Wind Of Change Gives J.C. Diaz Jr. First Stateside Stakes Win In Mr. Prospector

Ever since Saffie Joseph Jr. took over the training for Wind of Change two starts ago he was convinced the 6-year-old was better sprinting six furlongs than going longer, as the horse had been doing.

Saturday's $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., validated that belief.

Wind of Change, with jockey J. C. Diaz Jr. making his Monmouth Park debut, splashed to an easy 6¼-length victory in the 16th running of the Mr. Prospector Stakes, covering the six furlongs over a sloppy track in a sharp 1:09.60.

It marked the first stakes victory in the United States for Wind of Change, who started his career in Brazil.

“It looked like he made the lead within a few jumps and once he made the lead I wasn't worried because he's not the fastest horse from the gate,” said Joseph. “So I felt pretty comfortable once he made the lead. By the quarter pole he had a little pressure but he's the kind of horse that is going to stay the six furlongs strongly. I felt he would finish strongly and he did.”

A winner of eight of 21 career starts, Wind of Change has seven wins and two seconds in 10 starts over wet tracks – numbers that gave Diaz some pre-race confidence. The 20-year-old native of Puerto Rico is the son of legendary Puerto Rican jockey Juan C. Diaz, who has captured the past 20 riding titles at Camarero Racetrack.

“I wasn't too worried about the sloppy track because I know this horse is good in the slop,” Diaz said. “That gives you confidence when you see that form. He (Joseph) told me the horse has some early speed but he isn't always quick away from the gate. But he got into stride easily and made the lead on his own. He stayed strong the whole race.”

Sent off at 2-1 in the field of six, Wind of Change had few anxious moments, tripping the timer at :22.34 for the opening quarter and :45.14 to the half. Jersey-bred Golden Brown rallied for second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Always Sunshine.

Joseph tried Wind of Change at six furlongs for his first start in his care, with the second-place finish in an optional $62,000 claimer at Gulfstream Park on April 24 serving as more proof that the distance was more the horse's strength. He was beaten just three-quarters of a length that day – and had been 0-for-4 at six furlongs until this victory.

The off going proved to be an added advantage for a horse that relishes a wet track.

“You always want a fast track but if a horse can handle an off track the way this one does you don't worry about it as much,” said Joseph, who is stabled at Monmouth Park for the first time. “I'm just thankful the horse showed up. He has been training like a really good horse. He's a deserving stakes winner.

“We're off to a good start at Monmouth. Fingers crossed it will continue.”

Diaz Makes Winning Return To Gulfstream Park; Rainbow 6 Jackpot Has $400,000 Guarantee On Sunday

Juan Carlos Diaz Jr., the son of a Puerto Rican legend, made a return to the Gulfstream Park winner's circle Saturday, more than two years after a brief stopover on his way to Southern California during his apprentice year.

The 20-year-old son of Juan Carlos Diaz rode Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Uncork the Bottle ($15.60) to a deep-closing victory in Race 3 aboard his second mount since his return to Gulfstream for the Spring/Summer Meet. Diaz rode Joseph-trained Braver Than We Are for a victory on March 10, 2019, during a 13-race stint at Gulfstream before riding out his apprenticeship in Southern California.

“I thank Saffie Joseph Jr. He has always supported me,” said Diaz of the Gulfstream Park-based trainer who notched stakes victories Saturday at Aqueduct with Mischevious Alex in Carter (G1) and Drain the Clock in the Bay Shore (G3).

Diaz rode a majority of his 79 career victories during his apprenticeship in Southern California before returning to Puerto Rico for the past few months to ride alongside his father, who has ridden 5,298 winners.

“I liked California. I did good there, but with COVID-19, I went home and rode there for two months. Now, I'm here,” Diaz said. “My father has helped me a lot. He told me to go to Miami.”

Romero Maragh, who notched his first career win at Gulfstream March 29, 2018, before eventually making his way to New York, also got reacquainted with the Gulfstream winner's circle Saturday on his second day of action during the Sprint/Summer Meet. Maragh guided Cuy ($10.20) to victory in Race 1.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $400,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $400,000 for Sunday's program at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Saturday for the fourth racing day in a row since last Saturday's mandatory payout. Tickets with all six winners were each worth $29,537.72.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10 on the Easter Sunday program that will get underway at 1 p.m.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover into the first race Sunday of $2,471.10.

Jockey J.C. Diaz Jr. Tests Positive For Coronavirus; Will Miss Part Of Del Mar Meet

Jockey Jean (J.C.) Diaz, Jr. has tested positive for the coronavirus but is asymptomatic and began self isolation at his Los Angeles area apartment Friday.

As part of Del Mar's protocols and procedures for dealing with the pandemic, all jockeys' room riders and personnel were tested in San Diego this week on either Wednesday or Thursday at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. Before he came on site at Del Mar, Diaz was notified Friday morning that his test of a day earlier had been positive for the virus.

If Diaz remains asymptomatic – that is showing no signs of the virus – by the end of the isolation period, he could return to riding on Friday, November 13. Diaz, a 20-year-old native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will miss the first two weekends of the Bing Crosby meeting.

“I take my hat off to Del Mar and all the people involved,” said Tony Matos, Diaz's agent. Matos has been booking mounts for riders since 1966 and lists Hall of Famers Angel Cordero and Laffit Pincay, Jr. among his former clients.

“Just like at Santa Anita, Del Mar is doing a great job with testing and procedures,” Matos said.  “We all want to follow the rules and do whatever we can to keep everyone as safe as possible.”
