Henny Hughes Colt Runs To Favoritism In Hyacinth S.

With soon-to-be-retired jockey Yuichi Fukunaga at the controls, Perriere (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) came to life entering the final furlong of Sunday's Listed Hyacinth S. at Tokyo Racecourse and proved far too strong for his rivals in picking up 30 points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Winner of his first two trips to the races, Perriere was made the 11-10 favorite for the Hyacinth in his first start since a third to G3 Saudi Derby hopeful Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) in the second leg of the series, the Listed Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Kawasaki Dec. 14. Alertly away from gate three, the blinkered bay colt hugged the fence in the second flight of horses and was patiently handled for the run into the final 600 meters. Steered out into the four path, Perriere had aim on the front-runners at the furlong grounds and came away in the final sixteenth of a mile to score by 1 1/2 lengths (see below, SC 3). Z Lien (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) rallied for second at 51-1, while 45-1 chance Eclogite (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) nosed out second wagering choice Great Sand Sea (Into Mischief) for third. The final time for the one-turn mile on fast dirt was 1:37.2. With 36 points, Perriere is the leader in the series, with the Fukuryu S. (allowance) over nine furlongs at Nakayama Mar. 25 the final race.

Perriere is campaigned by Yuji Hasegawa, whose name has graced American bloodstock sales for the last several years. He purchased Vanishing Point (Tapit)–a full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella–for $1.5 million at KEESEP in 2019 and paid $750,000 for the Arrogate colt Poison Arrow at the same event in 2020. Hasegawa also races Open Fire (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}–Go Maggie Go), recent runner-up in the G3 Kisaragi Sho and a candidate for this year's Japanese Classics.

Purchased for ¥11 million at the 2021 Hokkaido Summer Yearling Sale, Perriere is the 43rd worldwide stakes winner for Henny Hughes and his 16th in Japan. The colt's third dam is two-time European champion Ski Paradise (Lyphard), winner in France of the G1 Prix du Moulin over a mile and runner-up to Lure in the 1993 GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

Champion Caledonia Road’s First Foal Debuts at Tokyo

ERIKA BONITA (f, 3, Justify–Caledonia Road, by Quality Road) is the first foal out of her dam, whose upset victory in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies propelled her to Eclipse Awards honors that season. Purchased by Narvick International, agent, for $2.3 million at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Caledonia Road–a half-sister to MGSW Officiating (Blame) and SW One of a Kind (Lemon Drop Kid)–was bred to this Triple Crown winner on an early cover and foaled this filly in Kentucky on Jan. 20, 2020. Put back in foal to Justify soon after, she was exported to Japan and the colt that she produced Jan. 27, 2021 fetched ¥135 million ($1,223,338) at the JHRA Select Sales less than six months later. The current yearling out of Caledonia Road sold for $800,000 at the same event last July. B-Grand Stud (KY)

Godolphin’s Lemon Pop Prevails In February S. Prep

From the first time he first set foot on the racetrack in late 2020, Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid) has always hinted at top ability, and the beautifully bred 5-year-old scooped the first major prize of his career with a hard-fought victory in Sunday's G3 Negishi S., a stepping-stone to the G1 February S. in three weeks' time.

Away awkwardly from the 13 hole, the $70,000 Keeneland November weanling purchase on behalf of Godolphin improved to race in the second flight of horses about three away from the inside for the opening half-mile. Pulled out into the four path leaving the 600-metre pole, the chestnut was roused to the front with a little more than a furlong to race and finished willingly to hold off the fast-finishing Gilded Mirror (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), reversing the form of their last meeting in this track's G3 Musashino S. over a mile Nov. 12. Lemon Pop was running his record over the Tokyo 1400 metres to five-from-five.

Unreachable, a daughter of the legendary Danehill (Danzig)'s Grade III-winning full-sister Harpia and also a half to New York-based stallion Redesdale (Speightstown), was unplaced in a pair of 3-year-old starts for Juddmonte and Dermot Weld and was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock, on behalf of former Darley Chief Operating Officer Olly Tait and his wife Amber, for 165,000gns ($278,915) at the 2012 Tattersalls December Mare sale.

Unreachable was led out unsold on a bid of $55,000 at the 2020 Keeneland January Sale, and the foal she was carrying at the time, a Good Magic colt, was purchased by China Horse Club/Gandharvi for $325,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2021 before CHC bought out their partner for $240,000 during the HORA section of last year's KEENOV sale. The mare is also responsible for a 2-year-old colt by Good Magic, a yearling Maclean's Music colt and is due to that Hill 'n' Dale sire for 2023. Lemon Pop's third dam also includes Danehill's accomplished full-brothers Eagle Eyed and Shibboleth. Lemon Pop is the 107th stakes winer and 49th graded/group winner for the now 27-year-old Lemon Drop Kid.

Half To Mozu Ascot Debuts at Tokyo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo and Tokyo Racecourses. Sunday's headliner at headquarters is the G3 Negishi S. over 1400 meters, the local lead-up into the G1 February S. going a mile on Feb. 19. The April-foaled bay, who carries the Silk Racing colors, is the second Japanese winner for her well-traveled dam, who is also responsible for the outstanding sprinter Copano Kicking (Spring At Last), a three-time winner at group level in Japan–including the 2019 Negishi S.–and a dramatic winner of the Riyadh Dirt Sprint on Saudi Cup night in 2021.
