Arrogate’s Tiny Temper Goes Last To First In Azeri

The only GIII Azeri S. entry to not have tried stakes company, Tiny Temper (Arrogate) ran like a giant down the lane on Saturday afternoon in Hot Springs in the prep for next month's GI Apple Blossom S.

Breaking her maiden at second asking over the slop as a late juvenile at Churchill Downs, the bay was not seen until she ran fourth against allowance company at Ellis Park last summer. Taking a break until the beginning of this year, the older filly faced off-the-turf allowance foes at Fair Grounds Jan. 25 and won by a half-length with a Beyer figure of 92.

Stepping into much deeper waters as an 11-1 shot here, the 4-year-old spotted the field several lengths as favorite Hot and Sultry (Speightster) and Bellamore (Empire Maker) traded blows into the first turn. Looking like a little engine who could up the backstretch, Tiny Temper chased the pace around the far turn and hugged the rail into the lane.

As the leaders looked like they were in slow motion, fellow longshot Misty Veil (Tonalist) highjacked the lead with a furlong left. However, it was James Graham's mount who tipped to the two path, ranged up to the outside of her target and got her picture taken with a gutsy performance.

“Don't be afraid to get in there,” said trainer Dallas Stewart. “She (Tiny Temper) showed up big today. We believed in her all along. It's just taken a while. Hopefully, we'll get back to the Apple Blossom. After she won (Jan. 25 entry-level allowance at Fair Grounds), I was like: 'We need to be serious about what we're doing with her quick.' Just get in some good races. This was on the (radar), for sure.”

Pedigree Notes:
Out of three racing crops, this was the 18th stakes winner and 12th graded stakes winner for deceased sire Arrogate. Out of SW Forestier (Forestry), the winner's dam is responsible for a 3-year-old colt by Gun Runner, who Repole Stable bought for $350,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale. Her last registered foal is currently a 2-year-old colt by McKinzie.

Graham Scores 3,000th Win at Fair Grounds

James Graham earned his 3,000th career win when he piloted Vortex to victory in the second race at Fair Grounds Sunday.

“It's quite emotional actually,” Graham said. “I came here in 2002 and all I ever wanted was a shot. I wish my mom was still alive to see this. Thank you to everybody who has ever put me on a winner throughout my whole career. This is all because of you guys. Thank you to my wife. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be where I am. Fair Grounds has been good to me over the years. I've made a lot of friends and lost a lot of friends. Racing is a life and we are all a big family. Thank you to everybody.”

Graham recorded one win in his native Ireland before launching his career in the U.S. where his first victory came at River Downs on July 1, 2003 aboard B.J. Star for trainer Allan Shapoff in just his 12th mount. Later that year, his first Fair Grounds victory came aboard High Octave for trainer Ronny Werner. With 1,340 wins, Graham is the third winningest rider at Fair Grounds since 1986, behind Ronald Ardoin and Robby Albarado.

“This is special for me doing it [at Fair Grounds],” Graham said. “My career took off here. When I first got here in 2003 and started riding, this is the meet that got the ball rolling for me. Look at the guys I started riding with here. Gerard [Melancon], Robby [Albarado], Shane Sellars, E.J. Perrodin–I got educated here. I've got a couple more goals at this track that I want to accomplish, so I'm banging on the door and I'm young, fit and healthy.”

The 44-year-old has won over 47 graded stakes, including Fair Grounds victories aboard 135-1 shot Ive Struck a Nerve in the 2013 GII Risen Star S., 28-1 shot Call Me Midnight in the 2022 GIII Lecomte S., and 7-1 shot Ron the Greek in the 2010 Lecomte.

‘Party On!’: Constitution Colt Turns In ‘Rising Star’-Worthy Performance at Churchill

Pin Oak Stud LLC's Parchment Party (Constitution), who overcame a bit of traffic and a tight spot inside at a crucial stage when belying debut odds of 16-1 over this track and distance Sept. 15, doubled up with an equally eye-catching performance in a Thursday allowance at Churchill Downs, becoming a new 'TDN Rising Star' in the process. He is the eighth 'Rising Star' for his WinStar-based stallion.

Drawn widest in a field of 10 and only lightly regarded in the wagering at just north of 11-2, the $450,000 Keeneland September yearling allowed the inside traffic to clear and was guided down towards the inside by James Graham and trailed into the backstretch. Going sweetly with the better part of a dozen lengths to find passing the half-mile marker, Parchment Party caught the eye with an inside rally around the second turn and was produced three wide into the stretch. Behind a wall of horses at the three-sixteenths, the June foal descended on the leading group five off the fence inside the final furlong and did his best work through the wire to take it by a widening 1 1/2 lengths while not appearing completely focused at the finish of what has the feel of a key race.

First World War (War Front), trying the dirt for the first time and exiting a close fourth as the favorite in the grassy GII Bourbon S. at Keeneland last month, pulled fiercely beneath Tyler Gaffalione for the opening half-mile, settled better thereafter and stayed on for second ahead of longshot Lagynos (Kantharos) in third. Catching Freedom (Constitution), the even-money chalk off a visually impressive debut going this track's one-turn mile Oct. 1, was badly blocked for a run with time ticking away and finished a luckless fourth.

Parchment Party, bred on the same cross that produced GI Belmont S. hero and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Tiz the Law and Grade III winner and 'TDN Rising Star' We the People, is half-brother to Muqtaser (Distorted Humor), MGSP, $303,605; and Darley Japan stallion American Patriot (War Front), GISW, $487,272, and is out of Life Well Lived–a full-sister to MGI/G1SW Well Armed–who was purchased by Bobby Flay in foal to American Pharoah for $1.25 million at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. Life Well Lived is also kin to GSW Witty (Distorted Humor), the dam of GSW Bombard (War Front) and MGSP Amuse (Medaglia d'Oro); and to Well Lived (Tiznow), whose recently retired daughter Played Hard (Into Mischief) won this year's GI La Troienne S. This is also the family of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Symboli Kris S (Kris S.).

Life Well Lived, who was RNAd for $775,000 when offered in foal to Curlin at KEENOV in 2019, has a yearling full brother to Parchment Party and was purchased by Machmer Hall for $360,000 at Keeneland November Thursday carrying a full-sibling to Parchment Party.

Constitution’s Parchment Party Charges Home on Churchill Debut

7th-Churchill Downs, $120,000, Msw, 9-15, 2yo, 1 1/16m, 1:45.47, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
PARCHMENT PARTY (c, 2, Constitution–Life Well Lived, by Tiznow) sported a typically steady worktab for this outfit over the Belmont training track and shipped in from the Big Apple to make his debut here as the 16-1 second-longest shot in a field of nine. Slowly into stride from the four hole, the $450,000 Keeneland September graduate was void of any speed and settled at the back of the pack behind a moderate tempo. Still last entering the final half-mile, the June foal was making progress at the fence on the turn but James Graham had to shut him down a bit at the five-sixteenths when off heels. Still full of run as they hit the stretch, Parchment Party was once again in very tight inside of 14-1 Warp Nine (Hightail) at the eighth pole, but squeezed through that opening and outfinished tough-trip Django (Medaglia d'Oro) by 1 1/4 lengths. It was also a horror watch for Warp Nine backers, as the Calumet homebred was stopped cold in traffic at a critical stage and was forced to settle for third, a further two lengths away. A half-brother to Muqtaser (Distorted Humor), MGSP, $303,605; and to Darley Japan stallion American Patriot (War Front), GISW, $487,272, Parchment Party is out of Life Well Lived–a full-sister to MGI/G1SW Well Armed–who was purchased by Bobby Flay in foal to American Pharoah for $1.25 million at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. Sales history: $450,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. Life Well Lived, who was RNAd for $750,000 when offered in foal to Curlin at KEENOV in 2019, has a yearling full-brother to Parchment Party and returned to Constitution this term.
