Twilight Gleaming A Stakes First For National Defense at Deauville

Stonestreet Stables LLC's 2-year-old filly Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) gained recompense for a defeat in Royal Ascot's G2 Queen Mary S. with a first black-type success in Saturday's Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge at Deauville, becoming the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Twilight Gleaming bettered an Apr. 8 debut second over 4 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in a May 9 maiden special weight when upped to five furlongs at Belmont and went postward for this retrieval mission coming back off a runner-up finish in the June 16 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. In command throughout this straight dash, the 7-10 favourite was shaken up with 350 metres remaining and ridden out inside the final furlong to withstand the late threat of G3 Princess Margaret S. third Delmona by a neck for a first black-type triumph.

Twilight Gleaming becomes the first black-type scorer for her freshman sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and for her dam Thames Pageant (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Thames Pageant, who has a yearling colt by Sioux Nation to come, is a full-sister to G1 Winx S. second  Mainstream (GB) out of Listed Eternal S. and Listed October S. winner Golden Stream (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Golden Stream, who also threw this year's Listed Chesham S. runner-up Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), is the leading performer out of MGSW G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Phantom Gold (GB) (Machiavellian), herself a full-sister to G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Flight of Fancy (GB). Invincible Spirit’s Babylone Takes The Malleret

Already the leading trainer in the G2 Prix de Malleret with nine wins, Andre Fabre made it a perfect 10 on Wednesday as Haras Voltaire's Babylone (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) scored at ParisLongchamp. Held up on the rail racing worse than mid-division by Mickael Barzalona throughout the early stages, the 9-1 shot who had beaten a subsequent winner in a 10-furlong conditions event here June 10 was extricated from a pocket passing the two-furlong pole. In front a furlong later, the bay held the strong challenge of Adhafera (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to score by a neck. “She won very well last time where she showed that she needed a mile and a half and she is coming around at the right time,” the owners' racing manager Laurent Benoit said. “She kicked very nicely at the finish and we'll see how she comes out of this. I don't know where she will run again, Andre Fabre will decide but it could be that the [Sept. 12 G1 Prix] Vermeille is a target for the autumn.”

Babylone, who had beaten the subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Kennella (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) when breaking her maiden over seven furlongs at Chantilly in September and who had been second on her seasonal bow over 10 furlongs back at that venue May 17 prior to her success here last month, is out of a daughter of the Niarchos Family's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Denebola (Storm Cat). Also runner-up in the G1 Prix de la Foret, she is in turn the second dam of the G1 Prix de Diane winner Senga (Blame) and Pista (American Pharoah) who captured the G2 Park Hill S. and was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Royallieu. The third dam is the celebrated Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector), winner of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Prix de la Salamandre whose descendants include Bago (Fr) (Nashwan), Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) and the four-times grade I heroine Emollient (Empire Maker). The dam Typique (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bought for €450,000 at the 2016 Goffs November Mares Sale, also has the unraced 2-year-old filly Assyrian Queen (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire).

INS Celebrates Class of 2021

The Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Course, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, enjoyed a more low-key event than usual Friday, June 25 to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2021. Heading this season's award winners, Jake Scott Campbell, Co. Kildare received the Gold Medal, which is presented to someone who has demonstrated an outstanding performance in all aspects of the course. The Silver Medal being awarded to Lachlan Pethica from Australia.

The INS 'Jonathan Fitzpatrick Internship' was awarded to Benjamin Shoare from West Sussex, England, who will commence his internship with the INS in July. Alexis Navet, France, who was the recipient of the Irish Field “Blue Hen” Award, was presented with a cheque for €250 and a trophy by Leo Powell for his winning article on Blue Hen broodmares, which will be published in The Irish Field. The Veterinary Exam award was presented to Sarah Kelly, Kildare, and the CEO award for the highest score in the Equine Business exam went to Conor Mahon, Co. Kilkenny. Best Portfolio of Assignments went to Benjamin Shoare and the Continuous Assessment award was presented to Niamh Walsh, Kilrossanty, Co. Waterford.

Presented annually by the Class of 84, the John Durkan Scholarship went to Grace Kerr (Class of 2020), who will take her placement with former course graduate, horse trainer Brian Meehan. The award is granted to a student who has shown an interest in pursuing a career in training racehorses.

Former Newmarket-Based Trainer Ed Vaughan Scores First U.S. Win

Former European-based trainer Ed Vaughan recorded his first win in North America on Sunday when front-running Alnaseem (GB) captured a $104,000 conditioned allowance event at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Alnaseem, who was ridden to a 3 ¾-length victory on the Matt Winn Turf Course by Adam Beschizza, was Vaughan's ninth starter in the U.S.

“We got over to the U.S. in November and have been stabled at Keeneland since then,” Vaughan said. “In (Alnaseem's) stateside-debut, she ran as we expected. She was training well but had to get used to learning how horses run here being quicker from the gates.”

Beschizza and Vaughan have teamed up several times in Europe prior to Beschizza moving his tack to the U.S. in late 2017. The 28-year-old Beschizza used to be Vaughan's primary stable jockey in Europe.

Vaughan took out his trainer's license in 2004 and was based at Newmarket until his move to Keeneland in 2020. He spent four years working in the U.S. after graduating from the Irish National Stud course. He served as the assistant trainer to Noel Chance prior to joining forces with the late Alec Stewart. Vaughan started training on his own following Stewart's death in 2004, eventually moving his stable to Newmarket in 2011.

In Europe, Vaughan campaigned multiple Group 2 winner Dame Malliot and Group 3 winner Robin Hoods Bay (GB).

“The Kentucky circuit is a good place to be based,” Vaughan said. “Being at Keeneland it gives you the option to ship to many tracks around the area including Churchill Downs.”
