Michael O’Hagan Launches New Business

Michael O'Hagan, the former CEO of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (ITM), announced on Monday the launch of his own business, MOH Consultancy.

Following a long career in the racing and bloodstock industries spanning various different roles–latterly spending nine and a half years as international advisor and representative to the Dubai-based Al Basti Equiworld–O'Hagan is now embarking on a new venture which will see him offer his experience and expertise to not only the thoroughbred industry worldwide, but also the wider business community.

O'Hagan said, “In the unique positions I have held over the years, I feel that I am fortunate to have accrued the experience required to tackle the constant global challenges facing the racing and other industries.

“I am excited with the launch of MOH Consultancy and look forward to taking on new projects with new people while drawing on past experiences with a solid base of friends, family and established industry professionals.”

O'Hagan started his professional career with stints working in France and America before taking up a position as assistant manager at Coolmore Stud in Ireland. He went on to become CEO of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA) and later took on the role which saw him head up ITM.

ITBA Breeding Seminar Plays Host to Industry Experts at Goffs

Over 200 people attended a breeding seminar held by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA) and its junior wing, the ITBA Next Generation, on the eve of the Goffs February Sale on Tuesday, February 6.

The event was hosted by Kevin Blake, a well-known racing analyst and broadcaster as well as being a reputable breeder in his own right. He was joined on the panel by former ITBA chairman Dermot Cantillon, the breeder of multiple Group 1 winners at Tinnakill House Stud, plus Irish National Stud CEO Cathal Beale, Helena Burns of Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital and Loughtown Stud, bloodstock agent Matt Coleman and Barry Mahon, Juddmonte's general manager in Ireland and European racing.

A variety of themes were up for discussion as the panel talked all things breeding, from what they look for when buying a mare to the general health of the industry and where it might be years from now.

A recording of the event will be available through the ITBA in the coming weeks. The ITBA will also soon be launching their 'Ask The Expert' series which will take place online during March, April and May, providing the opportunity to hear from different figures in the industry on a wide range of topics.

ITBA Hosts Breeding Season Workshop

The Breeding Season Preparation Workshop, which was attended by over 150, was held by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA) this week. The event brought together a panel of industry experts that addressed relevant issues with the aim in making the coming season as successful as possible.

Topics included, 'Postnatal Care' by Andrea Ryan, Veterinary Surgeon with Kilcash Equine Clinic; and 'Assisting During Foaling' by Olive O'Connor, consignor and breeder. Attendees also heard from Lorraine Fradl, Connolly's Red Mills, on 'Nutrition for Mares & Foals.' Finally, Micheal Orlandi of Starfield Stud and Compas Equine, delved into the 'Mating Plans & Stallion Selection.'

Hannah Marks, ITBA Education Coordinator said, “A massive thank you to all the speakers for giving us their time and very informative presentations. It was great to welcome so many attendees back to the ITBA and be able to hold a hybrid event online. We will produce a Follow-on-Guide with all the details from the presentations in the coming days, and we hope to see you at future ITBA events.”

ITBA Hosts Climate Action Webinar

A webinar entitled “Focus on CLIMATE ACTION” will be held from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Friday, June 25, offered by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA). The panel of experts in climate change assembled includes; John Geraghty, Agri Consultant, Jim McAdam, Honorary Professor, Queen's University Belfast, John McSweeney, Prof Geography at NUI Maynooth and David O'Connell, founder of OCAE Consultants.

“In addition to assembling an eminent panel of speakers, I am delighted to announce we have secured Senator Pippa Hackett, Minister of State for Agriculture, with responsibility for Land Use and Biodiversity, who will open the webinar with an key note address,” said ITBA CEO Shane O'Dwyer. “A thoroughbred breeder herself, Senator Hackett acknowledges ITBA is fully committed to supporting the Government's landmark Climate Bill of putting Ireland on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050. As thoroughbred production is low-intensity farming, Irish breeders are well placed to play their part in terms of stud farm sustainability, which in turn can feed into Ireland's Green Agenda.”

The webinar will cover key climate challenges including; Agroforestry, Biodiversity, Climate Change Cause & Effect, Grassland & Pasture Management, Management Adaptations for Climate Change and Soil & Mineral Management. Chaired by Cathal Beale, CEO of the Irish National Stud, it will also include a Q&A Session with members of the panel.
