American Pharoah Colt Tries The Turf in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Niigata Racecourse, featuring the offspring of a couple of Coolmore sires, one looking to build on a promising debut and the other looking for a second straight victory. Sunday's TDN will include four US-breds making their respective first trips to the races:

1st-NII, ¥9,900,000 ($74k), Maiden, 2yo, 2000mT
PSY BREAKER (c, 2, Uncle Mo–Downside Scenario, by Scat Daddy), a $400,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, gave an excellent account of himself going this distance at Fukushima July 10, running on gamely to be beaten a half-length into second. The Mar. 30 foal is a half-brother to 'TDN Rising Star' Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief), and his dam–who was acquired for $250,000 carrying the colt that would become Mutasaabeq at Keeneland January in 2018–was resold to Stonestreet for $1.15 million back in foal to Into Mischief at Keeneland November last fall. Downside Scenario is a half-sister to Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy), twice a Group 3-winning sprinter in Dubai. B-BlackRidge Stables LLC (KY)

9th-NII, ¥30,400,000 ($229k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
ADVANCE PHAROAH (c, 2, American Pharoah–Fair Huntress, by Tiznow) debuted with a sound runner-up effort going 1400 meters over the dirt at Tokyo June 19, but shortened up to graduate nicely over 1150 meters at Fukushima last time July 17 (see below, SC 10). The $140,000 KEESEP yearling has the pedigree to take to this new surface, as his unraced dam is a half-sister to Grade III winner Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GI American Oaks heroine Competitionofideas (Speightstown); and turf stakes winner Kolo (Dynaformer). Oscar Performance Represented By First Japanese Winner

Sent off the 2-1 second betting favorite, Meiner Vision (Jpn) sat three wide the trip and battled on bravely through the final furlong to become the first Japanese winner and third overall for Mill Ridge Farm's freshman sire Oscar Performance (Kitten's Joy–Devine Actress, by Theatrical {Ire}) in an 1800-meter maiden at Fukushima Racecourse.

Drawn gate 11 in a scratched-down field of 12, the bay was nudged along early to take up a prominent position and landed three wide punching the breeze while firmly held by jockey Yukito Ishikawa. Settled nicely while maintaining his position into the final half-mile, the Apr. 12 foal remained three deep on the turn and was asked for some acceleration as they reached the top of the straight. Narrowly in front at the 200-meter marker, Meiner Vision looked to be headed for a stride or two by third choice My Reine (Jpn) (Logotype {Jpn}), but dug in determinedly and reported home a 3/4-length winner (SC 11).

Meiner Vision is the third foal of and first winner from his dam, $290,000 Keeneland September graduate Songoficeandfire (Dynaformer), who carried the silks of Diane Snowden and was trained by Bill Mott to placings in the 12-furlong GIII Orchid S. and GIII Bewitch S. in 2016. The mare, a daughter of G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Catchascatchcan (GB) (Pursuit of Love {GB}) and a half-sister to to Irish Group 2 winner and GI Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up Antonius Pius (Danzig), was offered by Denali Stud carrying this colt in utero at the 2020 Keeneland January Sale, where she was hammered down to Big Red Farm for $200,000. Songoficeandfire was barren to Danon Ballade (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) for 2021 and produced a filly by Gold Ship (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) Feb. 16.

Four-time Grade I winner and track-record setter Oscar Performance, already the sire of the stakes-placed Andthewinneris from 85 reported first-crop foals, stood the 2022 breeding season at a fee of $12,500.

Notable US-Bred and -Sired Runners in Japan: July 24, 2022

MEINER VISION (JPN) (c, 2, Oscar Performance–Songoficeandfire, by Dynaformer) turned in a very promising debut effort when tried over this distance at Tokyo June 25, finishing a good third (see below, SC 15), and stands to come on in leaps and bounds for the effort. The Apr. 12 foal's dam, twice placed in Grade III contests over 12 furlongs on the turf, is a half-sister to Irish Group 2 winner and three-times GI/G1SP Antonius Pius (Danzig), and cost Big Red Farm $200,000 carrying this foal in utero at Keeneland January in 2020. 10th-KOK, ¥28,710,000 ($209k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1700m
SHAILENE (f, 3, Arrogate–Amen Hallelujah, by Montbrook), a $150,000 KEESEP yearling turned $1-million OBSAPR breezer, a maiden winner at second asking over nine furlings, was third in a seven-furlong Tokyo allowance May 22 and most recently defeated fellow U.S.-bred Per Aa (American Pharoah) when stretched back out over course and trip July 10. The filly's dam was a two-time Grade II winner and placed in no fewer than six Grade I events from seven to 8 1/2 furlongs and on both dirt and turf. B-Town and Country Horse Farms LLC (KY)

A $140,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by trainer Hideyuki Mori, the chestnut is out of an unraced half-sister to Grade III winner Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), the dam of GI American Oaks winner Competitionofideas (Speightstown), who was purchased by Shadai Farm for $1.3 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2020. 3rd-KOK, ¥9,900,000 ($71k), Maiden, 2yo, 1000m
ART PEPPER (c, 2, Frosted–Tim's Girl, by Broken Vow) appeared not to handle the turf when finishing well down the field on career debut June 12 and connections will be hoping a switch to the main track will do the trick here. Purchased by Mori for $150,000 at KEESEP last fall, the gray is out of a daughter of the stakes-winning Rich Find (Exploit), whose daughter Heavenly Hellos (Overanalyze) recently took out the Horseshoe Indianapolis S. Rich Find was also responsible for Grade I-placed juvenile filly Broken Spell (Broken Vow), herself the dam of SW Lord Dragon (Oxbow).
