Sea The Stars’ Flying Honours Impresses Again

Lighting up Salisbury on Friday evening, Godolphin's TDN Rising Star Flying Honours (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) dominated the Listed Longines Irish Champions Weekend 10-11 September EBF Stonehenge S. as he had his July 27 Sandown novice to suggest he will be a leading light for next year's Derby. Always travelling comfortably under James Doyle taking a lead, the 4-11 favourite was allowed to cruise to Stormbuster (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and when let loose quickly overwhelmed that rival with over a furlong remaining en route to a 5 1/2-length success.

“He was very impressive,” his rider said. “They went a really good pace and this stiff finish definitely suited him. He travelled much smoother today and I was hoping they would take me a bit further to teach him a bit more, but this was a nice stepping stone for him and he's crossed another bridge. He doesn't ride overly-big–he's very compact and well put-together and is learning all the time. I don't think this was the strongest of listed races, so he's going to have to keep on improving.”

 

Fourth on debut in the seven-furlong Newmarket July Festival maiden won by TDN Rising Star Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and a place behind the day's Convivial Maiden-winning stablemate Desert Order (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) July 8, Flying Honours had romped to a 9 1/2-length success over that trip at Sandown last time and this was another visually impressive display as he bids to establish himself in the yard's pecking order.

The dam Powder Snow (Dubawi {Ire}) started out with this stable before joining Henri-Alex Pantall and winning the G3 Prix Fille de l'Air and a listed prize in Germany. She is a half-sister to the Listed Woodcote S. third Sea Of Snow (Distorted Humor) and to the G2 Diana-Trial and G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung-placed Snow (Ger) by Sea The Stars' Sea The Moon (Ger). The third dam is Snow Bride (Blushing Groom {Fr}), the G3 Princess Royal S. and G3 Musidora S. winner who was awarded the Oaks in 1989 on the disqualification of Aliysa (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) and later produced the Derby, King George and Arc hero Lammtarra (Nijinsky II). Powder Snow's first foal is the winning 3-year-old full-sister to the winner Snow Tempest (Ire), while her yearling filly is by Siyouni (Fr) and she also has a colt foal by Invincible Spirit (Ire).

Dubawi’s Rebel’s Romance Celebrates Career High In Germany

Godolphin's 2021 G2 UAE Derby hero Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Minidress {GB}, by Street Cry {Ire}) ended a two-race losing streak with victory in June's Listed Fred Archer S. at Newmarket, adding to his resume in Goodwood's G3 Glorious S. last month, and justified favouritism for a career high in Sunday's G1 Westminster 132nd Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten. The March-foaled gelding, unbeaten on the turf, was positioned in rear with just one rival behind for most of this 12-furlong test. Scrubbed along to reduce arrears off the home turn, the 17-10 pick launched his challenge out wide with 350 metres remaining and stayed on strongly under continued rousting inside the final furlong to hold the late rattle of Nerik (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) by a neck in ultimately snug fashion.

“He had a different start to most of our horses and we initially trained him for the dirt,” explained winning rider James Doyle. “He ended up winning the [G2] UAE Derby and I have to say it seems like he's definitely improved for the switch to turf. He came into today's race relatively unexposed, he'd only had a couple of starts on turf and he's taken to it well. He was a bit boisterous beforehand and I wanted to make sure that he was relaxed properly first. He travelled round pretty smoothly, they didn't go much of a pace and I ended up a little bit further back than ideal. He showed a good kick at the top of the straight and I thought he did a super job there today.”

Rebel's Romance, who becomes the 53rd Group 1 winner for his sire, is the leading performer out of Listed Height Of Fashion S. second Minidress (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}), whose three scorers include Listed Cairn Rouge S. third Petticoat (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Minidress is a full-sister to G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy victor Volcanic Sky (GB), with both being produced by G3 Musidora S.-winning G1 Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks placegetter Short Skirt (GB) (Diktat {GB}). Sioux Nation’s Lakota Sioux On Top In The Sweet Solera

Gallop Racing's 2-year-old distaffer Lakota Sioux (Ire) (Sioux Nation–Shemiyla {Fr} {GSW-Fr, $169,373}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) bounced back off a third in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S. to secure a career high in Saturday's G3 Jewson Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket, becoming the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy). She had earlier debuted with a May 20 third at Haydock before plundering a May 30 Lingfield maiden by 6 1/2 lengths in her penultimate start. The 10-3 second favourite was swiftly into stride and raced in a prominent third through the early fractions of this pattern-race bow. Cruising to the front in the centre of the track approaching the quarter-mile marker, she was driven along at the foot of the hill and kept on strongly under continued urging in the latter stages, all the while swishing her tail, to prevail by 3/4-of-a-length from Dandy Alys (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Lakota Sioux's victory was a fifth in the contest for the Johnston stable.

“Every time I see her in the paddock I think how the hell did I buy her for £15,000 as she is a gorgeous filly,” said Charlie Johnston. “She was difficult to break in early on and I remember it vividly as she was one of our worst problem children in the winter. The tail [swishing] has been a theme from day one. Joe Fanning has ridden her in most of her work, but he and every jockey that has ridden her does not come in and say she is not trying. You can't question her attitude there and she toughed it out well. This has been the plan since [Royal] Ascot and I thought this track would be ideal for her. “The [G2] May Hill [at Doncaster] looks the spot for her and, how she has finished there, maybe we should stick to seven [furlongs]. There is the [G2] Rockfel [at Newmarket's Rowley Mile track], but she is also in the [G1] Moyglare [at the Curragh].”

Lakota Sioux is the seventh of eight foals and one of six scorers from as many runners out of G3 Prix Allez France victrix Shemiyla (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}). The March-foaled bay is a half-sister to stakes-winning G1 Sydney Cup runner-up Sheraz (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Blue Point (Ire). Shemiyla, a half-sister to the dam of G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Shakeel (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), is out of Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie winner Shemala (Ire) (Danehill), herself one of four black-type performers produced by G1 Prix de Diane heroine Shemaka (Ire) (Nishapour {Fr}).

Sea The Stars’ Flying Honours A New TDN Rising Star

Charlie Appleby's juveniles are really starting to come to the fore and Flying Honours (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was the latest to shine brightly as he earned TDN Rising Star status with a 9 1/2-length success in Sandown's British Stallion Studs EBF Novice S. on Wednesday. Sent off the 2-5 favourite for the seven-furlong contest won 12 months ago by El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), having finished fourth in the Newmarket July Festival maiden won by TDN Rising Star Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), the son of the G3 Prix Fille de l'Air winner Powder Snow (Dubawi {Ire}) raced behind the leading duo early with James Doyle keen to educate him. Taking time to get to the Hannon runner Starnberg (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) once woken up three out, the Godolphin homebred was in command a furlong later and when shown the whip surged on to a 9 1/2-length success from that rival. There was another 1 1/2-length margin back to the Andrew Balding-trained Grenham Bay (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third.

“His work was nice before Newmarket–he's worked with Highbank and the likes of him and it just shows that a first run can catch them out, as he was left on the wing there,” Doyle said of the winner, who becomes the 16th TDN Rising Star for Sea The Stars. “He's put that behind him today. I was confident he'd stay this stiff seven and he relished it and galloped through the line really well and showed quality there. He was very relaxed and slightly behind the bridle, but he's a chilled character.”

 

The winner is the second foal out of the dam, who started out with Appleby before being transferred to Henri-Alex Pantall and winning the Toulouse feature and a listed contest in Germany. She is a half-sister to Sea Of Snow (Distorted Humor), who was precocious enough to be third in the Listed Woodcote S., and to the G2 Diana-Trial and G3 Grosser Preis der
Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung-placed Snow (Ger) by Sea The Stars' Sea The Moon (Ger).
