Notable US-Bred & -Sired Runners in Japan: July 10 & 11, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Fukushima and Kokura Racecourses:

Saturday, July 10, 2021
3rd-KOK, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1000m
LA LA GABRIEL (c, 3, Into Mischief–Celebrate Now, by Street Cry {Ire}) cost $550K at Keeneland September in 2019 and is out of a daughter of Canadian Horse of the Year Dance Smartly (Danzig)'s full-sister Dance Swiftly, also the dam of 'TDN Rising Star' and GSW sire Speightster (Speightstown) and fellow 'Rising Star' SW/GSP West Coast Swing (Gone West). Dance Swiftly is also responsible for SW Paiota Falls (Kris S.), herself the dam of French SW & MGSP African Ride (GB) (Candy Ride {Arg}) and SW & GSP Rafting (Tapit). The female family also includes Queen's Plate winners Dancethruthedawn (Mr. Prospector, Ch. 3yo Filly-Can) and Scatter the Gold (Mr. Prospector), champion Hello Seattle (Deputy Minister) and the outstanding sire and broodmare sire Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector). B-Burleson Farm, Sequel Thoroughbreds & McKenzie Bloodstock (KY)

4th-FKS, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1700m
KARNAK (JPN) (c, 3, American Pharoah–Kitten's Dumplings, by Kitten's Joy) is the first Japanese-foaled produce from his dam, winner of the 2013 GI QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland and acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2016. The mare's overall first foal is Karnak's full-brother Abul Haul, one of 14 winners from 18 to race in Japan for their history-making sire. Well-beaten on debut in February, Karnak stripped significantly trimmer for his second career appearance going a mile at Tokyo June 27 and finished a much-improved fifth. Kitten's Dumplings is a full-sister to GSW Granny's Kitten and SW & GSP Granny Mc's Kitten. B-Shadai Farm

Sunday, July 11, 2021
1st-KOK, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1000m
KOLN CONCERT (c, 2, Mohaymen–Gold Glimmer, by Smart Strike) makes his third trip to the races in the space of a month, having finished seventh and sixth, respectively, in seven-furlong turf tests last month. The $100K Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase grad switches to the main track for this and has a license to improve for it, as he is out of a half-sister to a pair of black-type winners, including one on the dirt. The April foal's MGSW third dam Recognizable (Seattle Slew) was a half-sister to Ogden Phipps's Awe Inspiring (Slew O'Gold), winner of the 1989 GI Flamingo S. and GI American Derby and third to Sunday Silence and stablemate Easy Goer in that year's GI Kentucky Derby. Mishriff Tops Expected Field Of Seven For Saturday’s Coral-Eclipse Stakes

Seven horses will go forward for the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park on Saturday, July 3. The 10-furlong Group 1 showpiece takes place over 10 furlongs, forms part of the British Champions Series, and is the first major contest where those from the Classic generation take on their older counterparts.

Heading the market at 13-8 with sponsor Coral is Mishriff for John and Thady Gosden. The 4-year-old has already bagged two very valuable prices overseas this year with victories in the word's most valuable race, the Saudi Cup, and the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic.

Aidan O'Brien has trained five Coral-Eclipse winners and needs one more victory to equal the record of Alec Taylor Jr and Sir Michael Stoute. O'Brien has three horses going forward headed by St Mark's Basilica. The 3-year-old Siyouni colt is a dual Classic winner in France this season, having scooped the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) and Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) so far in 2021. The Ballydoyle trio is completed by 2019 Juddmonte International hero Japan and Armory, who was a close third behind stable companion Love in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Also going forward are last year's Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes hero Addeybb, last seen when landing the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick, Australia in April, and Wonderful Tonight, who was the very impressive winner of the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on her seasonal reappearance. If successful, 7-year-old Addeybb would create history by becoming the oldest ever winner.

The confirmations are completed by El Drama, a disappointment behind St Mark's Basilica last time but previously a cozy winner of the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester.

David Stevens of Coral said: “In the absence of Lord North, who had been backed into 6-1 for Saturday's race, this year's Coral-Eclipse market is dominated by the last two winners of the Prix du Jockey Club, with the year-older Mishriff just shading favoritism at 13-8, ahead of this year's Chantilly winner, St Mark's Basilica, at 7-4.

“Of the rest, both Addeybb and Wonderful Tonight could both shorten in the betting should plenty of rain fall over Sandown this week.”

VALKYRJA (JPN) (f, 4, Tapit–Peace and War, by War Front) is perfect in just two previous appearances, a debut victory at Kyoto in February 2020 before returning from a 13-month absence to add a first-level Chukyo allowance over a very sloppy strip this past Mar. 13 (see below, gate 9). Peace and War, upset winner of the 2014 GI Darley Alcibiades S., was sold for $1.45 million with this filly in utero at Keeneland November in 2016. B-Northern Racing

GRAN APLAUSO (c, 2, Gun Runner–Fiducia {SW & GSP-Jpn, $1,425,976}, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) and his first on the turf with a smooth success on career debut. Gran Aplauso is the first foal from his dam, a listed winner and narrowly beaten in the G3 Ibis Summer Dash over five furlongs. Fiducia is a daughter of North Hills's Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), Japan's champion older mare of 2003 and winner of the country's two major six-furlong sprints–the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and the Sprinters' S.–before they were recognized as international Group 1 events. Believe's other produce include MSW & MGSP multi-millionaire Faridat (Kingmambo) and GSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy).
