In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Nakayama Racecourses. While the 3-year-old filly set was front and center for last weekend's G1 Oka Sho, their male counterparts get their chance in Sunday's G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), and though there are no American-bred runners in the field of 18, several of the colts were produced by mares sourced at the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Mixed Sales. Saturday, April 16, 2022 11th-HSN, Arlington Cup-G3, ¥76,000,000 ($604k), 3yo, 1mT JASPER KRONE (c, 3, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25K Keeneland September yearling turned $90K OBS March breezer, has already punched well above his weight, with two victories and two minor placings from five starts, including a cozy success in what amounts to a first-level allowance going six furlongs at Nakayama Mar. 26 (see below, SC 2). The chestnut, who hails from the female family of Jump Start and Mastery, is joined in the field by Dugat (Practical Joke) ($190K 2yo '21 OBSMAR), whose commonly owned stable companion Jean Gros (More Than Ready) wired the field in the G2 New Zealand Trophy Apr. 9. Saturday, October 16, 2021 5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m TOSEN EL DORADO (c, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}–Almudena {Per}, by Silver Planet {Arg}) is out of a winner of the G1 Polla de Potrancas (Peruvian 1000 Guineas) who produced US-bred Peruvian champion grass horse More Than Words (More Than Ready) and champion 3-year-old filly and fellow Potrancas victress Cascanueces (Smart Strike). Almudena, the broodmare of the year in Peru for 2017, was acquired privately by this breeder in 2018 and foaled this colt in April 2019 before being exported to Japan. B-Mr Takaya Shimakawa (KY)
Sunday, October 17, 2021 4th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1300m MOODY NILE (f, 2, American Pharoah–Henny Jenney, by Henny Hughes) realized $200K as a Keeneland September yearling last fall, but breezed a quarter-mile in the bullet time of :20 4/5 at OBS March over the winter and was knocked down for $600K, the priciest of her Triple Crown-winning sire's 20 juveniles to sell (22 ring) this year and second most-expensive purchase out of the sale. The Apr. 1 foal is the second from her MSW/GSP dam, a half-sister to MSW & GISP Zeewat (Harlan's Holiday) and SP I'm Wanted (Posse), who is also responsible for Moody Nile's year-older full-brother Primary Colors, a debut third at Belmont this past June. 5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400mT CANDY DRIVE (c, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}–Supreme, by Empire Maker), a half-brother to GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. hero and future Claiborne stallion Silver State (Hard Spun), was led out unsold on a bid of $95,000 at KEESEP last fall, but improved dramatically and realized a final bid of $500K at OBSMAR after working an eighth of a mile in a smooth :10 flat. Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings went to $800K for the SW & GSP Supreme in foal to Giant's Causeway at KEEJAN in 2013. Sept. 5. The $190K OBS March breezer from the family of MGSW juvenile Salty Perfume (Salt Lake) tries the dirt for the first time with legend Yutaka Take at the controls and should be winning. Saturday, August 21, 2021 1st-SAP, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) never really got a hold of the Hakodate main track on debut July 24, but he traveled much better when switched to the grass Aug. 7, finishing a close fifth with a bit of trouble (see below, gate 10). The $750K Keeneland September yearling is not only a half-brother to main-track GISW Weep No More (Mineshaft), but also to Current (Curlin), whose best victory came in the GIII Dixiana Bourbon S. over the Keeneland turf course in 2018. Poison Arrow's second dam, 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks winner Flute (Seattle Slew), was responsible for Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade II winner and four times Grade I-placed on the grass. 5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT JASPER KRONE (c, 2, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy) is the first produce for his dam, stakes-placed going long on the grass during her sophomore season for trainer Fernando Abreu before being retired to stud in 2018. Descending from the extended female family of the good juvenile Jump Start and from the same A.P. Indy sire line, Jasper Krone was a $25K KEESEP yearling and was hammered down to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $90K after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 at this year's OBS March Sale.
