Goldencents Colt Looks To Go One Better at Chukyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Chukyo and Nakayama Racecourses:

Saturday, January 7, 2023
3rd-NKY, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1200m
HARDWIRED (c, 3, Hard Spun–Season Maker, by Pioneerof the Nile) is the first foal out of an unplaced daughter of the late French SW & MGSP Season's Greetings (Ire) (Ezzoud {Ire}), whose daughter Grace Hall (Empire Maker) won the 2011 GI Spinaway S. at two and the GII Delaware, Gulfstream and Indiana Oaks as a sophomore. Also the dam of a newly christened juvenile colt by Mendelssohn, Season Maker was sold in foal to Frosted for $55,000 at Keeneland November this past fall. B-Godolphin (KY)

4th-CKO, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
HAKAISHIN (c, 3, Runhappy–Elarose, by Storm Cat) looks to become the fifth foal from as many to the races for his dam, a daughter of three-time Grade I winner and foundation mare Take Charge Lady (Dehere). The latter's produce include GISW sires Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and champion MGISW Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song); GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah); and the dams of champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) and MGISW Omaha Beach (War Front); and of GSW/GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit). Masatake Iida acquired Elarose for $450,000 in foal to Quality Road at KEENOV in 2018. B-Chiyoda Farm (KY)

MONTE LUNA (f, 3, Union Rags–Light the Sky, by Tapit) cost $75,000 as a KEESEP yearling and is out of a half-sister to champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen Got Even) and Theyskens' Theory (Bernardini), a Group 3 winner and placed in Group 1 company as a juvenile in England and second to Winter Memories (El Prado {Ire}) in the GI Garden City S. in 2011. B-Peter J Callahan, Runnymede Farm Inc, Enid Cafritz & Haras d'Etreham (KY)

5th-CKO, ¥10,480,000, Maiden, 3yo, 1600mT
AIR METEORA (c, 3, Goldencents–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) turned in a very promising effort on his lone racetrack appearance, making the majority of the running in an 1800-meter newcomers' event Nov. 20 only to be run down close home (see below, SC 8). This slight cutback in trip can only help the half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), SW Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and the talented Air Sage (Point of Entry). Nokaze is herself a half-sister to Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), the stakes-winning dam of GSW Yuugiri (Shackleford), an impressive Oaklawn allowance winner first off a near eight-month absence at Oaklawn Dec. 30. B-Sekie & Tsunebumi Yoshihara (KY)

Justify Colt Yuttitham Posts Another Impressive Win at Hanshin

6th-Hanshin, ¥14,250,000 ($106,284), Allowance, 2yo, 1800m, 1:53.9, ft.
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa {GISW, $783,550}, by City Zip) improved for a debut second at Sapporo Aug. 27 to graduate by eight lengths when last seen over this course and distance Dec. 3 and was a warm item to put them back-to-back in this seasonal finale. Beaten for speed, the flashy chestnut was content to punch the breeze three wide and was poised to strike from the position as they neared the straight. Asked for his best by premiership-winning jockey Yuga Kawada with a furlong and a half to run, Yuttitham opened up with fluid strides and went on to score by three lengths as the 1-2 chalk. Upset winner of the 2017 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland for Empyrean Stables and trainer Michael Stidham, Zipessa was hammered down to Shadai for $1.25 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale and was bred to this Triple Crown winner before heading to Japan.  The investment was immediately recouped when Makoto Kaneko–in whose silks the legendary Deep Impact (Jpn) was campaigned–paid ¥200 million for the colt at last year's JRHA Select Sales. Yuttitham has a yearling half-brother by Isla Bonita (Jpn) that fetched ¥76 million ($558,835) at this year's Select Sale and a weanling half-sister by Deep Impact's son Kizuna (Jpn). Zipessa is due to Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) for 2023. Sales history: $1,815,520 Ylg '21 JRHAJUL. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $$115,019.

DONA SWEAT (f, 2, Justify–No Sweat, by Blame), a $425,000 Keeneland September graduate, debuted over this course and distance a bit more than two weeks ago and led deep into the final furlong only to be overhauled in the final strides (video, SC 5). The late January foal is out of a multiple stakes-placed daughter of MSW & MGSP Coolwind (Forest Wildcat), also the dam of GIII Iowa Derby winner Looking Cool (Candy Ride {Arg}). Dona Sweat is the first foal for No Sweat, who was purchased by Ashview Farm for $300,000 at Keeneland November in 2018. B-Ashview Farm & Colts Neck Stables (KY)

6th-HSN, ¥14,250,000, Allowance, 2yo, 1800m

Shadai Farm acquired the colt's GSW & MGISP dam for $1.25 million at KEENOV in 2018 and put her in foal to the Triple Crown winner before being exported. Yuttitham is the 1-2 favorite overnight and has the services of champion jockey Yuga Kawada. B-Shadai Farm

Equinox Overpowers Rivals in Arima Kinen

Five years after his sire clinched a second consecutive Horse of the Year title in Japan with a victory in the G1 Arima Kinen, Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) stated his case for top year-end honours for 2022 with a dominating display in front of a pandemic-restricted, but boisterous crowd of roughly 47,000 fans Christmas Day at Nakayama Racecourse.

The firming 13-10 favourite in the fan-voted affair, Equinox left without incident from gate nine and landed in midfield on the back of defending champion and reigning Horse of the Year Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) as Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn})–returning off an 11th in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe–showed the way at an even tempo. Content with his position through the middle furlongs, Christophe Lemaire eased Equinox out for a four-wide sweep around the turn and it was all academic from there, as the flashy dark bay struck the front with a furlong and a half to travel and kicked on smartly. Boldog Hos (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}), this year's G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) runner-up, also made a bold move on the bend from far back and was a brave second ahead of G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup heroine Geraldina (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}), who closed off well after missing the kick. Efforia was a meritorious fifth first off a six-month absence.

“What happens twice will happen thrice,” said the winning jockey who was recording a 43rd Group 1 on the JRA circuit. “I won the Arima Kinen with Heart's Cry and Satono Diamond both on Christmas Day, and I'm really happy to be able to win the race on Christmas Day again. We were able to make a good start and the horse was keen to go so I held him and responded strongly when I brought him to the outside. Though he was not mature yet during his spring campaign, he became really strong from this fall and I look forward to his performance next year.”

Winning trainer Tetsuya Kimura indicated that Equinox is likely to travel in early 2023, with the Saudi Cup program a potential starting point.

“But first I need to watch his condition after the race,” the conditioner said.

Pedigree Notes:

Kitasan Black, who was narrowly second to Satono Diamond in 2016 before closing his career in this race, is the sire of 64 winners from his first two crops to the races and is also responsible for group winners Gaia Force (Jpn) from his first crop as well as the 2-year-old filly Ravel (Jpn), who took out this year's G2 Artemis S. Equinox's year-older half-brother Weiss Meteor (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) also carried the Silk Racing colours to victory in last year's G3 Radio Nikkei Sho. Shadai Farm acquired Equinox's fourth dam Blanche Reine (Fr) (Nureyev) carrying Maison Blanche for $410,000 at the 1988 Keeneland November Sale. Chateau Blanche is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Just a Way (Jpn) and a yearling filly by Kizuna (Jpn). She was blank for 2022 and is due for a full-sibling to Equinox in 2023.
