First Strike To Japan On Saudi Cup Card

Fresh off major showings at the Breeders' Cup and Hong Kong International races, Japan brought a formidable squad to Riyadh for the Saudi Cup card on Saturday, and the nation lodged first blow with Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) leading every step of the way to take the G3 Neom Turf Cup.

The winner of a pair of Group 2s going a mile and a half and 2500 metres in 2020 as a 3-year-old, Authority was upped to two miles during the first part of his campaign last year. He was a neck second in the G3 Diamond S. at Tokyo before finishing down the field in the G1 Tenno Sho Spring, and was subsequently dropped back to 2500 metres to defend his title in the G2 Copa Republica Argentina. He came on the international radar, however, with his second-place finish to superstar Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in last year's Japan Cup, and was making his first start since on Saturday and his first international run.

Breaking on top and encouraged to stay there by Christophe Lemaire, Authority soon found himself in an easy canter on the lead as last year's G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) raced wide in midpack from his wide gate with the Aga Khan's Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) one path to his inside and America's Channel Cat (English Channel) behind them. Authority arrived at the top of the stretch traveling best and was never in danger, extending his lead to up to three lengths and ultimately hitting the line a length and a half clear of a mildly rallying pack that was led by Kaspar (Ger) (Pivotal {GB}), a former German runner now trained locally. Ebaiyra got up for third in her first start for trainer Francis Graffard following the retirement of Alain de Royer Dupre. There was drama further back as Channel Cat was squeezed between a tiring Pyledriver and a closing Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and came down, but both he and jockey Joel Rosario were deemed ok after the incident.

“I had the best horse in the race,” said Lemaire. “I settled the pace the way I wanted, without any pressure. Then he used his long acceleration and did the same he used to do in Japan. He was very comfortable and at the end his strength made the difference. I knew he could stay the trip very well. The ground is firm, which we wanted. The plan was to go to the front and it worked out. I knew he would be very relaxed. At about 2000 metres I let him go; he did very well.

“The Japan Cup is one of the best races in the world; my horse was beaten by a Triple Crown horse in Contrail. The level in Japan is very high so it gave me a lot of confidence running second that day.”

Trainer Tetsuya Kimura said after winning with his first overseas runner: “To win a race like this is unbelievable. It was a great ride from Christophe Lemaire from the front. It is the highlight of my career. We started thinking about this race when he finished second in the Japan Cup. He likes racing left-handed, so that was one of the reasons for coming here. All going well, he will go to Dubai next month for the Sheema Classic. I would like to thank the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia for giving us the opportunity to come here.”

Jockey Martin Dwyer said of Pyledriver, who eventually finished 11th of 13 finishers, “The draw hammered me–my only hope was there was so much pace in the race on paper and I hoped it would give me a chance to get inside, but it didn't, they went slow and I was trapped deep with no cover. I had no petrol left but it was no fault of the horse. We live to fight another day.”

Pedigree Notes

Authority comes from one of the top families in Japan as of late. His dam, Rosalind (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S), is out of the GI American Oaks and Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}), and therefore Rosalind is a full-sister to G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) and Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia (Jpn), who has started his stud career remarkably well as the sire of three Group 1 winners from his first three crops including the Japanese Fillies Triple Crown winner Daring Tact (Jpn). Epiphaneia and Rosalind's siblings also include the champion 3-year-old and Classic-winning Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and champion 2-year-old Leontes (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}). Authority is one of 15 group winners for Orfevre, formerly a very popular runner in Japan and winner of the Japanese Triple Crown and two G1 Arima Kinens and twice runner-up in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Danon Beluga Boards Classic Trail at Tokyo

Twelve months ago, Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) posted an authoritative success in the G3 Kyodo News Service Hai en route to a victory in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) and ultimately Japanese Horse of the Year honours. While it remains to be seen whether Danox Inc.'s Danon Beluga (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) can ascend to similar heights, the bay colt stamped himself as one to watch with a 1 1/2-length defeat of narrowly favoured Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) in Sunday's 1800-metre test at Tokyo.

The third betting choice at 29-10, the son of 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up Coasted (Tizway) raced in about mid-division and was kept out of harm's way by Kohei Matsuyama as Be Astonished (Jpn) (American Patriot) galloped them along over turf that was listed as good, but appeared to have a fair bit of juice in it on a rainy afternoon. Creeping into contention wide on the course with 600 metres to travel, Danon Beluga came after the pacesetter in earnest at the furlong grounds and finished with good energy to score comfortably. Geoglyph, victorious at Group 3 level last year, ran on for second.

Pedigree Notes:

Katsumi Yoshida acquired former Jeff Treadway colorbearer Coasted for $1.3 million at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and foaled this colt Feb. 7, 2019. A little more than five months later, Danon Beluga was hammered down to this prominent owner for the equivalent of $1,472,000 at the JRHA Select Sale in Hokkaido. Coasted is herself a daughter of MGSW/GISP Malibu Pier, who is also responsible for Coasted's MGSP year-older full-sister Malibu Stacy. Treadway also sold three-time Grade I winner Sweet Reason (Street Sense) to Yoshida for $2.7 million at FTKNOV in 2015.

Coasted is represented by a 2-year-old filly by the late Duramente (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), a yearling filly by Daiwa Major (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) and is due to Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) this season.

In addition to TVG and RTN, the ceremony will be streamed live on NTRA.com, americasbestracing.net  (ABR), Bloodhorse.com, DRF.com, Equibase.com, MyRaceHorse.com (YouTube), santaanita.com/live, Thoroughbred Daily News (www.theTDN.com), TOBA.org and XBTV.com.

In voting that concluded Feb. 2, fans voted for #JapaneseDuo as the top Moment of 2021. On 13 previous occasions, Japanese-based horses had failed to win a race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, but that changed at the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup when DMM Dream Club's Loves Only You won the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, giving Japan its first-ever Breeders' Cup triumph. Two hours later, U. Carrot Farm's Marche Lorraine shocked the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, winning by a nose at 49-1.

Moment of the Year voters had the opportunity to choose from 11 occurrences in 2021.

Following #JapaneseDuo in second place was #DiversityStepForward when George Leonard became the first African American trainer to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Japan’s Breeders’ Cup Double Named 2021 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment Of The Year

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that the breakthrough performance by Japanese horses Loves Only You (JPN) and Marche Lorraine (JPN) at the 38th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar last November has been voted the 2021 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year based on the results of 3,000 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be recognized this evening at the 51st Annual Eclipse Awards presented by 1/ST Racing, FanDuel Racing Group and the NTRA at Santa Anita Park. The Eclipse Awards ceremony will air live on TVG and Racetrack Television Network (RTN) beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

In addition to TVG and RTN, the ceremony will be streamed live on NTRA.com, americasbestracing.net (ABR), Bloodhorse.com, DRF.com, Equibase.com, MyRaceHorse.com (YouTube), santaanita.com/live Thoroughbred Daily News (TDN.com), TOBA.org and XBTV.com.

In voting concluded Feb. 2, fans voted for #JapaneseDuo as the top Moment of 2021. On 13 previous occasions, Japanese-based horses had failed to win a race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, but all that changed dramatically at last year's Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. On Nov. 6, DMM Dream Club's 5-year-old mare, Loves Only You, slipped between horses and won the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and gave Japan its first-ever Breeders' Cup triumph. Not to be outdone, but just two hours later, U. Carrot Farm's Marche Lorraine shocked the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, winning by a nose at 49-1, and awarding Japan its second win at the World Championships.

Moment of the Year voters chose from 11 occurrences in 2021 illustrating a range of human emotions as well as outstanding displays of equine athleticism. Following #JapaneseDuo in second place was #DiversityStepForward when George Leonard became the first African American trainer to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Past Moments of the Year

The first-ever “NTRA Moment of the Year” was the touching scene between Charismatic and jockey Chris Antley following the 1999 Belmont Stakes. The next year's winner was the stretch run of the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic, which saw Tiznow hold on for a dramatic victory against Giant's Causeway.

Tiznow won again the following year as fans selected his stirring repeat victory in the Classic over Sakhee. In 2002, fans cited the passing of the last living Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. In 2003, the popular Kentucky Derby win by Funny Cide was selected. Birdstone's upset win in the Belmont Stakes over Smarty Jones took down top honors for 2004. In 2005, fans selected Afleet Alex's spectacular victory in the 2005 Preakness Stakes.

Voters in 2006 chose Barbaro's gallant struggle to recover from his Preakness injury while at the New Bolton Center. The 2007 Moment of the Year was a historic victory by the filly Rags to Riches over Curlin in the Belmont Stakes. In 2008, it was Zenyatta's win in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Zenyatta “repeated” in 2009 as fans selected her triumph in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

In 2010, fans selected Blame's narrow Breeders' Cup Classic victory over Zenyatta. Drosselmeyer's hard-fought win over Game on Dude in the Breeders' Cup Classic was the public's choice for 2011. For 2012, the recovery of Paynter from near-deadly battles with laminitis and colitis captured the hearts of voters like no other story. In 2013, fans recognized Mucho Macho Man's nose victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic for his popular connections. The 2014 award went to California Chrome's dominant win in Kentucky Derby 140. In 2015 there was a landslide vote in favor of American Pharoah's historic Triple Crown-clinching Belmont Stakes win. In 2016, California Chrome was again part of the winning moment – a dramatic Dubai World Cup victory that came as Victor Espinoza's saddle slipped out from underneath him.

In 2017, the tragic fire at San Luis Rey and the industry's response led the way among the votes cast while Justify's sweep of the Classics to become just the 13th Triple Crown winner was the clear pick the following year. In 2019, Maximum Security's historic disqualification in the 145th Kentucky Derby — the first winner in Derby history to be demoted for a racing infraction — earned the distinction.

Authentic's stirring triumph in the 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve was voted the 2020 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year.

The Eclipse Awards are sponsored by Roberts Communications, Four Roses Bourbon, Daily Racing Form, Breeders' Cup, FanDuel Group, The Stronach Group and 1/ST Racing, Santa Anita Park, TVG, Dean Dorton, Stonestreet Farm, Keeneland, Racetrack Television Network, Jackson Family Wines, EquinEdge, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Hallway Feeds and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.
