Nevin Taking Her Time With Happy Medium

Jay Em Ess Stable's Happy Medium (Runhappy) equaled his career-best 103 Beyer Speed Figure for 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy allowance victory (video) at Aqueduct Saturday. Happy Medium has gone 3-for-4 this year, his only loss coming in his debut where he finished third going seven furlongs at Aqueduct in March.

“He's doing all the right things,” trainer Michelle Nevin said of the sophomore. “We're very happy with him and we are taking each logical step as he's gone along and he's really shown up.”

Happy Medium earned his first 103 Beyer with a 9 1/4-length maiden special weight victory at Belmont in his second start. He followed with a five-length victory over a sloppy and sealed main track at Aqueduct Nov. 13.

Nevin said Happy Medium's effort Saturday was the best of his career.

“Yesterday, he looked more in control of the race every step of the way,” Nevin said. “When he broke his maiden, he did it easily, but it maybe didn't look as impressive as yesterday.”

Looking ahead for Happy Medium, Nevin said, “We'll just get past this, get back to training, and see how we are and then we'll make our decisions down the road a little bit. We're going to have to see how he comes out of this race. It was a huge effort, so I'm not in a rush to pick a spot. Once I feel like he's back on his feet again, we'll see what's available to us.”

Runhappy Gelding Runs up the Score Again; Garners Rising Stardom

Jay Em Ess Stable's Happy Medium (Runhappy) dominated for a third consecutive time Saturday to become the third 'TDN Rising Star' for the heating-up Runhappy. Third in his seven-panel unveiling here back in March, the $300,000 KEESEP yearling and May 20 foal resurfaced at Belmont Sept. 30 to air by 9 1/4 lengths and earn a gaudy 103 Beyer Speed Figure. He was flattered when three runners who finished behind him that day returned to graduate, and further validated his big win with a five-length allowance score in the local slop Nov. 13.

Off at 3-5 this time taking on older and far more seasoned rivals, the bay was scrubbed on from the rail to rush up and take command. He was able to clear off and settle a bit through splits of :22.14 and :45.05, and was all by his lonesome as he swung for home with a sizeable advantage. Wudda U Think Now (Fast Anna)–a four-time winner coming off a career-best 94 Beyer–gave chase in the lane, but Happy Medium strolled home in a race of his own to report under the wire a wrapped-up seven-length winner in 1:15.88.

Happy Medium's score comes on the heels of an impressive victory by Runhappy's juvenile 'Rising Star' Smile Happy in the Nov. 27 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. and a close second in the GI Cigar Mile H. here Dec. 4 by Grade II winner and MGISP 'Rising Star' Following Sea.

The winner is half to Mendip (Harlan's Holiday), MGSW-UAE, $895,961; Paddle Board (Harlan's Holiday), GSP, $183,774; Dig Deep (Candy Ride (ARG)), SW, $125,600; and a yearling filly by Practical Joke. His 20-year-old dam, who is a daughter of MGISW Chaposa Springs (Baldski), was bred to Mastery for 2022. Breeder Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stable was recently represented as co-breeder of both the GII Demoiselle S. and GII Remsen S. winners here.

4th-Aqueduct, $84,000, Alw (NW2$X)/Opt. Clm ($62,500), 12-18, 3yo/up, 6 1/2f, 1:15.88, ft, 7 lengths.

American Pharoah Filly Leads Gains At Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings And Horses Of All Ages Sale

The third edition of Fasig-Tipton's California Fall Yearlings and Horses of All Ages sale marked a jubilant return to the California market Tuesday at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.

Held as a yearling sale in 2019 and 2020, the 2021 renewal included 21 mares and weanlings among the 272 head cataloged. Tuesday's bullish session resulted in across-the-board gains over the sale's first two editions, soundly confirming its placing in the California market.

A filly by 2021 Hall of Fame inductee American Pharoah topped the sale when sold for $350,000 to Beckerle & Grey from the consignment of Lovacres Ranch, agent (video).

Offered as Hip 196, the chestnut filly is out of EZ Indy (A.P. Indy), an unraced half-sister to champion filly Banshee Breeze and stakes winner Unbridled Wind. EZ Indy is also a half-sister to the dams of multiple Grade 2 winner American Anthem and stakes winner Whirl. Hip 196 was bred in California by Terry C. Lovingier.

Current number-two first-crop sire Practical Joke was well represented when a filly from his second crop sold for $300,000 early in the sale (video).

Brian Koriner, agent for Jay Em Ess Stable, purchased Hip 10 from the consignment of Barton Thoroughbreds, agent. The filly is out of Miss Lavinia (Speightstown), whose four winners to date include stakes placed Arch Cat (Arch), a 15-time winner of more than $450,000 to date. Miss Lavinia is a half-sister to Breeders' Cup champion and stakes winner producer More Than Real, and to the dam of Breeders' Cup champion Structor. Hip 10 was bred in California by Richard Barton Enterprises.

Last year's champion freshman sire Nyquist was responsible for the sale's top colt, purchased for $275,000 by Sausalito Partners (video).

Offered as Hip 83 by Woodbridge Farm, agent, the colt is a half-brother to three winners from as many to race, including There Goes Harvard (Will Take Charge), who was recently second in the Ellis Park Derby. Hip 83 is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Soul Crusader, a half-half sister to two full stakes winners and to the dams of Grade 1 winner Killer Graces; Grade 2 winner Chocolate Ride; and multiple stakes winner Mrs. Orb. The colt was bred in California by Bud Petrosian.

Rounding out the top four was Hip 171, a colt from the first crop of Breeders' Cup Champion City of Light, purchased for $260,000 by Slugo Racing/Steve Gasparelli. Consigned by Excel Bloodstock (Bruno DeBerdt), the colt is out of the winning Cherokee Run mare Chicalelee, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner O K to Dance and a full sister to stakes winner Running Bride. Hip 171 hails from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Devil His Due and was bred in California by PT Syndicate #1.

The top-priced yearling by a California-based sire came in the form of Hip 30, a colt by pensioned California stalwart Square Eddie. Boomer Bloodstock and Radley Equine purchase the colt for $200,000 from the consignment of Fairview. The colt is out of stakes winner North Freeway (Jump Start). That mare has produced four winners to date, including Grade 1 placed multiple stakes winner Take the One O One (Acclamation) and stakes winner Square Deal, a full brother to Hip 30. The bay colt was bred in California by Thomas W. Bachman.

Of the breeding stock offered, a weanling colt from the first crop of champion Mitole (Hip 267) sold best, bringing $80,000 Blair and Rachel Bloodstock. Hip 267 was consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds (Adrian Gonzalez), agent, and bred in Kentucky by Lou Neve out of the winning Arch mare Raving About You.

The top-priced broodmare was Oh Pretty Woman (Hip 249), purchased for $50,000 by Donald Valpredo from the consignment of Harris Farms, agent. A six-year-old winning daughter of Scat Daddy, Oh Pretty Woman is in foal to Street Boss, carrying her first foal. The young mare is out of a full sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Liberian Freighter, from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Memories of Silver and Winter Memories.

In its third year, the California fall sale eclipsed the 2019 and 2020 editions in every category. Overall, 177 horses changed hands for a gross of $6,933,550, up 85.6 percent from $3,735,700 in 2020. The average rose 74.1 percent to $39,173 from $22,504, while the median doubled to $20,000. Seventeen horses sold for $100,000 or more, nearly six times the three sold for six figures in 2020. The RNA rate was 24.4 percent.

Extra Hope Turns Tables On Midcourt With Front-Running Native Diver Score

Last year in a four-horse field in the Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar, Jay Em Ess Stable's Extra Hope tracked C R K Stable's Midcourt from second place all the way around the track in the nine-furlong race. Midcourt drew clear late and won it by nearly six lengths.

This year – in another four-horse field at the Del Mar, Calif., track – the roles flipped.

Extra Hope and rider Juan Hernandez made the lead out of the gate and led Midcourt and Victor Espinoza from break to finish, scoring nicely in the Grade 3, $100,000 contest. His winning margin was only a length, but in the counting house and the record books a win is most certainly a win. Fractions were :23.86  :47.79  1:11.45  1:37.02  1:50.11

“That was the plan – to go for the lead right away,” said Hernandez. “He helped me a lot the way he broke so good out of there. Then he was running nice an easy for me; he was relaxed. At the quarter pole I asked him and he gave me a good reply.”

“That's (front running) what we planned with Extra Hope,” said Mandella. “I told (Juan Hernandez) 'Spin the tires' out of the gate a little bit. He (Extra Hope) kind of doesn't take life real serious, so he wasn't getting out of his training what he needed to before his first race off the layoff. But the one race did it. He's been doing good since then. We'll look at the Big 'Cap (next year) and possibly the San Antonio on opening day at Santa Anita.”

Extra Hope, a 4-year-old colt by Shanghai Bobby, earned a check for $60,000 for capturing his first stakes race and increased his bankroll to $294,831 with his fourth win in 14 starts. The victory was extra sweet for the lady behind Jay Em Ess Stable –Samantha Siegel. She also bred Extra Hope.

Finishing third in the lineup was Hronis Racing's Combatant and filling out the field was Fox Hill Farms and Siena Farm's Royal Ship, who stumbled badly out of the gate and nearly unseated rider Mike Smith.

Extra Hope ran the mile and one-eighth in 1:50.11 and paid $10.40 and $2.80. Midcourt, the 2/5 favorite, returned $2.10. There was no show wagering in the short lineup.

Leading rider Abel Cedillo had a pair of victories on the afternoon and now has 16 winners in the first 10 days of racing. Best performance by a rider on the afternoon though went to Flavien Prat, who registered three firsts. He now sits in second place in the jockey standings with 10 wins.

Racing resumes tomorrow at Del Mar with a nine-race card beginning at 12:30 p.m.
