Sons And Lovers Provides Tonic For The Morrisses

Study Of Man (Ire) is making a growing impression with his first crop of runners, not least through his son Deepone (Ire), winner of the G2 Beresford S. for Vimal Khosla and Paddy Twomey.

His latest winner, however, is perhaps the most special to Kirsten Rausing, the owner of Lanwades Stud where the son of Deep Impact (Jpn) stands. On Saturday at Newmarket, the newcomer Sons And Lovers (GB) got up on the line to win the seven-furlong juvenile maiden. Rausing, who bred the colt from the Smart Strike mare So In Love (GB), races him in partnership with her close friends Hugo and Maya Morriss, two immensely popular members of the Newmarket racing fraternity and the former owners of Banstead Manor Stud. Hugo was also a long-serving steward at both Newmarket racecourses.

He and his wife Maya, who has been on long-term dialysis treatment, were able to be at the Rowley Mile thanks to the forethought of Jane Chapple-Hyam, who trains Sons And Lovers and gained special permission for the Morrises to be brought near to the winning line on the far side of the track in a mobility vehicle, which allowed Maya to watch from her wheelchair in the company of her trainer and her friend Wendy Milbank.

Chapple-Hyam explained how she gave the owners an impromptu race-call as their colt made his debut. “I'm not a very good commentator,” she said. “It went something along the lines of 'sat last, now joint-second last, he has pulled out and is third' and then, 'he is coming through', then, 'oh, he's won!'”

The trainer added, “I was expecting him to finish in the first three. He is a lovely horse. He is still a bit raw and he has got bit of maturing to do. He is a lovely mover but I was worried the ground might be too quick. I think we will put him away now and look forward to next season.”

Parading in front of the stands is usually the preserve of Group 1 winners but, before returning to the winner's enclosure, jockey David Egan brought Sons And Lovers partially back down the track to greet the Morrisses. It was a touching move that wouldn't have been witnessed by many on course on Saturday, but meant the world to Hugo and Maya Morriss.

Just over an hour earlier, the brilliant Inspiral (GB) and Frankie Dettori had stolen the show with a dazzling performance in the Sun Chariot, but far and away the most moving moment of the day was seeing that two-year-old, brimming with promise, head over to the far rail to be greeted by his delighted owners. In tough times, these Thoroughbreds have a way of lifting us up. Of helping us dream of better days to come.

Soldier’s Call’s Born To Rock A New TDN Rising Star

Aptly-named, Laurence Holder's 2-year-old Royal Ascot-bound debutante Born To Rock (Ire) (Soldier's Call {GB}–Love To Rock {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) burned up Yarmouth's ever-drying turf on Wednesday to become the latest TDN Rising Star. Prepared for the five-furlong British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' S. by Jane Chapple-Hyam having been purchased for 110,000gns at the Tatts Guineas Breeze Up Sale, the bay fitted with the stable's white bridle and reins showed key early pace under Robert Tart racing away from the main pack towards the far side. Always in command on the front end, the 7-2 second favourite opened up passing two out and was being eased late as she registered a 4 1/4-length defeat of the Gosdens' newcomer Jiwin (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with 3/4 of a length back to the Michael Bell-trained Mirroring (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Ballyhane Stud-based Soldier's Call's first TDN Rising Star from his first crop, the winner is on target for the G2 Queen Mary S. according to Chapple-Hyam. “She's worked with the horse in the previous race and with the colt that won last week and they've all been thereabouts in the gallops, but she's turned it on this afternoon,” she said. “We have to go for the Queen Mary, definitely.”

“She was a gorgeous physical as a yearling,” Derryconnor Stud's Katie Mcgivern told TDN Europe. “She had a huge walk, great use of herself with strength and size.”

Mcgivern purchased the filly for €17,000 at the Goffs Sportsman's Sale and subsequently sold her for 110,000gns to Amanda Skiffington (agent for Laurence Holder) at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale.

“She toed out a little which reflected her €17,000 price tag but my husband Tom and I couldn't leave her behind. She was always such an athlete,” she said.

“She was easy to break and prep for the breeze-up sales throughout the winter. We knew we had something special as she not only had the pace but she had this huge stride to go with it and loved her work.”

“We were very excited about her heading to the Guineas Sale but Soldier's Call only had one winner at that stage so knew there was going to be a limit to what she was worth.”

The Ballyhane stallion has since had a flurry of winners taking his total to nine.

“She's a filly with a very exciting future as she's not just a sharp 2-year-old type. She has size and scope and more developing still to do so we look forward to how she progresses throughout the season. We very much look forward to her lining up in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot with a fighting chance.”

One of nine winners from the first crop of the speedy and accomplished son of Showcasing (GB), Born To Rock is a grandson of the GIII Athenia H. runner-up I'm In Love (Zafonic) who produced the G3 Stockholms Stora Pris scorer Match Maker (Ire) (Declaration Of War) and the GIII Miesque S. winner More Than Love (More Than Ready). A distant relative of the sire Weldnaas, the moderate performer Love To Rock has just the sole progeny to date.

Claymore Set To Resume In Brigadier Gerard

Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}), winner of last year's G3 Hampton Court S. at Royal Ascot and not sighted since finishing fourth behind Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in the G2 York S. last July, is scheduled to make his seasonal debut in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Sandown May 25, with the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe a potential long-term objective.

The Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained colt could encounter last year's returning G1 Derby winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in what is shaping up into a mouthwatering renewal of the 10-furlong race.

Chapple-Hyam said: “Claymore is going for the Brigadier Gerard. He just got very jarred up at York. We got him ready to run at the Arc meeting and then it went bog-soft everywhere. It went from one extreme to the other, so we decided to pull the pin and have a lovely 4-year-old for this year.”

Should all go well at Sandown, Chapple-Hyam will likely return to Ascot and raised the possibility of an Arc bid.

“We will see what we do in the Brigadier Gerard, but he is in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot and I don't know, is he a 50-1 shot for the Arc?

“The entries were on Tuesday and we've put him in–there's no harm. You just don't know if he'll make the cut, but better to be there than having to supplement.”

In other news from the yard, the full-brother to Chapple-Hyam's Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who was sold for 3.6 million guineas at the end of last season, arrived with the Newmarket handler on Tuesday morning.

Granger Bay (Ire), who fetched €450,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale, will run in the colours of Fiona Carmichael, having been in pre-training with Malcolm Bastard.

“I am a very lucky lady to be given the honour to train him,” said Chapple-Hyam. “He was bought from the Goffs sales and sent to Malcolm to be broken in.

“We felt we didn't want to rush him into a training yard in January or February as is the normal time slot, we said wait until after the Guineas, so he arrived on Tuesday morning.

“Fiona also has Intellogent (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) and Aplomb (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the yard. It was really nice to get the call and I'm very happy with the squad I've got this year.”

Saffron Beach Retired And Set For Date With Frankel

Connections of Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) have announced on Valentine's Day that the dual Group 1 winner is set for a date with superstar stallion Frankel (GB) after bringing the curtain down on the career of Jane Chapple-Hyam's top-notcher.

Saffron Beach had been earmarked for a tilt at the G1 Saudi Cup after selling to Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz's Najd Stud for 3.6 million at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

However, it was confirmed on Tuesday that the six-time winner, who recorded just shy of £1 million in career-earnings, would embark on a new career as a broodmare rather than take on the Saudi Cup challenge after an unsatisfactory scope.

Runner-up to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the G1 1000 Guineas in 2021, Saffron Beach broke her Group 1 duck when accounting for that rival in the Sun Chariot S. back at Newmarket in October of that same season.

The second of her top-level triumphs came in the Prix Rothschild last summer, where Saffron Beach accounted for a classy field to win in comfortable fashion under William Buick.

Chapple-Hyam tweeted of the daughter of the winning Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven's Pass), “After a routine scope that was unsatisfactory for travel to the Saudi Cup, Saffron Beach has been retired from racing and will now visit Frankel at Juddmonte Farms.

“I wish to think Prince Faisal Bin Khaled and his team for entrusting me with her training and wish her all the best for her breeding career.”

Continua, a Raven's Pass half-sister to Falling Petals is the dam of Group 3 winner and rising sire star Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).
