Notable US-Bred & -Sired Runners in Japan: July 31, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Niigata Racecourse:

MOZU LOTUS LAND (c, 3, Tapit–Sacred Feather, by Carson City), a $425K Keeneland September acquisition by the owner of MG1SW and now Japanese sire Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}), was a debut sixth to the promising Careerism (Upstart) May 8 ahead of an improved fourth-place effort two weeks later. A half-brother to French GSW & G1SP Taareef (Kitten's Joy), the chestnut is out of a daughter of GSW Marianna's Girl (Dewan), also the dam of MSW/MGSP Crimson Classic (Sky Classic); GSWs Marastani (Shahrastani) and Christine's Outlaw (Wild Again); and SW & GSP Amansara (War Chant), the dam of SW Siem Riep (Tapit). 5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT
PIONIER (JPN) (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Skylander Girl, by Stroll) is the first produce for her Grade III-winning dam, who fetched $260K from Polo Green Stable on behalf of Shimokobe Farm when offered as a broodmare prospect at KEENOV in 2017.  The filly's second dam, Heliotrope (Northern Score), was a Sovereign Award-winning grass mare in Canada. Skylander Girl's foal of 2021, a colt by Satono Aladdin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), was knocked down for ¥41 million ($369,370) at the JRHA Select Sale earlier this month. B-Shimokobe Farm

Immaculately Bred Tapit Colt Off the Mark in Japan

1st-Hakodate, ¥9,680,000 ($87,717), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT, 1:50.3, gd/fm.
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria {MGISW, $3,014,000}, by Tale of the Cat), an $825,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale, made the majority of the pace in his June 13 debut going this distance at Tokyo before retreating in the final 200 meters to finish fourth. Better than a 10-1 chance for this second go, the beautifully bred bay was away only fairly from gate 11 and raced with just two rivals behind as they hit the first turn. Unhappy with his mount's positioning behind a slow pace, jockey Takeshi Yokoyama boldly hit the gas with about 5 1/2 furlongs to travel, allowing Fifty Chevy to stride into the lead at the 800-meter pole. Nursed along on the turn, Fifty Chevy responded gamely when set down in upper stretch and began looking for the line in the final 50 meters, but got there with a half-length to spare. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April and added a July 5 allowance, both on turf. Stopchargingmaria is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Fifty Chevy and a filly foal by Quality Road. The winning owner also campaigns Vanishing Point (Tapit), the full-brother to multiple champion Unique Bella, who cost $1.5 million at KEESEP in 2019. Sales history: $825,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Japan’s Laboratory Of Racing Chemistry Appointed IFHA Reference Laboratory

The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), following the approval of the IFHA's Executive Council, announced Wednesday that the Laboratory of Racing Chemistry, Japan (LRC) has been provisionally appointed as an IFHA Reference Laboratory. This approval is the result of its application and a remote assessment conducted under the supervision of the Reference Laboratory Appointment Committee (RLAC). Due to travel restrictions arising from the global COVID-19 pandemic, the remote assessment was conducted in place of an on-site assessment, following which the LRC has been provisionally appointed at this stage.

“I want to congratulate the Laboratory of Racing Chemistry for being provisionally appointed as an IFHA Reference Laboratory,” said IFHA Chairman Louis Romanet. “This is the culmination of a significant amount of collaboration and hard work by the LRC, the RLAC, and the Japan Racing Association (JRA). The assessor appointed by the RLAC was very favorably impressed with the scientific expertise of the LRC staff and observed that the methods under assessment were carried out efficiently, and samples were analyzed with a notable attention to detail.”

The LRC, established in 1965, is an internationally accredited horse racing doping control laboratory primarily used to provide professional analytical testing services for the analysis of equine biological samples including urine, blood and hair from horse racing and international equestrian events. LRC is the only equine drug testing laboratory in Japan, and its main role is to uphold the integrity of horse racing in Japan to ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders.

Under its provisional appointment, LRC joins Racing Analytical Services Limited (Australia); Laboratoire Des Courses Hippiques (France); LGC Group, Sport & Specialised Analytical Services (Great Britain); the Hong Kong Jockey Club Racing Laboratory (Hong Kong); and the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, University of California at Davis (USA) as IFHA Reference Laboratories. As part of the application process, IFHA Reference Laboratories successfully satisfy criteria that include but are not limited to the scale of operations, resourcing, research activity and capability to detect the use of prohibited substances, including the major doping agents (MDAs).
