for further review.

Galway ‘Winner’ Disqualified After Wrong Horse Saddled

A mix-up between two fillies trained by Jessica Harrington led to the first past the post in Galway's second race, the Colm Quinn Irish EBF Fillies Maiden, later being disqualified.

The juvenile contest initially appeared to have been won by Kirsten Rausing's debutante Alizarine (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). Following an objection and stewards' enquiry, the filly transpired to be her 3-year-old stable-mate Aurora Princess (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}), a dual winner in June who was set to be making her tenth start. She was subsequently withdrawn.

An initial enquiry disqualified the filly under Rule 262(iv)c, with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) confirming that the “horse could not be positively identified post race”. The short-priced favourite Twinkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), trained by Aidan O'Brien, was promoted to first place.

Harrington was set to have seven runners at Galway on Tuesday, including Alizarine, a 2-year-old half-sister to recent listed Glasgow S. winner Aleas (GB) (Archipenko).

Harrington Banned For Two Weeks And Fined After Covid Protocol Breach

Trainer Jessica Harrington has been banned from attending the races for two weeks and fined €3,500 after breaking COVID-19 protocols at Aintree's Grand National meeting, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board announced on Monday. Harrington “acted in a manner which was prejudicial to the proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing” the IHRB hearing found and her ban will last until May 24.

Harrington, who had both Magic of Light (Ire) (Flemensfirth) and Jett (Ire) (Flemensfirth) in the Grand National, did not stay in the 'Irish Bubble' set up for the duration of the three-day meeting in line with COVID-19 protocols. Originally planning to travel the day of the Grand National and return to Ireland that evening, thus not needing the 'Irish Bubble' the trainer said she was aware of the protocols. However, she changed her plans and traveled on the Friday to carrying out some independent business with owners who had a horse they wanted her to look at. As a result, Harrington stayed with those owners instead. At the time, Harrington felt she was not breaking the rules, as she never entered the 'Irish Bubble' on race day. She now accepts that she was in breach of COVID-19 protocols.

Hearing chairman Mr. Justice Raymond Groarke noted that “a breach of these protocols could have enormous consequences for racing in Ireland and that Mrs. Harrington accepts that she has been in breach of the rules.”
