Qatar Standout Noor Al Hawa To Stand In France

Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}–Majestic Roi, by Street Cry {Ire}), champion of his generation in Germany as a 3-year-old and a four-time highweighted older horse in Qatar, will enter stud in 2023 at Haras du Grand Courgeon some 25 kilometres northwest of Angers. He will command a fee of €2,300.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, Noor Al Hawa raced in the early part of his career for Jaber Abdullah and was trained by Andreas Wohler. He came to hand at three in 2016, posting a breakthrough black-type success in the Listed Prix de Tourgeville at Deauville and added a pair of German Group 3 tests before being acquired by the Qatar-based Al Wasmiyah Stud.

A three-length winner of the US$500,000 Qatar Derby (Listed), the chestnut was runner-up in the Listed H.H. The Emir's Trophy the following February and again in 2018 before winning the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy for trainer Elias Mikhalides that summer.

Permanently relocated to Doha in late 2018 and transferred to Georges Mikhalides, Noor Al Hawa went on to win 10 of 17 starts, including the 2021 Amir Trophy at his fifth attempt (video). His final racetrack appearance was a gallant fourth in defence of his Amir Trophy crown last February and he heads to the breeding barn with a career record of 18-6-5 from 37 starts for prize money of US$2,755,942.

“He's a remarkably tough horse, who has traveled extensively while performing over every surface and a large variety of distances,” renowned Qatar trainer Alban de Mieulle told Jour de Galop. “He's also a beautiful horse, very correct, with a great personality and I think that he will be a success as far as a sire of jumpers, for example. His owner is going to support him with flat mares.”

A half-brother to German stakes winner Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), Noor Al Hawa is out of Majestic Roi, who carried Abdullah's silks to a 16-1 upset in the 2007 G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket after causing a 25-1 boilover in that year's G3 Fred Darling S. She was also second in that year's G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly. The listed-winning second dam L'Extra Honor (Hero's Honor) was also responsible for G3 Arc Trial hero Black Spirit (Black Minnaloushe). Noor Al Hawa's deeper female family includes the outstanding Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (Danehill).

Group 1-Winning Trainer Mick Channon To Retire

Mick Channon, who began training in 1989, will retire at the end of 2022, he announced on Saturday. The former football player will give his training operation to his son Jack. Now 73, Channon has saddled over 2,500 winners on the Flat in Britain, and his Group 1 winners include Piccolo (GB) (Warning {GB}), Zafeen (Fr) (Zafonic), Tobougg (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) and Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge).

Channon said, “The licence will be handed over to Jack as from the start of next year. It's been a great way of life for over 30 years and I can't thank everyone that has helped us enough. I couldn't have got there without them.

“I started with 10 horses in Lambourn where we had a great time, and Jack was born there. We had some good horses and good people work for us.

“When I came in I was a footballer entering the big horrible world of horse racing, but we thought if we bought some sharp 2-year-olds we would have a chance of making it. Everyone does that now, but we had Gill Richardson who was a great judge at the sales and bought us a lot of nice horses. I have to thank her and Gill Hedley, who still runs the show, and also Peter Tain and Patrick Trant.

“We bought a lot of cheap horses for Jaber Abdullah such as Queen's Logic, Flashy Wings (GB) (Zafonic) and Music Show (Ire) (Noverre), as well as Zafeen who was second in the [G1 2000] Guineas and won the [G1] St James's Palace S. Jaber was brilliant.”

Channon also came very close to taking the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe three times with the luckless Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) (2007-2009).

“Youmzain was a very good older horses who according to French rules should have been awarded his first Arc in the race won by Dylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill),” Channon reflected. “It was the only time over there I didn't see a result turned around for the interference that occurred. But he went on to win the [G1] Grand Prix de Paris and finish second in three Arcs on the bounce.”

He added, “I wish Jack well, he's ably assisted me for seven seasons and the time is right for him to take over. But I will still be around, helping on the breeding side and not in the wilderness.”

Jack Channon said, “Dad will be more integral than ever and the most important part of my team. He will still do what he enjoys most and if anything he will enjoy it more.

“I spent a year with Graham Motion in the States and another with John O'Shea in Australia. And time with Clive Brittain.

“The plan is to start with around 60 [head]. Certain Lad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) is a very decent older horse and there will be the Lincoln and Cambridgeshire winners Johan (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Majestic (Ire) (Conduit {Ire}) as well as some very nice 3-year-olds like Rathgar (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), Moush (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) and today's runner Caernarfon (GB) (Cityscape {GB}).

“All the owners have been sensational standing by dad and me and I'm blessed to have all their continued support to make training a success. I'm extremely lucky to start in a place like West Ilsley which has so much heritage, notwithstanding the best gallops in the world.”

Dance In The Grass A Stakes First For Cracksman

Jaber Abdullah's Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}–Dance The Dream {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) became the fifth winner for her freshman sire (by Frankel {GB}) when snagging her June 10 debut, going seven furlongs at Sandown in her only prior start, and registered a first stakes win for the Dalham Hall Stud resident in Thursday's Listed European Bloodstock News EBF Star S. over the same course and distance. The eventual winner was squeezed for room during the initial exchanges and raced off the pace towards the rear through the early fractions. Making headway out wide in the straight, she was shaken up to go second soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on in determined fashion to deny Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line, with the duo pulling six lengths clear of the remainder.

“It was Plan Z as she missed the break and was a lot further back than intended, but I was impressed as she had to make a lot of ground up,” said Charlie Johnston. “Because she made such a big effort I thought she was going to pay for that in the last 150 yards, but she managed to find even more so it was impressive. She's by Cracksman so you wouldn't expect her to be doing this already and, even though it's a small sample size, the Cracksmans are making an impression. We've got three, two have won and the other will be out soon. She's in the [G2] Debutante and [G1] Moyglare in Ireland and I suspect her next run will either be the Moyglare or the [G2] May Hill at Doncaster. Those look the two best options for her. They are in September which is a far way away, but if anything you'd think she would improve for going [up to] a mile.”

Dance In The Grass, half-sister to a yearling colt by Ulysses (Ire) and a weanling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB), is the first of three foals produced by Listed Daisy Warwick S. third Dance The Dream (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), herself a half-sister to G3 Dee S. placegetter Rasmy (GB) (Red Ransom) out of stakes-winning G1 Vodafone Oaks third Shadow Dancing (GB) (Unfuwain). Shadow Dancing is a daughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks victrix and G2 Park Hill S. runner-up Salchow (GB) (Niniski), herself a half-sister to G3 Chester Vase-winning sire Gulland (GB) (Unfuwain).

Lope De Vega’s Alia’s Rose Snags TDN Rising Star Tag At Chantilly

Jaber Abullah's Alia's Rose (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Quanzhou {Fr}, by Dubawi {Ire}) was let go as a 33-5 chance for Sunday's Prix de la Butte Blanche, a maiden for unraced fillies, at Chantilly and returned to the winner's circle with a 'TDN Rising Star' tag after producing a breathtaking display from off the pace in the seven-furlong test. Racing at the tail of the field through halfway, she made smooth headway on the bridle out wide in the straight before quickening impressively for control approaching the final furlong and powered clear in style to easily outclass Karmina Bella (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) by six lengths.
