He’ll Take Manhattan: Instilled Regard Gives Brown Sixth Win In Grade 1 Turf Fixture

As is quickly becoming custom, the Grade 1, $400,000 Manhattan was dominated by four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown, who saddled Instilled Regard and Rockemperor to a one-two finish in the prestigious 1 1/4-mile turf race on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The win was Brown's sixth Manhattan victory in nine years. He first won the race in 2012 with Desert Blanc and in 2019 saw his barn complete the trifecta, with champion Bricks and Mortar taking home the top prize.

Mirroring the tight finish on the track, OXO Equine's Instilled Regard and Rockemperor were practically inseparable in the betting as both went off at 2-1 in Brown's quest to win back-to-back editions of the Manhattan for a third time, with Rockemperor the slight favorite as they each sought their first Grade 1 victory.

When the gates opened, Rockemperor gained a distinct advantage over his stablemate heading into the clubhouse turn as Hall of Famer John Velazquez piloted the 4-year-old colt into the garden spot, just off the pace while hugging the fence. Instilled Regard was forced to settle in midpack with the meet's leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard as Cross Border led the eight-horse field through modest splits of 24.56 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, 50.46 for the half, and 1:15.93 for three-quarters on Belmont's firm inner turf course.

From the back of the pack, Sadler's Joy uncorked a menacing rally on the outside, while Rockemperor's fortuitous run continued as he tipped out from behind horses into the stretch and a chasm opened up in front of him. But Ortiz, Jr. deftly navigated Instilled Regard through traffic, making a decisive move to split the pair at the sixteenth pole and then charging home to a neck victory over his stablemate, hitting the wire in 2:02.59.

“They both got really good trips,” said Brown. “Both jockeys did a great job and both horses responded super. It's unfortunate one of them had to lose. In the end, Instilled Regard just made the last move of the chess match. I'm so proud of the horse. He keeps getting better.”

Brown credited his staff for the success in the Manhattan.

“It's a testament to my team,” Brown said after the race. “Through the years a lot of different horses have passed through our hands but much of my same team is intact and they've been working with all these horses. All the credit goes to them.”

The Manhattan marked the second win of the year for Instilled Regard, a son of Arch who also finished third in the Grade 1 Pegasus Turf Invitational in his 2020 debut. After he started on dirt, running a late-closing fourth-place finish in the 2018 Kentucky Derby while in the barn of Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, Instilled Regard has only once finished outside the trifecta on the surface. The Manhattan score bumped his earnings to $983,240, just shy of the million-dollar mark, and he returned $6.30 on a $2 win wager.

“His mind is getting better and better every time he runs on the grass,” said Ortiz. “With this horse, he does everything you want. I like that. I can use it to get in position and he comes back to me so well. He saved all the energy until the end. When I asked him for it, he gave it. I had to work so hard but when I tipped him out, he responded so well. I knew I had a chance to get there, and he got there on time.”

Hard-knocking veteran Sadler's Joy came up just short yet again on the Belmont turf, finishing a half-length behind Rockemperor in third.

“Unfortunately for him, he was at a disadvantage going a mile and a quarter with no pace,” said Javier Castellano, rider of Sadler's Joy. “He was closing very well. I was not disappointed at all in the horse. He always tries and one day, we're going to catch up.”

Channel Maker, Cross Border, Spooky Channel, Devamani and Dot Matrix completed the order of finish.

Live racing resumes Sunday with a 10-race card First post is 1:15 p.m. Eastern.

Newspaperofrecord Caps Five-Win Day For Irad Ortiz Jr. With Frontrunning Just A Game Score

Klaravich Stables' Newspaperofrecord, undefeated as a juvenile en route to a score in the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, continued a perfect start to her 4-year-old campaign with a commanding frontrunning score in the Grade 1, $250,000 Just a Game at one-mile over the Widener turf course on a rainy Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The 27th edition of the Just a Game capped a stakes-laden card that also featured the Grade 2, $250,000 New York, won by Mean Mary at 1 ¼ miles on the inner turf; the Grade 2, $150,000 True North for 4-year-olds and up going 6 ½ furlongs captured by Firenze Fire; and a 27-1 upset from Victim of Love in the Grade 3, $100,000 Vagrancy for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up sprinting 6 ½ furlongs on the main track.

Trained by four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown, Newspaperofrecord was winless in three sophomore starts, but the daughter of Lope de Vega returned to form in her 4-year-old debut with a four-length gate-to-wire win in the Grade 3 Intercontinental on June 6 at Belmont.

Sent to post as the even-money second choice behind stablemate Uni, the reigning Champion Turf Female, Newspaperofrecord zipped to the lead out of post 3 under regular pilot Irad Ortiz, Jr. and marked the opening quarter-mile in 23.79 seconds on the turf labeled firm.

Newspaperofrecord continued to lead the charge down the backstretch, reaching the half-mile in 48.13 with Valedictorian in close pursuit followed by a large gap back to stablemates Regal Glory and Uni.

Uni, with Joel Rosario up, and Regal Glory, under Belmont Stakes-winning rider Manny Franco, launched their bids in tandem through the turn as Valedictorian faded with Newspaperofrecord's lead diminishing. Ortiz, sensing the pressure, took a quick peek back at the competition and asked his talented filly for more and she instantly responded with a tremendous turn of foot to separate herself from the competition.

Newspaperofrecord bounded effortlessly away from the field down the lane to secure the three-length length victory in a final time of 1:35.62. Multiple graded-stakes winner Beau Recall rallied from last to earn place by a half-length over Uni. Regal Glory, Zofelle, and Valedictorian rounded out the order of finish. Got Stormy was scratched.

The victory marked the fourth consecutive Just a Game win for Brown, who won previously with Antonoe [2017], A Raving Beauty [2018] and Rushing Fall [2019].

Brown said he was proud of the impressive effort from Newspaperofrecord on three week's rest.

“We trained her lightly and she has been training very relaxed. Last time, she was going really fast and was a little fresh,” said Brown. “Irad was confident that he could get her to rate a little bit. I loved our post today, off the fence a little bit. The last-minute showers didn't hurt us either. We all know that she likes a little juice in the ground. It was a good effort after three weeks. I was very proud of her. My team has done a great job with her. She's never looked better. She's training so comfortably in the mornings.”

Ortiz said Newspaperofrecord could continue to carry her speed even further going forward.

“She's doing good and has come back really good,” said Ortiz. “Going seven-eighths to a mile is good for her; she can go further, too, and I would not be afraid to go a mile and a sixteenth. I just followed Chad's instructions.”

Ortiz enjoyed a remarkable day at the races with five wins from 10 mounts on the 11-race card. He secured the early double with Sun Summers and Foolish Ghost and notched his third with Flying Finish in the day's fifth race ahead of a score in the Grade 2 True North with Firenze Fire.

The veteran rider, who leads the Belmont spring / summer meet with 27 wins, has earned Eclipse Award honors as Outstanding Jockey the past two seasons. He said the five-win day is a continuation of his dedication to excellence.

“It feels great. I have great support from all the owners and trainers. I'm so happy,” said Ortiz. “It's a dream and I'm working really hard because right now I'm on top in my career. I try to stay focused and try to do the right thing. It's big for me; anytime you can get five wins, it's amazing.”

His brother, Jose Ortiz, said he was pleased with the effort to rally from last-of-six aboard Beau Recall to complete the exacta.

“It was a great effort. I broke OK. She got into a good position and a good rhythm. It's really soft out there,” said Jose Ortiz. “I followed Uni the whole way around there and had a great trip. The winner is just a freak on the soft turf. She loves it.”

Rosario, aboard beaten favorite Uni, said his mare would have appreciated a contested pace.

“She went nice around there and I started making my move early. It looked like the pace wasn't fast,” said Rosario. “I knew there was soft ground. She tried really hard, but today was not her day. I think she needed the race.”

Newspaperofrecord began her career with victories in a Saratoga turf maiden event, the Grade 2 Miss Grillo at Belmont Park and the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs by a combined 20 lengths. As a sophomore, the Lope de Vega bay completed the exacta in the Grade 3 Edgewood at Churchill Downs and the Grade 3 Wonder Again at Belmont ahead of an off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational.

Bred in Ireland by Times of Wigan, Newspaperofrecord banked $137,500 in victory while improving her record to 8-4-2-0. She paid $4.10 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing resumes Sunday with a nine-race card headlined by the $100,000 Bouwerie, a seven-furlong sprint for New York-bred sophomore fillies in Race 8 at 5:04 p.m. Eastern. First post is 1:15 p.m.

Favored Firenze Fire Returns To Winning Ways In True North

Mr. Amore Stables' Firenze Fire backed up his favoritism with a three-wide move at the top of the stretch to secure a fourth triumph over the Belmont Park main track in Elmont, N.Y., in Saturday's 42nd running of the Grade 2, $150,000 True North.

The 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Poseidon's Warrior made his second start for trainer Kelly Breen in the 6 ½-furlong sprint for 4-year-olds and upward, following a distant fourth to Vekoma in the Grade 1 Runhappy Carter held June 6 at Belmont on a sloppy main track.

“For sure, he needed that last race,” Breen said. “I think the track had something to do with it last time out. He ran fast. He's run fast races before. He's a nice horse. When things click like that, it doesn't get much better than that.”

Piloted by Irad Ortiz Jr., Firenze Fire broke sharply from his outside post and tracked in fourth while Yorkton took charge recording an opening quarter-mile in 22.84 seconds with Stan the Man in second and Diamond King along the rail in third.

Ortiz gave Firenze Fire his cue at the top of the stretch with Stan the Man taking command and tipped his charge four wide in pursuit. At the eighth-pole, Firenze Fire found himself in front as he drew off to a 1 ½-length victory in a time of 1:09.39. Stan the Man finished second, 3 ½ lengths ahead of Yorkton.

Rounding out the order of finish were Wicked Trick, Diamond King and Midnightcharly.

In addition to a fourth victory over Big Sandy, the True North was a sixth graded stakes triumph for Firenze Fire, whose victories at such caliber also include the Grade 1 Champagne in 2017 and the Grade 3 Dwyer in 2018, both at Belmont Park.

A winner at seven different tracks, the well-travelled Firenze Fire last found the winner's circle two starts back in the Grade 3 General George on February 15 at Laurel Park when trained by Jason Servis.

Everything went according to plan according to Ortiz.

“He did everything right. We broke and got into a good position and I was just waiting,” said Ortiz, who scored his fourth victory on Saturday's program aboard Firenze Fire. “Turning for home, I asked him and he responded really well. We were close to the pace, but I just held him together. I didn't want to be fighting, so I just tried to let him relax and he really responded when I asked.”

Breen said that the long term goal for Firenze Fire is the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on November 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course.

“Hopefully, we can move onward to Saratoga and find a nice spot for him there. The goal is to get him to the Breeders' Cup,” Breen said.

Returning $4.20 for a $2 win bet, Firenze Fire inched his way closer to the $2 million-earning mark banking $82,500 in victory while pushing his lifetime earnings to $1,939,250. His record now stands at 26-11-3-2.

Jockey Joel Rosario, aboard runner-up Stan the Man, offered no excuses.

“The winner ran big. I can't complain with the result,” Rosario said. “We had a good trip. We were in good position and he was carrying me nicely. Turning for home, I thought we were going to win but we were just second-best today.”

A homebred, Firenze Fire is out of the Langfuhr broodmare My Every Wish.
