Into Mischief ‘Philly’ Shows ‘Em ‘Hoos’ Boss in Golden Rod

Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief) ran to her billing and kept her perfect record in tact Saturday, scoring her third straight win at Churchill Downs in the GII Golden Rod S.

A debut winner going 5 1/2urlongs at this oval Sept. 25, the $510,000 KEESEP acquisition showed two turns was no problem, charging home to a 7 1/2-length victory in a sloppy renewal of the 1 1/16-mile Rags to Riches S. Oct. 30. She prepped for this with a series of bullet drills and was duly made the 2-5 favorite.

Stumbling a bit at the break, Hoosier Philly quickly jumped into the bridle and kept tabs from fourth, running off the fence as 13-1 shot T Max (Connect) clocked a :24.29 first quarter. Charging up to take control as the half-mile went in :47.79 with Pure Paline (Curlin) hot on her tail, the gray bounded clear at the top of the lane and was on cruise control from there, coasting home to an effortless five-length score. She earned 10 points towards a spot in the GI Kentucky Oaks starting gate. Knockyoursocksoff (Kitten's Joy) was best of the rest in second with Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) in third and Pure Pauline filling out the superfecta.

“I've said multiple times, and I hope it doesn't come across as arrogant, I've never seen any horse like her,” said Tom Amoss, who trained 2019 Oaks winner Serengeti Empress (Alternation). “I've been training since 1987 and she's different than anything I've ever had come in my barn. The instructions to [rider] Edgar [Morales] were pretty simple, he was on the best horse and ride her with confidence.”

He continued, “Now, she'll get a break by design and will bring her back as a 3-year-old. She's a filly but I have entertained the thought of putting her on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.”

“She's unbelievable,” Morales said. “I had so much horse the entire race. I got behind horses a little bit going into the first turn but kept her outside and she was moving so easily. It's so much fun to ride her and so easy, too. She knows exactly what to do and when to do it.”

Pedigree Notes:

Hoosier Philly is graded winner number 57 for the all-conquering Into Mischief and one of 116 black-type winners for the Spendthrift kingpin. She is the 33rd graded scorer out of a daughter of Tapit, who was represented by his 30th Grade I winner as a sire Friday at Churchill in GI Clark H. victor Proxy. Tapella is a daughter of unbeaten stakes winner Princess Arabella (Any Given Saturday), who is also responsible for MGSP Ulele (Candy Ride {Arg}). Cheyenne Stables purchased Tapella for $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale and she won two of eight starts. Hoosier Philly is her first foal and she has since produced a yearling filly by Mastery and weanling colt by Justify. She was bred back to Munnings for 2023.

Nov. 26 Insights: Intriguing Juveniles Debut on All 2yo Card at Churchill

1st-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 1:00 p.m. EDT

Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys Farm homebred SHOPPER'S REVENGE (Tapit) is one of several well-bred juveniles debuting on this card. The gray is out of three-time Grade I winner and multi-millionaire Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat), whose career highlight was a win in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Three Chimneys acquired the mare for $2.8 million at the conclusion of her career at the 2016 FTKNOV sale and re-offered her at that auction two years later carrying a Tapit colt. Mandy Pope went to $4.4 million to take home Stopchargingmaria that day, with Three Chimneys staying in as partner, and went to $1.9 million for her first foal, a Pioneerof the Nile filly now named Stillchargingmaria. The Tapit colt she was carrying, now named Fifty Chevy, brought $825,000 from Japanese interests at KEESEP, but Shopper's Revenge RNA'd for $275,000 the following year.

Al Stall unveils another well-pedigreed colt in Sense You Asked (Street Sense). The $270,000 KEESEP buy is out of a half-sister to MGISW and young sire McKinzie (Street Sense), making his second dam MGSW & MGISP Runway Model (Petionville). TJCIS PPs

Clarkland Farm is represented by the final produce of their blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek) in LADY IRENE (Kantharos). A stakes winner in her own right, the 26-year-old golden goose has been the gift that keeps on giving for the Mitchell family. One year after she produced Into Mischief, who went on to be a Grade I winner and now the nation's leading sire, the Mitchells snagged her for $100,000 in foal to Orientate at KEENOV. Her third foal for their operation was Hall of Famer, four-time Eclipse winner, 10-time Grade I winner and earner of over $6.1 million Beholder (Henny Hughes). Her first million-dollar yearling was the Curlin filly Leslie's Harmony, who brought $1.1 million at KEESEP. Her Scat Daddy colt Mendelssohn topped that sale in 2016 when purchased by Coolmore for $3 million. He went on to win the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and is now a successful young sire at Ashford. Leslie's Lady's 2018 American Pharoah filly America's Joy set a record at KEESEP when summoning a whopping $8.2 million from Mandy Pope, but unfortunately she passed away in a training accident before ever making the races. Leslie's Lady 3-year-old filly Marr Time (Not This Time) is a 'TDN Rising Star'.

Chuck Fipke is also represented by a regally bred firster in his homebred Medaglia Forever (Medaglia d'Oro). She is out of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine and champion Forever Unbridled (Unbridled's Song), a four-time top-level scorer and multi-millionaire. OXO Equine's Larry Best went to $1.4 million to acquire the well-related ITZOS (Bolt d'Oro) at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. He was the third-priced offering at the sale and the most expensive yearling from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro. The bay is out of SW & GSP Lotta Kim (Roar), who is best known for being the dam of Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), who in turn is the dam of GISW Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini). Itzos is also a half to GSP runners Dolphus (Lookin At Lucky) and Gladys (Medaglia d'Oro).

Rodolphe Brisset saddles an expensive and nicely bred second timer in $850,000 KEESEP buy Talladega (Into Mischief). The WinStar and Siena Farm colorbearer will need to step up after a poor effort first out going shorter than he probably prefers at 5 1/2 furlongs in the slop at Churchill Oct. 30. He enters off back-to-back bullets over synthetic on the Keeneland training track, most recently going a half-mile in :47 4/5 Nov. 18. Forte 10-1 Individual Favorite in Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Forte (Violence) was made the 10-1 individual betting favorite while the pari-mutuel field of “All Other Colts and Geldings” from the 2020 foal crop not listed within the 38 individual betting interests was tabbed as the heavy 3-5 choice.

The four-day pool, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will open Thursday at noon (all times Eastern) and close Sunday at 6 p.m. Pool 2 will run concurrent with the lone Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, where fans can bet horses sired by 39 individual stallions and an option for “All Others” that were not listed. Horses from the 2020 foal crop by Uncle Mo are the 4-1 morning line favorite followed by Violence (6-1), Arrogate (8-1) and Into Mischief (8-1). All Other Sires is listed at 6-1.

As was the case last year, Pool 2 will assume that horses under the care of trainers suspended from competing in the 2023 Kentucky Derby will not be under consideration. Instead, they are included within the pari-mutuel field. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager or Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager. Should Churchill Downs officials determine during the duration of this week's four-day pool that one of the wagering interests has experienced an injury, illness or other circumstance that would prevent the horse from participating in the Kentucky Derby or Oaks, betting on the individual horse will be suspended immediately.

Uncaptured’s Havnameltdown Gives Bob Baffert 1-2 in Bob Hope

Looking to collect his second graded stakes win of the season, Havnameltdown proved he was up to the task with a professional score over stablemate Newgate in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar. One of three Baffert trainees in the short five-horse field, Havnameltdown and Hard to Figure (Hard Spun), breaking from the inside two gates, broke cleanly while Practical Move, exiting stall 6, was pinched back as the converging Newgate and Mixto (Good Magic) made their exit. The overly headstrong Hard to Figure proved hard to handle racing out of the chute as Havnameltdown, Practical Move and Newgate all pressed the issue four abreast through a quarter in :22.23. Taking charge heading into the far turn, the favorite carved out a half in :44.36 as the early pacesetter retreated leaving Practical Move and Newgate the only rivals in contention. A length and a half on top turning for home, Havnameltdown continued on with purpose late as Newgate loomed, however, the favorite proved best on the day to score by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. Practical Move finished a clear third.

“He broke nice and easy today,” explained winning rider Juan Hernandez. “Before in his races, he was sling-shotting out of there. Today, he was more professional. Our other horse [trainer Baffert's Hard to Figure] inside of us on the rail was trying to get out into us, but my horse took it well. He's learning how to run. After we cleared that other horse, I had a nice trip from there.”

Marking his debut at last July going five panels at Del Mar, the Florida bred made it two straight with a score in the GIII Best Pal S. at the seaside oval Aug. 14. Stepping into top-level competition for his latest, he finished 5 1/4 lengths behind subsequent Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Cave Rock (Arrogate) in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity Sept. 11.

Pedigree Notes:
Former Ocala Stud stallion Uncaptured–relocated to South Korea for the 2020 breeding season–is the sire of Havnameltdown and other 2022 graded winners Yes I Am Free, Willy Boi, and Lightening Larry, as well as two other graded winners. Of Uncaptured's 11 black-type winners total, two–Havnameltdown and additional graded winner Two Sixty–are out of Put It Back mares. The late Put It Back, an Honour and Glory/Relaunch stallion, also originally stood in Florida before his export to Argentina and has 30 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Havnameltdown and Two Sixty have another tie, as they are out of full-sisters. Two Sixty was bought by Stonestreet at last year's Keeneland November sale for $440,000 while in foal to Constitution and had a colt Jan. 23. Havnameltdown's dam, Ashley's Babe, has a yearling colt by Tapiture, who was a $4,500 RNA at Keeneland January, and was bred to Maximus Mischief for 2023. Her fourth dam, Rose Bowl (Habitat), was a champion in England and an excellent broodmare who produced three stakes winners, while her descendants include Canadian champion Strait of Dover (English Channel) and English highweight Iktamal (Danzig Connection).
