Gulfstream Park: Over $5.8 Million Wagered On Rainbow 6 On Mandatory Payout Day

There were multiple winning tickets in Saturday's mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream Park with each ticket worth $17,215.86.

There was a carryover pool of $1,048,970.38 in the Rainbow 6, and $5,831,816 of new money wagered into the pool Saturday.

The sequence started off with a bang when 30-1 longshot Boreas won Gulfstream's seventh race, a maiden special weight event on a mile turf course and returned $62.80.

The jackpot pool is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory payout days the whole pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

There will be a guaranteed pool of $200,000 in Sunday's Rainbow 6, which includes three turf races. The sequence begins with the sixth race, a maiden special event at a mile for 4-year-olds and up. Bold Agenda, a son of Candy Ride from the Todd Pletcher stable, is 9-5 in the morning-line off a third-place finish here Jan. 15 at a mile. Winter Pool, a son of Curlin, debuts for the barn of Chad Brown and is 5-2.

The 10th race, an optional allowance claimer at 1 1/16 mile on the turf, is a wide-open affair with a dozen fillies and mares. The Brown barn sends out Linny Kate, a daughter of Tonalist making her first start in eight months. Brendan Walsh sends out two including Godolphin LLC's Lake Lucerne, making her U.S. debut. The final leg of the sequence is a maiden special weight event for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at 1 1/16 mile. It's another competitive event with debut runners from the barns of Shug McGaughey, Christophe Clement and Brown, and 4-1 favorite Champagne Ivy for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., and A Thing of Beauty for Pletcher.

NOTES: Calumet Farm's Flying Scotsman went gate-to-wire to win Saturday's 10th race, a $53,000 allowance optional claimer. A 5-year-old son of English Channel entering the race off a fifth-place finish in the Tropical Turf (G3), Flying Scotsman and Corey Lanerie covered the mile turf course in 1:32.83 and returned $33.60. Structor, making his first start since winning the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), finished in a dead heat for fourth.

Courtney, Nicoletti Talk Rainbow 6

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 7-12, kicked off by a mile maiden special weight race on turf that drew a full field of 3-year-olds, including Todd Pletcher-trained Golden Whim, a debuting son of Medaglia d'Oro who was a $1.5 million yearling purchase. Well-bred colts trained by Chad Brown, Christophe Clement, Rusty Arnold and Kent Sweezey will also be making their respective debuts in a most challenging Race 7.

Pletcher-trained Black Magic Woman, a dominating 3 ¾-length maiden winner last time out, makes her return in Race 8, a mile optional claiming allowance for older fillies and mares. Dale Romans-trained Funnybet, who finished his 2020 campaign with three straight victories at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, is slated to make her 2021 debut.

Race 9, a mile turf race with a full field of $10,000 claimers, could well be a 'spread' race for many Rainbow 6 bettors.

Chad Brown-trained Structor figures to be tested by a group of battle-tested rivals in Race 10, a mile turf race for older horses. The 4-year-old son of Palace Malice has been idle since winning his third straight race in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Santa Anita.

Multiple graded-stakes winner Mischevious Alex will be a popular “single” in Race 11, the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3), a six-furlong dash for 4-year-olds and up. The Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained son of Into Mischief is coming off an eye-catching optional claiming allowance win off a five-month layoff.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will be closed out with a mile maiden special weight race on turf for 3-year-old maidens in Race 12.  Bill Mott-trained Floriform, a son of Into Mischief who was beaten by just a half-length in his 2021 debut, figures to garner a lot of support from Rainbow 6 bettors in a race that includes several well-connected first-time starters.

The Rainbow 6 will be preceded by the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint (G3) in Race 6. Rusty Arnold-trained Leinster is slated to make his first start since finishing a close third in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1`) at Keeneland. The 6-year-old son of Majestic Warrior had won the Shakertown (G2) and Woodford (G2) in his two prior starts.

WHO'S HOT:  Jose Ortiz rode three winners Friday afternoon. He won aboard Odramark ($5.80) in the first race, Sambacer ($5.80) in the fifth and Romp ($7) in the 10th and closing race.

Gulfstream: Analyst Nicoletti Picks 10 Winners, Rainbow Jackpot Has $1.1 Million Guarantee

Gulfstream's host and analyst Ron Nicoletti picked 10 winners on Saturday's 12-race program at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

Nicoletti started the day by selecting the winners of the first nine races. They were Girl Dad ($6.60), Hard Game ($8), Noble Empire ($3), Bourbon in May ($7.60), Augusta Melody ($3), Great Island ($2.60), Democracy ($15.60), Yodel E.A. Who ($4.60), and R Mercedes Boy ($5.60), Nicoletti scratched into Great Island when his top selection, La Signare, was withdrawn from the Suwannee River (G3) when the race was taken off the turf.

After his selection Bourbon Highway lost his rider in the 10th race, Nicoletti had the 11th race winner in Lady's Island ($4.40) in the Ladies' Turf Sprint. His selection in the last race finished fourth.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $1.1 Million
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1.1 million Sunday.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the ninth straight racing day Saturday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,638,82.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, kicked off by a well-stocked maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Red Hot and Blue, a Shug McGaughey-trained daughter of Candy Ride who cost $650,000 as a yearling, heads a group of well-bred fillies who will make their respective debuts, including daughters of Medaglia d'Oro, Pioneerof the Nile and Quality Road, as well as three daughters of Into Mischief.

Todd Pletcher-trained Jouster, who won by nearly nine lengths in her auspicious turf debut, is the 6-5 morning-line favorite for Race 7, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Kelsey Danner-trained Gladys, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, is entered to make her turf debut.

Race 8, a five-furlong turf sprint for $16,000 claimers, could prove to be a popular 'spread' race with bettors. Chad Brown-trained Precipitate, a Juddmonte Farms' homebred daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, is rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Race 9, a mile maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Born Again, a daughter of Not This Time who finished third in her recent debut; and Bill Mott-trained Obligatory, a daughter of Curlin who finished fourth in her debut after bumping at the start; are also likely to receive strong support from Rainbow 6 bettors.

A 6 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for older horses follows in Race 10. Michael Yates-trained Reservenotattained will seek his third straight victory after winning both of his last two races by 6 ½ lengths. A mile turf race with a full field of $16,000 claimers in Race 11 figures to offer a strong challenge to bettors looking for a 'single' to complete their Rainbow 6 tickets.
