Dubawi’s Arqana May Star Debuts At Haydock

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Insights features a relation to listed winner English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}).

18.15 Haydock, Novice, £10,000, 2yo, 7f 212yT
AGE OF TIME (FR) (Dubawi {Ire}) was, at €800,000, the second-highest-priced breezer at Arqana May when purchased by Godolphin and is the first foal out of a half to the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial winner English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) connected to the likes of Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Dubawi's Emily Dickinson (Ire). Charlie Appleby launches him in the race won two years ago by Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

16.49 Newmarket, Mdn, £8,000, 2yo, 6fT
QIRAT (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) debuts for Juddmonte and Ralph Beckett and is a half-brother to the recent G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and son of the G1 Matron S. heroine Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}). He meets Phil Cunningham's fellow newcomer Fool's Gold (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), a Richard Spencer-trained half-brother to last year's G1 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}).

18.00 Newmarket, Debutantes, £8,000, 2yo, 7fT
BREAK THE BANK (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) cost King Power Racing 350,000gns at the Book 1 Sale, due largely to the fact that he is a half-brother to their five-times Group 2 winner Beat The Bank (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}). Like that classy and tough miler and the G3 Chipchase S. scorer Chil Chil (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and listed scorer Auria (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), he is under the care of Andrew Balding whose 2-year-olds seem to be above-average on recent evidence. Among the other newcomers in a fascinating contest is Amo Racing's €360,000 Goffs Orby purchase Monsieur Fudge (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a Richard Hannon-trained son of the GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

Half To Recoletos Debuts At Deauville

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner and sire Recoletos (Fr).

14.33 Deauville, Debutantes, €50,000, 2yo, f, 6fT
MONTE SANCHA (FR) (Frankel {GB}) is a significant member of this valuable Prix de Lisieux, being a full-sister to the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and G1 Prix d'Ispahan-winning sire Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper), the G2 Prix de la Nonette scorer Castellar (Fr) (American Post {GB}) and the listed winner and dual group-placed Ricla (GB) (Adlerflug {Ger}). SARL Darpat France's homebred, who was bought back by their trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias for €480,000 at the 2021 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, unsurprisingly encounters some intriguing peers including Prince Faisal's Teeran (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), an Andre Fabre-trained half-sister to last year's 2000 Guineas fourth Eydon (Ire) (Olden Times {GB}).

13.23 Deauville, Debutantes, €50,000, 2yo, c/g, 6fT
EVADE (FR) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) represents Qatar Racing Limited and Andre Fabre and is a €300,000 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale graduate whose half-siblings include the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Among his rivals is Haras d'Etreham's Vercors (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a Fabrice Chappet-trained half-brother to this year's G1 Ranvet and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. hero Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) who was a 220,000gns Book 1 graduate.

Ballydoyle Newcomer Catches The Eye At York

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Observations features a half-brother to Group 1 winner Sudirman (Henrythenavitagor).

16.45 York, Novice, £30,000, 2yo, c/g, 5fT
THE CARIBBEAN (IRE) (No Nay Never) is a rare Ballydoyle debutante in Britain these days, albeit at the track which the stable used to introduce smart juveniles such as Stravinsky in the 90s. A half-brother to the G1 Phoenix S. and G2 Railway S.-winning 2-year-old Sudirman (Henrythenavigator), as well as to Galileo's smart Star Of India (Ire) and Roman Empire (Ire), the January-foaled bay encounters the well-regarded Karl Burke newcomer Kylian (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Sheikh Hamed Dalmook Al Maktoum's initial foal out of the Listed Radley S. winner Hikmaa (Ire) (Roderic O'Connor {Ire}), and Clipper Logistics' Brave Empire (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a Roger Varian-trained 450,000gns Book 1 purchase whose dam was twice listed-placed.

Mutasaabeq Dominates HQ’s G2 bet365 Mile

Shadwell's 5-year-old entire Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Ghanaati, by Giant's Causeway) was rewarded for his consistency in pattern-race company with a course-and-distance win in September's G2 Joel S. and, penalised three pounds for that success, made a winning seasonal return in Friday's rescheduled G2 bet365 Mile at Newmarket. Racing on the front end after a slick getaway, the 4-1 chance poached a decisive advantage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under continued urging inside the final furlong to easily account for MG1SW G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by three lengths.

“He was supplemented for the [G1 2000] Guineas as a 3-year-old, so he's always been a good horse,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “He's got a good record here and I'm delighted with the way he's put it to bed, especially given he had the penalty to carry as well today. The blinkers seem to have helped him and we'll have to look at the [May 20 G1] Lockinge now. He's beautifully bred, being by Invincible Spirit out of Ghanaati, so that will have done him no harm today. It's obviously a week shorter now than it would have been between this and the Lockinge, had it been run at Sandown, but I think he should be fine.”

Pedigree Notes

Mutasaabeq is the sixth of seven foals out of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) and the March-foaled homebred is a half-brother to G3 Mahab Al Shimaal winner Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Ghanaati is one of three black-type winners produced by dual stakes winner Sarayir (Mr. Prospector), herself a daughter of MGSW matriarch Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).
