The Meadowlands To Begin 2022 With Pair Of 15-Race Programs

The year 2021 may have been challenging for society, but business at The Meadowlands was extraordinary while providing horseplayers a diversion from the pandemic.

This Friday (Jan. 7), The Big M will kick off what it hopes to be another big year with the first of two 15-race programs that get underway at 6:20 p.m. Racing will be conducted on a Friday-Saturday basis for the next 31 weeks. In addition, there will be racing on three Thursdays during that span (June 30, July 7 and Aug. 4).

“Winter is normally a good time for us with some of the closer tracks dark for the next few months,” said track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “Our entry box got great support from horsemen wanting to get their horses raced, so much so that we are able to present 30 races this first weekend of 2022.”

The action should be sizable to start the year, if the final program of 2021 is any indication. Last Friday (Dec. 31), wagering on the 14-race card totaled $2.97 million, which nudged action for the year just past the $276-million mark for the 92 racing programs, meaning that the mile oval's average handle per card was a remarkable $3 million.

“We all know how tough 2021 was on all of us,” said Settlemoir. “But we were grateful to be able to conduct our races and be as successful as we were while keeping our horsemen, staff, and customers safe. Moving forward, with Covid numbers on the rise, we will be taking some precautions to keep our co-workers and guests safe and healthy for the New Year.”

Until further notice, face masks must be worn by staff and guests, regardless of vaccination status, in the grandstand as well as the FanDuel Sportsbook.

The organization that accumulates the highest mythical bankroll is the winner.

The inaugural Charity Handicapping Contest winner in 2019 was the Act Now Foundation which raises awareness and educates communities about Alzheimer's disease.

“This charity contest allows us the opportunity to help our local community,” said Jason Settlemoir, COO and GM of Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment. “We saw the positive impact our first charity contest had in 2019 and we knew we wanted to support our community again this year.”

Participating organizations will also have the opportunity to make winner's circle presentations and be featured on the track's jumbotron.

Meadowlands Teams With Warrior Ranch Foundation; Five Veterans To Enjoy Once-In-A-Lifetime Racing Experience

The Meadowlands Racetrack has teamed up with Warrior Ranch Foundation for a driving program designed for military veterans and first responders.

Army Ranger Paul Martinez (ret.) and world-class harness trainer Robbie Siegelman will be managing the six week driving program at Warrior Ranch this summer.

Staff Sergeant Martinez is the author of “When the Killer Man Comes,” and has been supporting equine activities since he retired in 2014.

Robbie Siegelman has been a Standardbred trainer since 1982 and owned and operated Siegelman Stables for nearly 40 years.

This once in a lifetime experience will give five veterans a chance to learn how to care for horses, how to apply the racing tack and harness and also learn how to drive them on the track.

“As soon as Robbie Siegelman reached out I wanted to sponsor this program,” said Meadowlands Racetrack COO & GM Jason Settlemoir. “It is important to support our veterans and thank them for all they have done for us.”

At the conclusion of the program the participants will have a “Night at the Races” at the Meadowlands Racetrack and have the chance to lead some post parades during the evening.

“We have received generous support from the Meadowlands to begin the program for our first group of veterans,” said Eileen Shanahan, President and Founder of Warrior Ranch Foundation. “We are seeking further support to fund the horses and their care.”

Meadowlands Shifting Post Time To 6:20 P.M., Effective March 19

Management at Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment announced Wednesday morning that post time will move to 6:20 p.m., effective Friday, March 19.

“This is in response to our fans who want to bet our entire card but appreciate getting home a little bit earlier,” said Big M Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir of the track shifting post time 20 minutes later than what has been the norm since Dec. 26. “We have seen solid wagering on our early races that have been taking place in the before-7 p.m. window. Those races have, in effect, replaced the races in the after-11 p.m. window, where wagering had not been as strong when we had our post time at 7:15 p.m.”

Racing will be conducted on the usual Friday and Saturday basis all the way through Hambletonian Day, Saturday, Aug. 7.

Post time for this weekend's races (March 12-13) will be 6 p.m.
