UOFL Equine Industry Series in Person in ’21

The University of Louisville Equine Industry Program (EIP), in conjunction with Horse Racing Nation, released its free Fall 2021 speaker series, which will be held in person this year on the UofL campus. The series includes panel discussions on the “Super Card” trend in racing and growing racing through diversity and inclusion.

The final event in the series will be an interview with Houston business owner, philanthropist and horse owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale. The events will be held from 5:30-6:45p.m., and will be broadcast live on the Horse Racing Nation Facebook page.

This year's series features:

Sept. 14  – “Examining Horse Racing's 'Super Card' Trend,” Horn Auditorium – UofL College of Business

  • Eric Halstrom – vice president and general manager of racing, Indiana Grand Racetrack & Casino
  • Ben Huffman – vice president, racing and racing secretary, Churchill Downs and Keeneland
  • Jon Moss – executive director, Iowa HBPA Inc.

Panel moderated by Jude Feld, racing analyst and contributor, Horse Racing Radio Network.

Oct. 12  – “How Racing Can Grow Through Diversity and Inclusion,” UofL Student Activities Center

  • Jason Wilson – chief operating officer, 1/ST Content
  • Greg Harbut – founder and president, Harbut Bloodstock
  • Ron Mack – executive director, Legacy Equine Academy

Nov. 9  – “An Evening with “MATTRESS MACK,” aka Jim McIngvale,” UofL Student Activities Center

The series concludes with an entertaining evening with Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, known in racing circles for his strong opinions on the sport, horses running medication free and supporting the ecosystem of horse racing by placing wagers at the racetrack instead of advance-deposit wagering accounts.

Sal Sinatra Named President Of Equibase

Sal Sinatra has been named president of Equibase Company LLC by the Equibase Management Committee, effective June 21, 2021. He succeeds Jason G. Wilson, who left Equibase in April to join The Stronach Group.

“Sal is a longtime participant in the Thoroughbred industry, and the Equibase Management Committee knows he will be a valuable asset to the Equibase team,” said Ian D. Highet, chairman of Equibase. “His analytical background, management experience, and firsthand knowledge of every aspect of racing will guide Equibase in developing a strategic path forward for its products and services.”

Sinatra double majored in Mathematics and Statistics from Rutgers University, during which time he was an assistant clerk at the Daily Racing Form. In 1985 he became a racing official at Monmouth Park and Meadowlands in New Jersey and was also an assistant racing secretary at Beulah Park in Columbus, Ohio.

From 1990 until 1999, he was president and ownership partner of TSNS, which was acquired by The Jockey Club as part of InCompass Solutions. He then spent 15 years as vice president of Racing and racing secretary at Parx Racetrack and Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, before becoming president and general manager of Maryland Jockey Club in 2014.

“I have spent my entire career in Thoroughbred racing and have worked with Equibase since its inception. I have tried to be an innovative leader and that will be reflected in my leadership of Equibase,” Sinatra said. “My experience as a technician and working at racetracks puts me in a unique position to maximize what Equibase has to offer the industry.”

Jim Gagliano To Serve As Interim President Of Equibase

“The Equibase Management Committee met yesterday and approved The Jockey Club President Jim Gagliano to serve as interim president of Equibase Company upon the departure of Jason Wilson on April 2,” said Ian Highet, chairman of Equibase. “Equibase has formed a search committee to find a successor, which will include considerations of persons both in and outside of the industry. Jim Gagliano's term will last until that person is hired.”

Wilson joined The Jockey Club in 2011 as vice president of business development and later was made president of TJC Media Ventures. He was named president and chief operating officer of Equibase Company in March 2016. Wilson is leaving Equibase to join The Stronach Group, where he will serve as chief operating officer of 1/ST Content.

Jason Wilson Appointed COO of 1/ST CONTENT

1/ST CONTENT, the operating group for all of 1/ST's media and content companies, announced the appointment of Jason Wilson as Chief Operating Officer. Wilson will work directly with Aidan Butler, President, 1/ST CONTENT, to further develop and align the company's North American and international content businesses. He will focus on innovating Thoroughbred racing content programs and building competitive customer platforms.

“I am thrilled to have Jason, a well-known and knowledgeable industry executive who shares our vision for the future of our sport, as part of the 1/ST team,” said Butler. “Jason's appointment as Chief Operating Officer is an important next step for 1/ST CONTENT as we continue to harness new technologies and modernize the way racing content is produced and distributed.”

Wilson added, “I look forward to working with Belinda Stronach, Craig Fravel, Aidan and the entire 1/ST team to establish the 1/ST CONTENT division as the future of content platforms for Thoroughbred racing. My own vision for the future of modern racing directly aligns with the 1/ST vision to re-imagine racing as a competitive sports product for a new generation of customers and fans alike.”

Wilson previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer for Equibase Company, the Thoroughbred industry's official database of racing information and statistics and as the Vice President of Business Development for The Jockey Club and president of TJC Media Ventures.

Prior to joining The Jockey Club, he spent three years as the assistant general counsel for SoftNet Systems, Inc./Aerzone Corporation in San Francisco and later served as an associate in the Healthcare Investment Banking group of Deutsche Bank Securities and as Vice President in the real estate, gaming and lodging group of Banc of America Securities.
