French Gaming Police Do Not Increase Soumillon’s Two-Month Ban

Christophe Soumillon, who is currently serving a two-month suspension for elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan off his mount earlier this year, will not serve a lengthier ban, after France's Gaming Police opted not to pursue their inquiry into the matter, Jour de Galop reported on Thursday.

Stephane Piallat, who leads the Gaming Police, told JDG, “We have taken into account the explanations of Christophe Soumillon. He reassured us that he was not at risk for disturbing the public order if he returned to competitive riding. So it's a no-cost warning. He understands that his behavior was becoming problematic, and that he needs to modify it in the future.”

Soumillon told the JDG that he was relieved by the news, but that he would not speak publicly on the matter at this time.

Shadai Buys Group 1 Winner Grand Glory For Broodmare Duty

Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm has purchased Group 1 winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) for broodmare duty after her run in Sunday's G1 Japan Cup, Jour de Galop reported. Fifth in the Cup in 2021, she is currently jointly owned 50/50 by Yoshida and Xavier Marie's Haras de Hus. Anne-Sophie Yoh, who manages the interests of Haras de Hus, confirmed the news to JDG.

Bred by Elevage Haras de Bourgeauville and sold for €18,000 to Marco Bozzi Bloodstock during Arqana's October Yearling Sale in 2017, the bay made a winning debut in the colours of Bartolo Faraci at Deauville in December of her juvenile season in 2018. Purchased privately by Albert Frassetto, John D'Amato and Mike Pietrangelo over the winter, Grand Glory would go on to take third in the 2019 G1 Prix de Diane. Returning as a 4-year-old, the mare landed the G3 Prix de Flore in heavy ground after placing in a pair of Group 2s earlier that season. At five, she tallied the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy and G1 Prix Jean Romanet in succession, before missing by a nose in the G1 Prix de l'Opera that October.

She went through the Deauville ring again during Arqana's Vente d'Elevage last December, and brought €2.5 million from Yohea acting for Marie. Now a 6-year-old, the bay won the Listed Prix Zarkava this April and the G3 Prix Allez France a month later in the silks of Haras de Hus. Third in Royal Ascot's G1 Prince Of Wales's S., Grand Glory was unplaced in both the G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Her record stands at 23-8-4-4, $1,257,387.

Out of the placed Madonna Lily (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), Grand Glory is her fifth of six foals, and one of two stakes winners. Her final and last foal is the 2017 Toronado (Ire) gelding Bois d'Argent (GB), who won at listed level in France. Madonna Lily is a half-sister to GII Canadian S. heroine Minakshi (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), while she is also kin to G1 Crown Oaks victress Arapaho Miss (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and that mare's G1 Kennedy VRC Oaks-winning daughter Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}).

Two More Held in French Doping Case

Two more people have been detained in the French doping case which began Tuesday morning with coordinated stable raids throughout the country, according to the Jour de Galop. In Thursday's edition, the JDG reports that one of the two new individuals was connected to steeplechase trainer Luc Gabeur, and the other in the Ile de France region which encompasses Paris. Two other individuals have been released.

Tuesday morning, raids were carried out throughout the country, with 21 arrested in France, one additional person in Italy and one in Spain. In Thursday's JDG, Piallat confirmed that two veterinarians, Diego Uson of Spain, and Bertrand Franquet were among those detained. The paper said that according to their sources, raids were carried out Tuesday morning at the stables of David Cottin in Lamorlaye, just outside Chantilly, and in La Teste in Luc Gabeur's stables, which were very similar in nature. Workers were asked to wait in the break room, their mobile phones confiscated, while the searches were carried out, the JDG said.

Wednesday morning, the horses returned to training as usual.

“We are trying to establish the roles of one to another, their relationships and their level of responsibility,” Stephane Piallate, the head of the central service of racing and gaming, told the JDG. “Some people have been revealed to probably have a more important role than we thought at the start, serving as some sort of regional relays distributing these doping products. We are at the heart of an important process of identifying and verifying the elements of proof. Working in connection with the expertise of horse racing laboratories, we are waiting for the results of the analyses.”
