Entries Close For Irish EBF Barrier Trials on Wednesday

Entries for the Aug. 18 Irish EBF Barrier Trials at Dundalk close at 5 p.m. GMT on Wednesday, Aug. 11, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing announced on Tuesday. Backed by the Irish European Breeders' Fund and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board and operated by ITM, the trials-which begin at 12 p.m.–are open to unraced 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds over five, six and seven furlongs. Recent graduates of the programme include G3 Gordon S. hero Ottoman Emperor (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) and Listed Yeomanstown Stud Irish EBF S. winner Wren's Breath (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}). A live stream of the trials will be available to view on the ITM YouTube channel, while the trials are recorded, timed, and made available to view online shortly after running on the ITM website and social media. Prize Money Boost For Irish EBF Ballyhane S.

The value of the second running of the Irish EBF Ballyhane S. has been increased from €200,000 to €300,000, the Irish European Breeders' Fund, Ballyhane Stud and Horse Racing Ireland announced on Monday. The median auction race is now the most valuable 2-year-old race that will be held in Ireland in 2021, with the race aimed at EBF eligible 2-year-olds with a sire's median price of no more than €75,000 from last year's yearling sales. It will be conducted over five furlongs and 205 yards at Naas Racecourse on Bank Holiday Monday, Aug. 2 with a maximum field of 24.

The winner of the €300,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane S. will receive €150,000 with prize money paid down to 12th place. There will also be the Silver Irish EBF Ballyhane S. added to the Naas card that will carry a purse of €50,000 with prize money paid down to sixth place. This race is automatically open to all those horses still entered which receive a ballot number in the Irish EBF Ballyhane S. and 48-hour declarations will apply. June 23rd is the next forfeit stage, with the final forfeit stage on July 28th.

Record €2.6m Sponsorship Contribution From Irish EBF

The Irish European Breeders' Fund will contribute its highest level of sponsorship with its allocation devoted to races set to increase to €2.6 million in 2021. The largest sponsor of Irish racing, the EBF has already contributed €52 million since the foundation of the Irish European Breeders' Fund in 1983. The funding will be spread across 320 Flat races and 160 National Hunt races, all carrying EBF conditions.

The popular Median Sires Series will comprise of 26 races, each worth a minimum of €25,000, while the Irish EBF Ballyhane S., now in its second year, will have a minimum prize fund of €200,000.

The €695,000 Irish EBF Auction Series, formerly co-sponsored with Foran Equine, will be run by the Irish EBF with all prize-money levels upheld from April to October. The series consists of 25 qualifiers and a final at Naas on Oct. 17 worth €120,000 final.

Across Ireland, 95% of 2-year-old maidens and 33% of 3-year-old maidens receive EBF support, as well as a series of 3-year-old and upwards fillies' handicaps and four €125,000 premier handicaps on Irish Champions Weekend.

More than 50% of the annual National Hunt budget will be aimed at enhancing the mares' programme.

“I would like to thank all the Irish Stallion Farms, large and small, who fund the Irish EBF and put us in a position to increase the annual sponsorship of Irish racing and allow us to continue to provide many valuable options to owners and trainers of horses of both codes,” said John O'Connor, chairman of the Irish EBF.

“The Irish EBF board would also like to sincerely thank Foran Equine for their wonderful support over the last four years with the Auction Series. It has quickly grown and established itself as a prominent feature on the Irish Flat racing programme and we are delighted to be in a position to maintain prize-money levels this year with the ongoing support of Horse Racing Ireland.”

Commenting on the enhanced contribution from the EBF, leading trainer Ger Lyons added, “We landed the €120,000 auction final last year with Ecliptical after targeting it since its inception. The horse was an €18,000 purchase as a yearling, so this series offers our owners a real reason to stay on board season after season. It was a huge thrill for Vincent Gaul, who is a long-standing owner and always has several horses in training at Glenburnie. The lucrative pot on offer in the Irish EBF Ballyhane race combined with all the median sires races gives us plenty to aim for with our string of 2-year-olds. The fact that prize-money levels will be maintained this season is great news and we really appreciate the investment and ongoing support from the Irish EBF and HRI.”

Irish EBF Ballyhane S. Attracts Bumper Entry

Following its successful inaugural running in 2020, the valuable Irish EBF Ballyhane S. has attracted an entry of 369 juveniles for its return on Aug. 2.

With guaranteed prize-money of at least €200,000, the juvenile contest, which is run over six furlongs at Naas on the August Bank Holiday Monday, has understandably proved popular. It also offers a bonus of €50,000 if the winner is by a Ballyhane Stud stallion.

“We are delighted to co-sponsor with the Irish EBF and have been thrilled with the response from a large variety of owners and trainers from Ireland and Britain,” said Ballyhane Stud owner Joe Foley. “Last year we had more than 400 entries and were able to stage a consolation race as well. There are fewer entries from Britain this year as a result of Brexit travel concerns and Covid, but it's still a fantastic level of support. I think people like the fact that the entry fees all go into the prize-money for the main race and the consolation race.”

He added, “We had positive feedback from the breeze-up consignors last year who felt that it was a great selling point for the horses with an entry, and that it helped to improve their sales price. A lot of them have signed up again this year and eligible horses will be advertised in the breeze-up catalogues. Of course it's an even greater incentive to buy a 2-year-old by a Ballyhane sire as, if the race is won by a horse by Dandy Man, Elzaam or Prince Of Lir, the winning owner will receive around €200,000 with the bonus.”

Last year's Irish EBF Ballyhane S. was won by Coolmore's Chief Little Hawk (Air Force Blue), who scooped €149,200 of the total prize fund of €291,400, with prize-money awarded down to the 12^th place finisher. The Jack Davison-trained Mooneista (Ire), a filly by Dandy Man (Ire) who started at odds of 50/1, came closest to landing the Ballyhane bonus when finishing third, just 2½ lengths behind the winner.

The Silver Irish EBF Ballyhane S., run on the same card for those who missed the cut, had prize-money to 10^th place and a total pot of €72,000.
