Goffs November Foal Topper One Of The Highlights Of Orby Book 1 Catalogue

A strong catalogue of 543 yearlings, featuring a Kingman (GB) half-brother to Group 1 winner Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy), will go under the hammer during Book 1 of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale on Sept. 26-27.

The €550,000 foal, who counts GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. heroine Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) in his immediate family, will be offered as lot 313 by Stauffenberg Bloodstock. They will also offer a Masar (Ire) half-sister to G1 Deutsches Derby hero Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) as lot 373.

There are also a bevy of other siblings and half-siblings to Group 1 winners and Classic winners. Lot 48 is a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) offered by Tinnakill House Stud. That stallion is also responsible for a half-brother to G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero and sire Phoenix Of Spain (Ire) as lot 488; and a full-sister to top-level winner Shraaoh (Ire) is lot 434.

Kingman is the sire of lot 504, a half-brother to G1 2000 Guineas hero and sire Saxon Warrior (Jpn). There are also half-brothers to 2000 Guineas victor Poetic Flare (Ire)–by Camelot (GB) as lot 500–and a No Nay Never son of Many Colours (GB) (Green Desert), who is a half-brother to G1 1000 Guineas victress Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 498). The catalogue also boasts a full-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) (lot 356). The late, great Galileo (Ire) is represented by a pair of yearlings from his final crop in lot 269, a full-brother to Group 2 winner Delphi (Ire); and a colt out of Group 3 winner Wind Chimes (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) is lot 179.

Lot 37 is a Night Of Thunder (Ire) half-sister to juvenile Group 1 winner and sire Lucky Vega (Ire); while lot 227 is a Wootton Bassett (GB) half-sister to G1 Prix Royal-Oak scorer Technician (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). There is also a Mehmas (Ire) colt who is a half-brother to Grade I winner Glorious Empire (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) as lot 409; and a Mehmas half-brother to G2 Coventry S. winner River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 150).

The sale also features yearlings by stallions like Frankel (GB), Dubawi (Ire), Dark Angel (Ire), Kodiac (GB), Churchill (Ire), Lope De Vega (Ire), and Siyouni (Fr), among others.

Following Book 1, Goffs will host the Orby Book 2 Sale, formerly the Sportsman's Sale, from Sept. 28-29. All yearlings offered over the four days will be eligible for the new Goffs Two Million Series which offers a guaranteed minimum prize fund of €2 million exclusive to buyers at Goffs. The Two Million Series consists of Europe's Richest Two-Year-Old Race, the seven-furlong €1-million Goffs Million, on the eve of the 2024 sale at the Curragh and the €500,000 Goffs 500 over six furlongs, with prize-money available through 10th place. In addition, the Goffs €50,000 Bonus Series will see €50,000 bonuses paid to the winners of a diverse range of 2-year-old maidens on Irish racecourses throughout 2024.

Sioux Nation Filly Popular At Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale

The two-day Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale concluded on Thursday with a filly by Sioux Nation heading the final session at €72,000.

Consigned by Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud, lot 663 is a granddaughter of the G3 Prix du Bois winner Ela Merici (Fr) (Beaudelaire {Fr}) and was bought by the father-and-son team of Con and Neil Sands of Bronson Racing. The filly will be trained by Joseph O'Brien, who currently trains Bronson Racing's 92-rated winning juvenile Goa Gajah (Bay A Bali {Brz}).

A Mehmas (Ire) colt (lot 481) and a filly by his sire Acclamation (GB) (lot 609) each made €70,000. Oghill House Stud consigned the former, who caught the eye of Bobby O'Ryan. His great granddam was Dead Certain (GB) (Absolom {GB}), the winner of the 1989 G1 Cheveley Park S.

Lot 609, out of a Smart Strike half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Hootenanny (Quality Road), was purchased by Jack Davison Racing from the Rathbarry Stud draft.

Thursday's trade resulted in 199 sold (76%) from 263 offered for a gross of €1,863,000. The average was €9,362 (-30%) and the median was €5,500 (-45%). Overall, 394 yearlings (77%) sold from 512 offered for a gross of €3,705,400. The average was €9,405 (-33%) and the median dropped to €5,500 (-39%), but it should be noted that the 2021 edition of the sale included a dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the death of Shadwell's Sheikh Hamdan.

BBA Ireland was the leading buyer by gross over the two-day stand just like last year, and purchased 24 head for €264,300. Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud edged out David Cox's Baroda Stud for leading consignor, with 18 sold for €290,500 versus 26 sold for €236,500.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “You're only as good as your last sale” is an oft used adage when analysing bloodstock sales and we are all guilty of only measuring against the immediate predecessor.

“Twelve months ago the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale benefited from a large dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the sad passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum who was such a valued and revered supporter of Goffs. That draft accounted for a quarter of the turnover with eight of the top 10 prices and propelled the sale to record breaking levels headed by a top price of €180,000.

“Those lofty heights were always going to be out of reach and so it is that the statistics from the last two days are well behind 2021. However we are far from despondent when reviewing this year's renewal as it has finished ahead of every other incarnation of the Open/Autumn Yearling Sale since its inception in 2010 with a second-best turnover, average and median flowing from a reasonable clearance rate of 77%. Whilst some of these figures do not necessarily point to massive returns for breeders, they do demonstrate a vibrancy to the proceedings and those that appealed most had plenty of admirers.

“Demand over the two days has been driven by a truly international buying bench with a flood of overseas buyers headed by a large group from Italy who accounted for nigh on 100 yearlings and another strong contingent from Eastern Europe who bought over 50 with a further 20 plus heading for China. There were also significant parties from Scandinavia, Germany, the Gulf Region, Libya, USA and France taking on spirited bidders from the UK and Ireland. All of these international visitors were attracted to Kildare Paddocks by the reputation of Irish breeders and their world class bloodlines which allow our passionate Purchaser Attraction Team, working in tandem with our network of international agents and the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, to trumpet their attributes on the global stage. How lucky we are to have the assistance of the latter group as they provide an invaluable and unique service to those who choose to sell here whilst the superb IRE Incentive is a real plus for sellers in Ireland.

“As the sale closes we can reflect on vibrant, strong and positive renewals of all three parts of the Irish National Yearling Sale, each of which graphically makes our case that Irish breeders can sell, and sell extremely well, to the world at Goffs as highlighted by the Orby sale topper of €2.6M which proved to be the world's top-priced yearling filly of 2022 and a high of €300,000 at Sportsman's, the highest priced yearling ever sold in Ireland outside the Orby Sale.”

Goffs Million Attracts 24 For Its First Edition, As Purse Rises To €1.234M

The first edition of the Goffs Million has drawn 24 horses to the Curragh for the seven-furlong race on Saturday, Sept. 24. Now worth €1.234 million, up from the original purse of €1 million, the race consists of 12 Irish-trained entries and a like number of British-trained entries, and is open exclusively to Goffs Orby Yearling Sale alumni. The Goffs Million is part of the Curragh's two-day Autumn Festival of Racing alongside the G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Blandford S. on day one.

Remaining in the field after the final forfeit stage are the listed winners Hellsing (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Beauty Crescent (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), as well as the maiden winner Hiawatha (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), a full-brother to dual Group 1 winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). Queen Olly (Ire) (No Nay Never), third in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S., is also signed on, as is fellow Amo Racing colourbearer Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Wahaaj (Ire) (Gregorian {Ire}), second in the G3 Solario S. and Oviedo (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), third in the G3 Acomb S., will also take part.

Four Yearlings By Top Sires Supplemented To Goffs Orby Sale Including A Galileo Filly

Four yearlings–by Galileo (Ire), Sea The Stars (Ire), Dark Angel (Ire), and Camelot (GB)–have been supplemented to the upcoming Goffs Orby Yearling Sale on Sept. 27-28.

From Baroda Stud is lot 229A, a filly by the late, great Galileo (Ire). She is a daughter of Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Wind Chimes (GB) (Mastercraftsman {GB}).

A filly by Sea The Stars and out of Aegean Girl (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) (lot 315A) also hails from the draft of Baroda Stud. Aegean Girl is a half-sister to G3 Bengough S. hero Lightning Moon (Ire) (Shamardal) and listed winner Song Of My Heart (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

The only colt among the supplementary lots is Yeomanstown Stud's lot 508A. By their resident star stallion Dark Angel (Ire), the grey's dam is the listed winner Isaan Queen (Ire) (War Command), while G3 Prix du Calvados victress Charlotte O Fraise (Ire) (Beat Hollow {GB}) is in the extended family.

Lot 174A, a Camelot filly out of an unraced half-sister to G3 Winter Derby hero Robin Hoods Bay (GB) (Motivator {GB}) rounds out the quartet. She is offered by Camas Park Stud and counts G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse) as her third dam.

The Orby Sale begins at 9:30 a.m. each day, with all yearlings offered eligible for the 2023 Goffs Million.
