Longshot Get Smokin Wires Kentucky Turf Cup

When they throw $1.7 million at a race that entitles the winner to a guaranteed, fees-paid berth in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, sometimes you cast all logic aside and roll the dice against all odds.

As the saying goes, 'you miss 100% of the shots you don't take,' and it was with that mindset that Get Smokin (Get Stormy)–a Grade II and Grade III winner, but unproven over the 12-furlong trip of the GII FanDuel Kentucky Cup Turf–was even entered in the first place. But given a perfect ride from the front by Fernando de la Cruz on a day the rail was where you wanted to be at Kentucky Downs, the chestnut, off at 19-1, forgot to stop and proved 1 3/4 lengths superior over Spooky Channel (English Channel) when all was said and done. Santin (Medaglia d'Oro) raced prominently throughout and settled for third.

“I have often told [Ironhorse Racing Managing Partner] Harlan [Malter] that he is the craziest owner I train for. But this was not a crazy idea,” winning trainer Mark Casse said in the immediate aftermath of the upset.

The hard-fought winner of a Gulfstream allowance first off a September layoff back in April, Get Smokin was sixth in a graded-stakes quality renewal of the Opening Verse S. at Churchill May 4, then was run down late and finished runner-up in the GIII Arlington S. June 3 and in the July 1 Wise Dan S. at Ellis. Tried over 10 furlongs for the first time in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup Aug. 6, Get Smokin made the running, but was reeled in late and settled for fourth.

Though he had a bit of early company in the form of Santin in the final event of Saturday's stakes-laden program, Get Smokin took the field into the first turn and opened up four or five lengths on his rivals as they hit the backstretch. Despite the loose lead, Get Smokin switched off beautifully on the engine, getting the half in :49.61 and the opening six panels in a comfortable 1:14.18.

Even though the next couple of furlongs were covered in a testing :23.81, Get Smokin was still full of run down the side of the track, daring some proven stayers to come and get him. But catch him they could not, as he switched his leads at the quarter pole, flopped back and forth in the final furlong, but remained clear to the wire.

Malter was full of praise for de la Cruz, who won back-to-back runnings of the GII Woodford S. aboard Ironhorse's Bucchero (Kantharos) before also partnering with the horse in consecutive renewals of the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

“We looked at this race,” Malter said. “We wanted to test out at Ellis [in the 1 1/4-mile prep]. Even though we ran fourth, we were happy. He ran a similar figure to what he was running at a mile and a sixteenth. We were all systems go. We kind of came up with the idea to have Fernando. We made a very specific plan, and it's amazing how well Fernando executed it.”

By Get Stormy, winner of the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at nine furlongs on the turf, Get Smokin is out of a mare by noted sprint sire Smoke Glacken. There is a bit of stamina as you go down the page, as second dam Doc's Leading Lady–the dam of MSW Spanish Pipedream (Scat Daddy)–was a full-sister to Phi Beta Doc, who set a Saratoga course record when winning the 1999 GIII Saranac S. over a mile and three-sixteenths before annexing that year's 10-furlong Virginia Derby, also in course-record time. Third dam Smart Queen was a half-sister to 1977 GII Arkansas Derby hero Clev Er Tell (Tell).

Hookah Lady is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Vino Rosso who was a $32,000 RNA as a KEENOV weanling, then sold for $35,000 at KEESEP last fall before blossoming into a $550,000 OBS March breezer. Smoldering Ash, a yearling full-sister to Get Smokin, went for $102,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale to NBS Stable's John Ballantyne, coincidentally the owner of Turf Cup runner-up Spooky Channel. The mare produced a Classic Empire colt this year and was bred back to Practical Joke.

Bucchero Represented By First SW In Blue Sparkler

Sent off at overlaid odds of 13-1 from a 5-1 morning line, Ironhorse Racing Stable's Beauty of the Sea (Bucchero) was given a perfect ride by Jairo Rendon and held off My Sweet Affair (Twirling Candy) and Love Appeals (Speightstown)–each scratched out of Friday's rained-off Coronation Cup S.–to become the first black-type winner for her Florida-based stallion, also campaigned by Ironhorse.

Nicely drawn in gate two, the Florida-bred broke with them, but eased back to sit just behind a strong pace set by Coronation Cup entrant Bosserati (Holy Boss) with two-time course-and-distance winner Lady Irvine (Accelerate) not far behind. Committed to an inside run around the turn, Beauty of the Sea came after and collared Bosserati in upper stretch, but was confronted either side by My Sweet Affair at the fence and Love Appeals one path to her outside. Any of the three had claims at the sixteenth pole, but Beauty of the Sea fought on bravely from between the two market leaders and was home narrowly best.

 

Unplaced in a single juvenile appearance over the Gulfstream main track, Beauty of the Sea was runner-up in a five-furlong turf maiden in Hallandale Apr. 7 and donned cap and gown over that same track and trip May 5. No better than a 4-1 chance in her first start against winners over the Gulfstream synthetic June 3, she gamely split horses late and went on to punch her ticket to stakes company with a two-length success.

“We sent her here with this race in mind,” said winning trainer Joe Orseno. “She handled the turf so well so we figured let's keep her on the turf and see where we can go with it. “Jairo never panicked. I thought she would be laying right off the leaders. But he sat back there and when she moved up I saw she was running. It was just a question of the heavyweights coming at her. They were coming too, but we held them off.”

Harlan Malter, managing partner of Ironhorse Racing, made the trip in from California and will be on hand Sunday at Woodbine, where Bucchero's son Mattingly is a live chance in Sunday's Victoria S.

“I always referred to her as my mini-Bucchero,” Malter said. “To win the first stakes for him that sort of way is everything I thought of what Bucchero could be as a stallion. It means an enormous amount to me and my partners and we think that this filly is the first of many stakes winners to come for Bucchero.”

One of 36 winners from 58 starters for Bucchero, Beauty of the Sea, a $29,000 OBS June buyback last year, hails from the female family of the nails-tough Second of June (Louis Quatorze), Grade I winner Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) and GSW Bohemian Lady (Carson City). The unraced Belong to Sea, the only daughter of Poseidon's Warrior to have a foal of racing age, is also the dam of the 2-year-old colt Little Starships (Gone Astray). Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Program Promoting 2021 Ownership Opportunities

As temperatures start to rise in Minnesota, so does the excitement for the 2021 racing season at Canterbury Park. The Midwestern track, which opens on May 18, has a multitude of exciting opportunities for trainers, horses, and now future owners. Thanks in part to the relationships built with multiple ownership groups, both national and local, horse racing fans will have easy entry to the exciting experience of being a thoroughbred racehorse owner.

The Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Program (MNREP) is promoting several ownership opportunities on their website, www.RacehorseMinnesota.com, that will provide easy and affordable entry to Thoroughbred racehorse ownership in 2021.

One of these opportunities is provided by the 2021 Canterbury Park Racing Club. The Canterbury Racing Club, which was the first racing club introduced in the United States, has partnered with Wasabi Ventures Stables in 2021 to provide more horsepower via this one-of-a-kind club. Interested parties can experience owning a stable of racehorses at Canterbury Park for an all-inclusive one-time membership fee of $250. Membership offers several additional benefits at the track including free season's pass, special events, and educational opportunities.

“The Canterbury Racing Club is a great way to introduce racehorse ownership to someone who wants to experience the thrill of racehorse ownership, learn more about ownership in general, and who enjoys the sociability of being part of a group of racing fans,” explains Joe Scurto, Executive Director for MNREP.

Empire Racing Stables returns to Canterbury after finishing 2019 as the Leading Owner of the Meet. The club looks to utilize the knowledge of three high percentage winning Canterbury Park trainers: Robertino Diordoro, Bernell Rhone and Karl Broberg. The group races across the country and prides itself on organized gatherings for fun time with owners to get to know one another and enjoy the horses. Ownership opportunities start at $100.

Rocket Wrench Racing offers opportunity for new owners to enjoy the claiming game by claiming horses for their partnership while working alongside their trainer Karl Broberg. The group is made mostly of fellow Minnesotans who enjoy getting together at the track to watch their horses and support their home state's track. 5% ownership opportunities sell for $2,500.

“We look to claim horses with a proven record of success and then enter those horses in races where they can be competitive, and win,” says Rocket Wrench Racing Manager Justin Revak.

Ironhorse Racing Stable heads north for the first time, bringing their passion for success and for the horse to Canterbury Park in 2021. The group, known for campaigning multiple stakes-winning champion Bucchero and Breeders' Cup entrant Momos, is looking to start a 2-year-old at Canterbury Park for owners located in or around Minnesota, then continue racing the horse nationally, should he be successful.

“We are a no mark-up group that doesn't have management fees, but we also know how to win,” says Ironhorse Racing Stable Managing Partner Harlan Malter. “We value our partners because they're not just investors, they really are owners of the horse.”

Wasabi Ventures Stables will also offer their ever expanding ownership opportunities, aside from the Canterbury Racing Club and will be racing for the second year at Canterbury Park. Alongside trainer Tony Rengstorf, Wasabi owned horses hit the board in five out of six starts in 2020 and they look to improve on that record in 2021. Ownership with Wasabi can range from as little as a half percent to as much as 4.99 percent. Most investments start at under $200.

A recent addition to the menu of managed groups racing their horses at Canterbury this year is Grevelis Racing Stable. The longtime local group is woven into the very fabric of racing at Canterbury. Managed by Ted and Heather Grevelis, the group offers larger percentage ownership opportunities, as well as a track record of success at Canterbury dating back to 2005. Ten perecent ownership shares are listed at $2,000.
