OBS April Sale Kicks Off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training kicks off a four-day run Tuesday with sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. daily.

The sale comes on the back of a very strong OBS March Sale where 378 juveniles summoned $49.941 million, including four seven-figure sellers.

“The March Sale was very good,” said OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski. “There was a lot of activity at all levels in March and we anticipate that strength to carry over into April.”

There was a high level of activity on the OBS grounds leading up to the March Sale and consignors saw the same during the seven-day Spring Sale under-tack show last week.

“There was a good buzz in the air at the March sale, better than we've had in some time,” Coastal Equine's Jesse Hoppel said. “I feel the same type of environment coming here in April. I anticipate another strong horse sale.”

With 1231 juveniles in the catalogue, the Spring Sale is a major player on the calendar each year for both buyers and sellers.

“The April Sale is the largest 2-year-old sale in the world and probably the most productive,” Wojciechowski said. “If people are only going to be able to attend one 2-year-old sale, this is probably going to be the one they will attend. The consignors are always impressive. Each year they outdo themselves with the quality of horses they bring.”

Last year's $1.5-million Spring Sale topper Corniche (Quality Road) went on to win the Eclipse Award for top 2-year-old male after a perfect three-for-three season capped by a win in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Spring Sale graduate Country Grammer (Tonalist) took the G1 Dubai World Cup this term after finishing second to fellow OBSAPR seller Emblem Road (Quality Road) in the G1 Saudi Cup a month earlier.

“We ran one-two in the Saudi Cup, won the G1 Dubai World Cup,”Wojciechowski said. “There are horses that win all over the world that come out of the April sale.”

At the 2021 Spring Sale, a total of 724 juveniles changed hands for a gross of $73,874,900. The average was $102,037 and the median was $50,000.

Tuesday's opening session will offer Hips 1-308, followed by Hips 309-616 Wednesday, Hips 617-924 Thursday and Hips 925-1231 Friday.

Grassroots Has Yet Another Bullet Worker Friday

David McKathan's Grassroots Training & Sales had their fourth bullet worker so far when a Jimmy Creed filly (Hip 939) was one of five juveniles to breeze in :9 4/5 Friday during the sixth session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale under-tack show.

Hip 939 is one of three :9 4/5 workers for Grassroots this week with the others being a Tapiture filly (Hip 87) (video) and a Macho Uno colt (Hip 674) (video). McKathan also had a :9 3/5 breezer in Hip 346, a daughter of Street Boss.

“It's been good for us,” McKathan said of the Spring Sale under-tack show. “We have some nice horses. They were training good on the farm and we can usually relate how they are training out there to what we are going to get here. But, it is always a pleasant surprise when you break :10 flat. It is harder to do than people know.”

McKathan purchased Hip 939 for $38,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Bred in Ontario by Stan Dodson, the chestnut is a daughter of SW Quite a Ruckus (Richter Scale).

“She is a really nice filly,” McKathan said of his latest bullet worker. “She has been training well. We knew she was a special filly. She is a pretty filly too. I have had some luck with Jimmy Creeds.”

The other juveniles to breeze in :9 4/5 Friday were a Candy Ride (Arg) filly (Hip 901) consigned by King's Equine (video); a son of Honor Code (Hip 1006) from the McKathan Bros. shedrow (video); a Bolt d'Oro filly (Hip 1017) sent out by de Meric Sales (video); and a filly by Midshipman (Hip 1048) from the Top Line Sales barn (video).

A colt from the first crop of GI Haskell Invitatonal S. winner Girvin (Hip 1004) breezed the fastest quarter of Friday's session in :20 3/5. He was consigned by Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine, which also had a bullet worker Wednesday in Hip 548, a Lord Nelson colt who went in :20 3/5.

An $8,000 OBS October purchase, Hip 1004 was withdrawn from the OBS March Sale in favor of this auction. He is a half-brother to MSW Tiger Blood (Cowtown Cat) and SP Smarten Up (American Freedom). A filly by Ocala Stud's Girvin (Hip 198) summoned $240,000 during the OBS March Sale after breezing in :20 4/5.

The seventh and final session of the OBS Spring Sale under-tack show starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Eight Juveniles Fire Bullets at OBS Wednesday

Five juveniles shared the fastest furlong time of :9 4/5 Wednesday during the fourth session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale breeze show and three others worked a quarter in a bullet :20 3/5.

The quartet of :9 4/5 workers were an Uncle Mo filly from Clary Bloodstock (Hip 537) (video); a Goldencents colt consigned by Eddie Woods (Hip 546) (video); a filly by Street Sense from the Lucan Bloodstock shedrow (Hip 611) (video); a Macho Uno colt consigned by Grassroots Training and Sales (Hip 674) (video); and a Mo Town Filly from Top Line Sales (Hip 687) (video). This is the first crop for Mo Town, who was represented by his first winner Wednesday at Keeneland.

The bullet breeze was an emotional one for Clary Bloodstock principal Jaylyn Clary. The young horsewoman is the daughter of trainer Mike Neathlerin, who passed away in September due to COVID-19. Clary grew up working side-by-side with her father at the track and their training center in Texas. He helped her get her new business off the ground three years ago. Additionally, she trains 15 active racehorses, some for outside owners and some that failed to sell at the juvenile sales.

“My dad already had everything started with our training center in Texas,” Clary said. “About three years ago, we developed Clary Bloodstock and he helped me with that. This will be out first year selling without him. It was bittersweet to work a :9 4/5 without him.”

She continued, “My dad started out training, so if we can't sell them, we train them. The end goal is to always sell, but it doesn't always happen that way. That's how my dad got Kip Deville (a MSW for Neatherlin turned MGISW after a private sale to Rick Dutrow), but then we had [MGSW] Airoforce [an OBSAPR pinhook].”

Clary purchased Hip 537 along with her husband, father and their longtime owner and partner Brad Walker for $80,000 at Keeneland September. Bred by WinStar Farm, the bay is out of MGSW & GISP House Rules (Distorted Humor). Her year-older half-sister Customer Driven (Quality Road) broke her maiden in February.

“We knew she had a really nice pedigree,” Clary said. “We decided if she went for a decent price we would try to get her. She was a really well-balanced filly and she had a presence about her. You could tell she was a very business-oriented filly and that has come through quite a bit. She is all business on the track.”

As for the bullet work, Clary said, “We always knew she was pretty special. She has shown she was fast. She has never backed down from work and always wants to go train. She watches herself and nothing gets her too worked up. She walked up there and showed herself like I knew she would. She laid it out on the track for us.”

Clary added, “She has a good scope, good vet, good breeze and good pedigree. It is all we could ask for.”

Clary's consignment consists of four horses total, including a Dialed In colt, who was he final purchase by her father before his death (Hip 871).

“It is bittersweet, but he would want me to sell the Dialed In,” Clary said. “That's what he would want at the end of the day, so hopefully she works fast and makes some money.”

The trio of :20 3/5 breezers was comprised of a Mizzen Mast filly from Wavertress Stables (Hip 543) (video); a Lord Nelson colt consigned by Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine (Hip 548) (video); and a Distorted Humor colt from the Pick View shedrow (Hip 671) (video).

Hip 548 is from the second crop of the late MGISW Lord Nelson. Hoppel acquired the dark bay for $80,000 at the Keeneland September sale. The Arkansas-bred is a half to MSP Macho Miah (Macho Uno).

“He looked like a good individual [at Keeneland] and something that would grow up into the type of horse we want to sell as a 2-year-old,” Hoppel said. “He is one of the better individuals we were bringing out here. I knew he was going to be one of my stars for April back in January. It was becoming pretty apparent that he was going to be a nice horse.”

Cupid Colt on Top as Book 5 Concludes

A colt from the first crop of Grade I winner Cupid (Hip 3391) topped Wednesday’s trade when selling for $200,000 to bloodstock agent Larry Zap, who was acting on behalf of Michael Mellen.

The topper and the day’s third-highest purchase, a son of fellow first-season sire American Freedom (Hip 3196), were both sold by Shawhan Place, who was the session’s leading consignor by average.

“Both of them are big, strong colts, especially the Cupid,” said Shawhan’s Matt Koch. “He is a good walking colt. We foaled and raised him at the farm. We know everything about it. That is kind of our niche, to bring up horses we are very familiar with, and the market rewarded us today”

Bred by Jory Sherman and Don Blowe, the Cupid colt is out of the Distorted Humor mare Just Joking, who is also responsible for GSP Quick Release (Trappe Shot). His third dam is champion Safely Kept (Horatius).

Zap could not be reached by phone, but tweeted a photo of the colt with the following caption: “Headed to Jesse Hoppel in Ocala to get his education! A special thanks to Amanda Murphy for helping out with isolating the colt. What a cool colt with a great mind and the physicality to match. Feeling so fortunate to have Mike Mellen believe in what we do!”

Hoppel will be heading back to Ocala with both of Wednesday’s top lots, having purchased the second highest-priced offering, a $115,000 colt by first-crop sire Klimt (Hip 3523). Consigned by Vinery Sales, the colt was bred in New York by Allen Hallett and is a half-brother to Grade I winner El Deal (Munnings).

“He is a May 29th foal,” Hoppel said. “There is no telling what he is going to be as a 2-year-old. He is a horse that is going to take a little more time. He will probably a candidate that ends up at a later [2-year-old] sale if we go that route. How handy he is and how well put together and balanced, there is no telling what this horse could be when he grows up.”

A total of 290 yearlings changed hands Wednesday for a gross of $4,521,900, an average of $19,920 and median of $13,000. There were 63 horses that failed to meet their reserves. Overall, through 10 days of selling, 2,129 youngsters sold for $245,278,700. The average was $115,208 and the median was $50,000 with 795 RNAs.

“There is not quite the stock that was in here in the earlier books,” said “So individuals like the [top two colts] are standing out amongst the rest. I am glad some of the guys who have a little more money than we do are already gone.”

From the buyer’s perspective, Koch found the market to be tough.

“It is tough,” Koch said. “We had five horses in today. Two of them did extremely well, but with the other three it is tough sledding. When you’ve got that horse, it’s great. They exceed your expectations. But, when you don’t have that horse it is tough times.”
