Cafe Pharoah Looking To Stay Perfect in Japan Dirt Derby

Having already sewn up the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby and a berth in the starting gate at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday of September if connections so choose, Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) will stretch out to 2000 meters for the first time in his career as he tries to make it four wins from as many starts in Wednesday’s $711,743 Japan Dirt Derby at Ohi Racecourse.

The $475,000 OBS March graduate won his debut going nine furlongs in December, then cut back to Toyko’s one-turn mile for the Listed Hyacinth S. Feb. 23, where he overcame a very slow start to pick up 30 Kentucky Derby points. The son of the very talented turf mare Mary’s Follies (More Than Ready) took the next four months off, returning to add 40 additional points and clinch the Derby spot with an easy five-length tally in stakes-record time in the June 21 G3 Unicorn S., the first of two Japanese races added to the Road to the Derby in light of the coronavirus-related postponement. Damian Lane returns in the saddle.

Barnard Loop (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was beaten 10 lengths into second by Cafe Pharoah on their respective debuts, but the dark bay has not lost since, with a pair of victories at Nakayama ahead of a neck defeat of Danon Pharaoh (Jpn) (American Pharoah) in the Listed Hyogo Championship at Sonoda May 6. Leading jockey Christophe Lemaire has the call.

A son of GI Santa Anita Oaks victrix Crisp (El Corredor), Danon Pharaoh fetched the equivalent of $1.63 million at the JRHA Select Yearling Sale two summers ago and has two wins from his seven trips to the post.

Daimei Corrida (Jpn) (Eskendereya) could manage only a ninth-place effort to Cafe Pharoah in the Hyacinth, but has improved with a stretch-out in trip and exits a close second in the Listed Hosu S. over Wednesday’s trip at Hanshin June 21.

Full Flat (Speightstown), a $250,000 Keeneland September acquisition, defeated Sunday’s G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) in the $800,000 Saudi Derby Cup in February, but was no match for the favorite when sixth in the Unicorn S. last time out.

Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: July 5, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are a couple of horses of interest for this weekend running at Fukushima and Hakodate Racecourses:

ALPHA ZIP (f, 3, City Zip–Alpha Centauri, by Dynaformer) failed to land a blow in four tries from seven furlongs to a mile to begin her career, but woke up to just lose a head bob over this course and distance when last seen June 21. The filly’s dam, a one-time $600K Keeneland November weanling, is responsible for the SP Reversethedecision (Scat Daddy), while the deeper female family includes G1SW Etoile Montante (Miswaki), dam of MGSW Starformer (Dynaformer), and French MSW/GSP Viviana (Nureyev), whose daughters Tates Creek (Rahy) and Sightseek (Distant View) combined to carry the Juddmonte silks to nine Grade I wins in this country. A half-sister to MSP Tweeting (Uncle Mo), the dark bay is out of a daughter of G1SW Macoumba (Mr. Prospector), making her a full-sister to leading sire Malibu Moon and a half to MGSP Positively (Distorted Humor) and SP Mutually Benefit (Dynaformer), the dam of MSW & MGSP Compelled (War Front). Acquired in utero for $60K at KEENOV in 2015, Paris Tesoro was a $25K KEENOV acquisition and was resold for €80K at the 2017 Arqana August Yearling Sale. Champion Racemare Enable On Target To Begin 2020 Campaign In Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse

Star mare Enable is on course to begin her 2020 campaign with a defense her Coral-Eclipse crown this Sunday at Sandown, but it will be no easy task with an eye catching field unveiled at the entry stage on Monday.

The 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel will be partnered by regular rider Frankie Dettori for trainer John Gosden, and faces a likely field of seven other talented contenders.

Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup winner Ghaiyyath, who beat both 2019 Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and Stradivarius at Newmarket. looks the principle challenger on paper.

However, the supporting cast is littered with talent, including Enable's stablemate Lord North. John Gosden's colt has risen through the handicap ranks all the way to winning the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes a fortnight ago at Royal Ascot in impressive fashion.

Japan, who disappointed that day, but has a Juddmonte International win to his name, is also slated to take his chance. And the field is given an International flavor as Group 1-winning Japanese-superstar mare Deirdre in the line-up.

Magic Wand, Regal Reality and Bangkok make up the entry list.
