Champion British Idiom Dies In Japan At Age Four

British Idiom, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2019, died on Oct. 1, 2021 in Japan, per Japanese Studbook Database records.

A cause of death was not listed for the 4-year-old daughter of Flashback, who was pregnant for the first time to Japanese champion Duramente. The stallion died in September after a battle with colitis. A cause of death was not listed for British Idiom.

British Idiom was sold privately to the Yoshida family's Northern Farm in June 2020, and she arrived in Japan in September of that year.

Trained by Brad Cox for the partnership of Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, and the Elkstone Group, British Idiom went undefeated during her championship 2-year-old campaign, taking her debut at Saratoga by 3 1/2 lengths, then shipping to Keeneland to trounce the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes by 6 1/2 lengths. She entered the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park as the betting public's second choice, and she wore down favorite Donna Veloce to prevail by a neck and secure the Eclipse Award.

After a three-month break, British Idiom started her 3-year-old season with a runner-up effort in the G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds. Her final start came in the G3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park, where she finished 10th and exited the race with a chip in her right-front ankle.

The filly retired with three wins in five starts for earnings of $1,442,139.

British Idiom was bred in Kentucky by Hargus and Sandra Sexton and Silver Fern Farm, out of the stakes-winning Mr. Sekiguchi mare Rose and Shine. She sold as a yearling for $40,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale.

SEA VIXEN (f, 3, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai), a $130K Keeneland September yearling turned $500K OBS March breezer, was placed twice from three starts on the grass to begin her career, but looked a new proposition altogether when racing to a seven-length victory on dirt debut at Tokyo Nov. 28. The bay returns to the main track for this, having finished down the field in a 1400-meter turf allowance at Hanshin on Christmas Day. Sky Vixen is out of a half-sister to SP Pull Dancer (Pulpit), the dam of the versatile Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday). This is the extended family of Bernstein, Wiseman's Ferry, et al. Breeders’ Cup Winner Structor Sold To Stand In Japan

Structor, the winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, has been sold to begin his stallion career in Japan.

The deal was brokered by Ramiro Restrepo's Marquee Bloodstock, and it was announced via the company's social media channels on Jan. 17.

Marquee Bloodstock pinhooked the son of Palace Malice in partnership with Pick View, purchasing him as a yearling for $160,000 and selling him for $850,000 at the 2019 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training.

Structor went unbeaten during his 2-year-old season, winning on debut in a Saratoga turf maiden special weight, then taking the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park. He then shipped to Santa Anita Park for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, where he got up late to win by three-quarters of a length. The campaign saw him be named an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old male.

After a layoff of more than a year, Structor returned for one more start in February 2021, where he finished fourth in a Gulfstream Park optional claiming race.

Structor retired with three wins in four starts for earnings of $710,880, racing for owners Jeff Drown and Don Rachel, and trained by Chad Brown.

Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys, Structor is out of the winning More Than Ready mare Miss Always Ready, who is also the dam of Grade 2-placed Always Carina. Miss Always Ready is a full-sister to 2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner More Than Real.
