Noble Mission, Full-Brother To Frankel, Sold To Stand In Japan

Noble Mission, a full-brother to the great Frankel and sire of Grade 1 winner Code of Honor, has been sold to stand in Japan, per a statement from the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association.

The release states that the 11-year-old son of Galileo will ship to Japan in late November, and he will take up residence at Shizunai Stallion Station in December, following import quarantine.

Noble Mission stood his first six seasons at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., where he was advertised in 2020 for a fee of $20,000. He is best known as the sire of Code of Honor, the winner of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup, and runner-up in the 2019 Kentucky Derby hailing from his sire's first crop.

Other notable runners among Noble Mission's 73 winners include Spanish Mission, a Group 2 winner in England, and stakes winners Life Mission and Laafy.

A British homebred for the Juddmonte Farms operation, Noble Mission is out of the Group 3-placed stakes-winning Danehill mare Kind, making him a full-brother to the undefeated European champion Frankel, and a half to Group 3 winner Bullet Train and stakes winner Joyeuse.

Noble Mission won nine of 21 starts for earnings of $2,202,887, including the Group 3 Gordon Stakes as a 3-year-old, and the Tapster Stakes at four. He took his game to another level at five, earning Europe's Cartier champion older horse honors in 2014 on a campaign that included victories in the G1 Champion Stakes in England, the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, and the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland. He also finished second in the German G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen to add even more international flavor.

The Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association is a regular buyer of U.S. stallions and stallion prospects, with a roster of expats that currently includes Animal Kingdom, Declaration of War, Creator, Eskendereya, Cape Blanco, Aldebaran, David Junior, Came Home, and Squirtle Squirt.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Hirsch S. on synthetic and a stakes winner and Grade II placed on conventional dirt. A $975K buyback in foal to this sire at Fasig-Tipton November in 2014, Lady of Fifty was acquired by Teruya Yoshida in 2017 and produced this filly in Kentucky before being sent overseas. The mare was not represented by a foal in 2019 and her weanling colt by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) was purchased for ¥36m ($335,538) at this year’s JRHA Select Sale. B-Teruya Yoshida (KY)

The impeccably bred bay, a full-brother to SW & MG1SP Fleet Review, is out of a winning full-sister to champion and treble Group 1 winner Rip Van Winkle (Ire) and a half to Italian Group 3 winner Le Vie Infinite (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). LECCE BAROQUE (f, 3, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) looks to give pinhooker Carlo Vaccarezza and Top Line Sales a second Japanese winner in as many weekends, following on the success of Sui (Candy Ride {Arg}) Oct. 3. A $410K Keeneland September yearling turned $525K OBS March breezer, the dark bay could not have been more impressive in graduating by 10 lengths at first asking over this track and distance Feb. 8 and added an equally sparkling nine-length allowance Apr. 25 (see below, gate 10). She was burned up on the pace when the 2-1 second favorite to Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) in the June 21 G3 Unicorn S. (1600m) and makes a much-anticipate return here. O’Brien Family Runners Withdrawn From Sunday’s Arc Card Due To Zilpaterol Positives, Possible Feed Contamination

A total of 11 horses trained by Aidan, Joseph, and Donnacha O'Brien will be withdrawn from Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe card at Longchamp after a French lab returned positive urine samples for the banned substance Zilpaterol, Racing Post reports.

Four of the O'Brien runners – Mogul, Japan, Sovereign and Serpentine – were set to test Enable in the Group 1 Arc. Fancy Blue, a leading contender for the G1 Prix de l'Opera trained by Donnacha O'Brien, will also scratched.

The withdrawals were announced after Gain Equine Nutrition advised customers to stop using its feed after some batches were found to have been contaminated with Zilpaterol, a substance that's unlicensed in Europe, but is used in the U.S. and elsewhere, primarily to promote weight gain in cattle.

Urine samples from the O'Brien horses were cleared by the Irish Equine Centre, but Aidan O'Brien told Racing Post that a difference in testing methods between the Irish and French laboratories might have produced different results. O'Brien said the Irish test is primarily used to find the drug in cattle, instead of horses.

The Zilpaterol contamination had already caused five positives in France over the past few weeks, and trainer Roger Varian, who also uses Gain products, scratched all seven of his British runners on Saturday, as well.

In 2013, feed made in a California mill and contaminated with Zilpaterol caused a rash of positives in that state, and reached as far as Hong Kong when the feed shipped overseas.

Gain is one of the most widely-used feeds in England and Ireland, meaning a large portion of their racing populations could be exposed to the contaminated feed. However, Racing Post reports that John Gosden, trainer of top Arc contender Enable, does not feed Gain products, thus the mare is not at a risk to scratch due to the contamination.

A statement from the Ballydoyle Twitter account on Saturday read:

“Unfortunately, the results of the urine samples taken from the horses yesterday have come back positive from the French laboratory. There is a possibility that the contaminant may have left their system by the time of racing tomorrow, however we have no guarantee of this, and in order to protect the integrity of racing, we have decided to withdraw all our horses from racing tomorrow. Joseph and Donnacha O'Brien will do likewise.”

The dark bay, produced by of a stakes-placed half-sister to MSW & MGSP Afleet Deceit (Northern Afleet), was bought back for $180K out of the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, was RNAd for $127K at FTKOCT a handful of weeks later and was acquired by owner Kenji Ryotokuji for $375K at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale. Her Distorted Humor half-brother fetched $100K Thursday at Keeneland September. B-Blackstone Farm LLC (PA)

Indy) may have struggled with a rain-affected turf when a midfield seventh on Tokyo debut going a mile June 28, but the $675,000 KEESEP graduate improved to be second to the record-setting Wonderful Town (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) on a sounder surface over nine furlongs at Niigata July 25. Grade I winner Love and Pride, who was acquired by Three Chimneys for $4.9 million in foal to Distorted Humor at FTKNOV in 2013, is the dam of the SW Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile) and a now-yearling Gun Runner filly that made $750K to top the weanling offerings at FTKNOV last fall. LADY MERCY (f, 2, American Pharoah–Two Oceans, by Cape Town) is the second foal to the races for her dam, a daughter of MSW & GSP Ocean Cat, and carries the latter’s sire Storm Cat 4×3 the same as American Pharoah’s recent G2 Park Hill S. winner Pista and SW & GSP Ocean Atlantique. This sire’s dual U.S. graded winner Sweet Melania has Storm Cat 4×4. The homebred descends from the female family of Japanese Horses of the Year Narita Brian (Jpn) (Brian’s Time) and Biwa Hayahide (Jpn) (Sharrood) and successful young stallion Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
