Weekend Lineup Presented By Sky Racing: Blockbuster Saturday Features Action From Dubai, Three Derby Preps

A total of three Kentucky Derby qualifying races each offering a total of 170 points are scheduled for Saturday with the Grade 1 Florida Derby and Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks taking place at Gulfstream Park and Turfway Park, respectively, while the Group 2 UAE Derby is part of the Dubai World Cup card at Meydan Racecourse.

The UAE Derby precedes the Dubai World Cup, a $12 million test that has drawn U.S.-based horses Mystic Guide, Jesus' Team, Sleepy Eyes Todd, and Title Ready.

The Florida Derby will be televised by NBC Sports as part of their “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series during a program airing on NBCSN and beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

The UAE Derby and Dubai World Cup will be televised on the NYRA-produced America's Day at the Races show presented by Claiborne Farm and America's Best Racing as part of the Saturday broadcast. Coverage of the Dubai World Cup undercard, featuring six stakes races, will air live from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on FS1. The 'Golden Hour' telecast, featuring live coverage of the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Group 1 Dubai World Cup, will air from noon-1 p.m. on FS1.

Fans of Australian racing can wager with confidence on Friday night's rescheduled Golden Slipper (Group 1) card in Sydney, as drying conditions were expected across the second half of this week. And, if every cloud has a silver lining, the Rosehill program boasts even more star power after fields were redrawn for the four other G1 races on the card. The “Slipper” card is available to stream on the new Sky Racing World App and will be broadcast live on TVG (First Post: 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT).

America's Day at the Races will also broadcast Saturday from 2:30-7:30 p.m. ET with coverage for the first half hour on FS2 before shifting to FS1 from 3-4:30 p.m. FS2 will pick up coverage from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday's broadcast will air stakes action from all four tracks, led by the Florida Derby.

Saturday's Jeff Ruby Steaks will be televised on TVG as part of their usual comprehensive racing coverage.

TVG will be live from Gulfstream Park with expanded coverage of the Florida Derby card. Fans of international racing can also tune in at 7:30 a.m. ET/4:30 a.m. PT as coverage of the Dubai World Cup card begins.

In addition to racing from Gulfstream, Santa Anita and Turfway Park, TVG will feature racing from Oaklawn Park, Aqueduct and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

10:05 a.m.—$750,000 Group 2 UAE Derby at Meydan Racecourse on FS1 and TVG

Trainer Doug O'Neill's barn will be represented in the UAE Derby with Ambivalent, who broke his maiden in his seventh career start last month by 1 ½ lengths in a turf race at Santa Anita Park. The son of Constitution placed third in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar last November and will be making his fifth appearance against stakes company when he goes to post Saturday.

12:50 p.m.—$12,000,000 Group 1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse on FS1 and TVG

Multiple graded stakes winner Mystic Guide heads up the American contingent aiming to conquer the Dubai World Cup over 2,000 meters (about 1 ¼-miles). Owned and bred by Godolphin and trained by Michael Stidham, Mystic Guide comes into the $12 million Dubai World Cup off a victory in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park on February 27. The son of Ghostzapper won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes last season and capped his sophomore campaign with a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup last October.

1:57 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

Multiple turf stakes winner Seismic Wave, unraced in five months, is set to launch his 5-year-old campaign running first time for new connections in Saturday's one-mile Appleton Stakes. Seismic Wave had three wins in 16 starts for Juddmonte Farms and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott before fetching $60,000 at Keeneland's November 2020 breeding stock sale from the partnership of Michael Dubb, Nice Guys Stables and Bethlehem Stables. In two previous starts at Gulfstream, Seismic Wave broke his maiden and captured the Cutler Bay by a neck on the Florida Derby undercard in successive efforts to open his 2019 season.

2:57 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Ghostzapper Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

Salerno Stables and Madaket Stables LLC's War Stopper will seek to earn graded stakes credentials in Saturday's Ghostzapper with a return to action at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old son of Declaration of War demonstrated a distinct fondness for the Gulfstream racing surface while winning back-to-back optional claiming allowances earlier in the 2020-2021 Championship Meeting. The Todd Pletcher trainee ventured to Tampa Bay Downs, where he didn't flash his natural early speed while racing evenly to finish third in the March 6 Grade 3 Challenger.

4:09 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

Four years after earning the first graded-stakes victory of his long career in the same race, Woodslane Farm's Grade 1 winner Sadler's Joy returns looking to snap a nine-race losing streak in Saturday's Pan American Stakes. Now 8, Sadler's Joy won the Pan American in 2017 and was fourth in 2018, but did not run in either of the past two years as trainer Tom Albertrani has looked to spread out his stable star's races. The Kitten's Joy gelding has started once this year, closing to be fourth by 2 ¼ lengths in the 1 ½-mile Grade 3 W.L. McKnight Stakes January 23.

5:17 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks at Gulfstream Park on FS2 and TVG

Trainer Kenny McPeek will be on a quest to win back-to-back runnings of the Gulfstream Park Oaks when he saddles Crazy Beautiful for the 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Last year, McPeek saddled Swiss Skydiver for a 9-1 upset victory in the Gulfstream Park Oaks that would set the tone for an Eclipse Award-winning campaign. Crazy Beautiful is coming off a second-place finish in the Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream in February. The daughter of Liam's Map rallied from well off the pace in her 2021 debut to finish a distant second to going-away winner Wholebodemeister.

5:55 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

He's had a quiet Championship Meet by his standards, with seven wins from 54 starters, but trainer Christophe Clement is hoping to make some noise with European import Sorrel (Ire) in the Orchid Stakes. Bred in Ireland by owners George Strawbridge and James Wigan, Sorrel will be making her first North American start in the Orchid. The 4-year-old daughter of Group 3 winner and five-time Group 1-placed Dansili comes in on a three-race win streak, all at 1 ½ miles or more, the most recent October 29.

6:25 p.m.—$250,000 Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park on FS2 and TVG

Joseph P. Morey Trust's Hush of a Storm, along with Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber's Grade 1-winning colt Gretzky the Great top a field of 12 3-year-olds that were entered in the 50th running of the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Hush of a Storm was the 1 ½-length winner of the February 26 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, the local prep for the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Hush of a Storm is a perfect 3-for-3 over the Tapeta surface at Turfway.

6:40 p.m.—$750,000 Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on NBCSN, FS2 and TVG

Courtlandt Farms' Greatest Honour will have a lot going for him in Saturday's Florida Derby as the 3-year-old son of Tapit has shown a distinct fondness for the Gulfstream Park racetrack, over which he has won all three of his races. Greatest Honour, who followed up a December 26 maiden score with victories in the January 30 Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes and the February 27 Grade 2 Fountain of Youth was installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite. After graduating by 1 ¼ lengths, the Kentucky-bred colt employed a furious stretch run to win by 5 ¾ lengths in the Holy Bull. Five lengths back in mid-stretch, Greatest Honour unleashed an eye-catching surge to catch frontrunner Drain the Clock and go on to score by 1 ½ lengths.

8:25 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

George Krikorian's multiple graded stakes winning homebred Mucho Unusual heads a solid field of eight older fillies and mares in Saturday's Santa Ana Stakes. A two-time graded stakes winner at the current meeting for trainer Tim Yakteen, Mucho Unusual, a 5-year-old mare by Mucho Macho Man, comes off a solid second going one mile on turf behind rising star Charmaine's Mia in the Grade II Buena Vista on February 20 and will appreciate the additional quarter mile on Saturday.

America’s Day At The Races Telecast Features Pair Of Kentucky Derby Preps

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air coverage both Saturday and Sunday showcasing stakes action from Aqueduct Racetrack, Oaklawn Park, Turfway Park and Gulfstream Park.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast Saturday from 2:30-7:30 p.m. Eastern, with coverage for the first half hour on FS2 before shifting to FS1 from 3-4:30 p.m. FS2 will pick up coverage from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Saturday's broadcast will air stakes action from all four tracks, led by the Grade 1, $750,000 Florida Derby in Race 14 at 6:40 p.m. as one of 10 stakes on Gulfstream's program. The Kentucky Derby prep race, offering 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top-four finishers, will see Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert send out Spielberg, the 4-1 second choice on the morning line. The Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity winner is second coming off a runner-up effort to reigning juvenile champion Essential Quality in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park. Greatest Honour was installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite, entering off wins in the Grade 3 Holy Bull and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth in his last two starts.

Other Gulfstream stakes on the broadcast include the Grade 2, $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks in Race 12 at 5:17 p.m. Trainer Kenny McPeek will try to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks qualifier [100-40-20-10 points] for the second straight year, looking to follow Swiss Skydiver's 2020 win by sending out Crazy Beautiful for the 1 1/16-mile contest.

Aqueduct will have six of its 10 total stakes shown on the broadcast, highlighting NYRA's New York Claiming Championship series that offers a total of $620,000 in purses. The New York Claiming Championship is open to horses which have started for a prescribed claiming price in 2020-21. The series, each named after some of the most popular claiming horses to run at the Big A, features races at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 3/8 miles.

The Big A televised stakes will start with the $55,000 Kelly Kip for 4-year-olds and up going six furlongs in Race 4 at 2:50 p.m. Following in order will be the $45,000 Belle Gallantey for older fillies and mares going seven furlongs in Race 5 at 3:20 p.m., the $70,000 Peeping Tom for 4-year-olds and up at 6 1/2 furlongs in Race 6 at 3:52 p.m., the $60,000 More To Tell for older horses going a one-turn mile in Race 7 at 4:24 p.m., the $60,000 Sis City for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up at one mile in Race 8 at 5 p.m., the $75,000 Stud Muffin for older horses competing at a marathon 1 3/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:34 p.m., and the $45,000 Dads Caps in the 10th-race finale for 4-year-olds and up going seven furlongs at 6:10 p.m.

Turfway Park will have three consecutive stakes broadcast, starting with the $150,000 Kentucky Cup Classic for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:10 p.m. Race 10 will offer up the $150,000 Bourbonette Oaks for sophomore fillies going one mile at 5:45 p.m.

Stakes action at the track will conclude with the Grade 3, $250,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks, also a 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby qualifier. Hush of a Storm, the winner of the John Battaglia Memorial, is 3-for-3 over the Tapeta track at Turfway. Gretzky the Great, the Nyquist colt, is a Grade 1 winner, having captured the Summer for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

Oaklawn will see nine Arkansas-bred 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs in the $150,000 Nodouble Breeders' in Race 10 at 5:52 p.m.

As an additional programing note, live coverage of the Group 1, $12 million Dubai World Cup airs Saturday at noon Eastern on FS1. The field for the 25th renewal of the Dubai World Cup is headlined by multiple graded stakes winner Mystic Guide and will include a collection of standout runners from around the world.

Coverage of the Dubai World Cup undercard, featuring six stakes races, will air live from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on FS1. The 'Golden Hour' telecast, featuring live coverage of the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Group 1 Dubai World Cup, will air from noon-1 p.m., Eastern on FS1. Coverage of the Dubai World Cup card on FS1 is presented by Star Guitar.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Races From Aqueduct, Turfway Park

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a stakes-laden edition of the Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Aqueduct Racetrack and Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky.

Opening the action-packed sequence is the $150,000 Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park [Race 9, 5:10 p.m. Eastern] for 4-year-olds and upward going nine furlongs on the all-weather surface. Juddmonte Farm's Set Piece boasts a perfect record in two starts over the northern Kentucky oval. The Brad Cox-trained son of Dansili won his last Turfway start over Grade 1-placed Signalman in the Prairie Bayou on New Year's Eve. Breaking just to his inside from the rail is dual graded stakes winner Skywire for Hall of Famer Mark Casse. The Gary Barber and Lucio Tucci-owned son of Afleet Alex won last year's Eclipse and Autumn, both Grade 2, on Tapeta at Woodbine Racetrack and seeks to rebound after finishing seventh last out in the Prairie Bayou beaten 8 ½ lengths to Set Piece.

The Big A hosts the second leg where a dozen older horses will assemble for the $75,000 Stud Muffin, a 1 3/8-mile starter stakes. Trainer Rob Atras will saddle Michael Dubb's multiple stakes placed Musical Heart, who arrives off a sharp third-place effort to Mr. Buff in the Stymie on February 27. The son of Maclean's Music has finished on the board in his last seven starts. Carded as Race 9 on New York Claiming Championship Day at Aqueduct, the Stud Muffin has a scheduled post time of 5:34 p.m.

Action returns to Turfway for the middle leg where ten sophomore fillies chase Kentucky Oaks points in the $150,000 Bourbonette Oaks [Race 10, 5:45 p.m.] at a two-turn mile. The 20-8-4-2 Oaks qualifier features Susan Moulton's Oliviaofthedesert, who won the Trapeze at Remington Park two starts back for trainer Kenny McPeek. The gray or roan daughter of Bernardini is the lone horse in the field with a six-figure earning mark with a bankroll of $196,822. Hartwell Farm and SF Racing's Wait for Nairobi will defend her home territory after notching a stakes win in the Cincinnati Trophy at Turfway. The Rey Hernandez-trained Carpe Diem filly boasts a consistent 3-2-0-1 over all-weather surfaces.

The penultimate leg is the $45,000 Dads Caps, a starter stakes for older horses going seven furlongs in Race 9 at 6:10 p.m. at the Big A led by A. Bianco Holding's Skyler's Scramjet, who will look to build off a February 27 triumph over a sloppy track. Trained by A.C. Avila, the 7-year-old Creative Cause gray or roan gelding won the Grade 3 Tom Fool in 2018 and boasts the highest bankroll in the field with over a half-million in lifetime earnings. Also arriving off a win is Irving Rodriguez's Town Jak, who ships from Parx Racing for trainer Alan Bedard. The six-time winner has finished in the money in his last dozen starts, the most recent of which was a half-length victory on March 16 at Parx, where he defeated starter allowance company.

Concluding the stakes-filled Cross Country Pick 5 is the Grade 3, $250,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park. The 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby qualifier has produced winners of the 'Run for the Roses' in Lil E. Tee [1992] and Animal Kingdom [2011]. This year, the nine-furlong event features Grade 1-winner Gretzky the Great for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse and owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber. The bay son of second crop sire Nyquist broke his maiden over the Woodbine Tapeta before taking the Grade 1 Summer over grass at the Toronto oval. Trainer William Morey will saddle New York-bred Hush of a Storm, who seeks back-to-back stakes wins after taking the John Battaglia Memorial on February 26 last out. The Jeff Ruby Steaks is carded as Race 11 on Turfway's program with a 6:25 p.m. post.

Morey Barn Ready to Make Some Noise

Trainer William Morey picked up three for his stable while shopping the 2-year-old sales in Ocala last spring. Two of them, led by the streaking GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks-bound Hush of a Storm (Creative Cause), will compete on Saturday's loaded program at Turfway Park.

“Two have won stakes, and, of course, the other filly hasn't made the races,” Morey said. “We've had some bitter and sweet, but lots of sweet along the way.”

Hush of a Storm, a $75,000 OBS Spring purchase (:21 3/5; consigned by de Meric Sales) by the Joseph P. Morey, Jr. Revocable Trust, is one of the main contenders from a full field of 12 in the $250,000 road to the GI Kentucky Derby prep race, carrying qualifying points of 100-40-20-10.

A well-beaten eighth in his Churchill debut last November, Hush of a Storm is a perfect three-for-three over the Turfway synthetic since, including a good-looking, come-from-behind win in the local prep John Battaglia Memorial S. Feb. 26 (video). The field that day included the re-opposing GISW Gretzky the Great (Nyquist).

Bred by Berkshire Stud, Hush of a Storm is the first foal out of the winning Flatter mare Hush Now, a full-sister to MSW & MGSP Brigand and a half-sister to SW Sky Music (Sky Mesa).

The New York-bred completed his Jeff Ruby preparations with a five-furlong breeze in 1:02.60 (38/46) at Turfway last Saturday.

“He's training like a monster,” Morey said. “I know he's gonna have to be with the waters getting deeper and deeper as we go on, but he's training like a good horse. All systems are a go for the Jeff Ruby.”

Morey will also saddle Sandin Syndicate Stable's Pico d'Oro (Curlin), a $255,000 OBS March acquisition (:21 1/5; consigned by Eddie Woods), in the $65,000 Animal Kingdom S. on the Jeff Ruby undercard. Last year's Runhappy Juvenile S. winner cuts back to 6 1/2 furlongs after flashing speed and tiring to eighth behind his stablemate in the Battaglia. He was a close third as the favorite in Aqueduct's Jimmy Winkfield S. two back.

Other entrants on Saturday's Turfway card for Morey include: Queen of God (Paynter) in the Latonia S. and Visitant (Ghostzapper) in the Kentucky Cup Classic.

“Tough little horse, but not quite a route horse,” Morey said of Pico d'Oro. “Pico's got a big heart and a great stride. He's a hard trier.”

The son of the late, CTBA Hall of Fame trainer William J. Morey, Jr. relocated to the bluegrass with his wife Elizabeth two years ago from his native California. Highlights from his 1,700-plus career victories include wins in 2018 by Ollie's Candy in the GII Summertime Oaks and Coniah in the GIII Las Cienegas S.

“I worked for dad [as an assistant] through high school and college,” Morey said. “I went on my own in '01. Surprisingly enough, it's been 20-21 years now all of sudden. It's crazy how time flies. I can remember the days working for him.”

He added with a laugh, “The good days and the bad days, that's for sure.”

Morey trains approximately 30 head, split currently between Turfway and Keeneland with plans to head to Churchill later this spring. The 46-year-old will also have a division at Del Mar this summer.

“We're enjoying our time and our life here in Kentucky,” Morey said. “It's a beautiful place to live and to train. Hoping to continue to get better and better horses. We've got some good ones on the way.”

One of those in the pipeline to keep an eye on–a colt from the first crop of the much buzzed-about MGISW Practical Joke–was selected by Morey on behalf of Gerry Sandin's aforementioned operation for $210,000 at last week's OBS March Sale.

Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent VIII, as Hip 113, the son of the multiple stakes-winning City Zip mare Mystic City breezed a quarter in :21 1/5 at the under-tack show.

“He's got that Classic, Derby colt look to him,” Morey said. “Let's hope he's that good. But that's the look he has. And that's the look that sells. That was the same kind of look I saw last year in Hush of a Storm.”

Morey concluded, “Maybe Hush will take us some places that we haven't been yet. I've won a few graded races, but haven't run in any of the Classics. Maybe a horse like Hush will take us somewhere like that.”
