‘We Are All In This Together’: Spendthrift Reduces Most Stud Fees For 2021

Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm announced reduced stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021.

“Breeders are the backbone of our industry, and the bottom line is that stud farms only go as breeders go. We are all in this together,” Hughes said. “Our team recognizes the challenges of the times and how the entire breeding community has been affected this year. If we had room to lower a stud fee, we did it. We wish every participant in this great industry the best of luck and the best of health in 2021.”

Reigning champion general sire Into Mischief heads the roster yet again at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N and is booked full. He represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021.

Perennial leading sire Malibu Moon and popular second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile Bolt d'Oro, 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole, and the Northern Hemisphere's No. 1 Third-Crop Sire Goldencents will all stand for $15,000 S&N.

Spendthrift will also add multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma new to its stallion ranks. The Met Mile-winning son of Candy Ride (Arg) is set to compete in the Breeders' Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

Unicorn Girl, Dam Of Grade 1 Winner Jackie’s Warrior, Supplemented to Keeneland November Sale

Keeneland announced Sunday that Unicorn Girl, dam of undefeated two-time Grade 1 winner and leading TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance candidate Jackie's Warrior, and her weanling colt by American Pharoah have been supplemented to the November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 9-18.

Unicorn Girl, who is in foal to leading sire Into Mischief, and her weanling son both are consigned by Beau Lane Bloodstock, agent, in the premier Book 1 on opening day.

Catalog pages for the two horses will be released later this week.

In Saturday's Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont, Jackie's Warrior dominated his rivals with a front-running 5 1/2-length victory. The effort solidified the colt's status as a favorite in the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland and set the graduate of Keeneland's 2019 September Yearling Sale on course for an Eclipse Award as division champion.

“It was a very impressive victory for Jackie's Warrior in the Champagne, and Unicorn Girl in foal to Into Mischief on one cover and carrying a colt will be well received at Keeneland November,” said Carlo Vaccarezza, who owns the mare and weanling with John Williams. “Also selling the weanling half-brother to Jackie's Warrior by American Pharoah will show what she's capable of moving forward. John and I are extremely excited for this opportunity.”

The Champagne continued Jackie's Warrior's roll this year. He won his June 19 career debut by 2 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs and next took the Aug. 7 G2 Saratoga Special Presented by Miller Light by three lengths. On Sept. 7, Jackie's Warrior captured the G1 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga by 2 1/4 lengths in stakes-record time.

Unicorn Girl, by the A.P. Indy stallion A. P. Five Hundred, is in foal to the powerhouse Into Mischief, whose stud fee recently climbed to $225,000 for 2021. His recent headliners include Kentucky Derby hero Authentic and Test Stakes winner Gamine. Into Mischief was the leading sire by gross sales at the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where 19 of his sons and daughters commanded $500,000 or more. Five sold for $1 million or more, including the $1.9 million sale-topping filly.

“There is no telling what Unicorn Girl can do with a foal by Into Mischief,” Beau Lane said. “She is a powerhouse. She tried her heart out every time she raced. She's a quality mare who was an overachiever, and she passes that on to her babies. They have the same attitude. She is the kind that can give you that special horse.”

Unicorn Girl has a pedigree page loaded with quality. Out of stakes winner Horah for Bailey, she is a half-sister to eight winners, including stakes winner Bernie the Maestro, who earned $694,317, and a pair of stakes horses who banked nearly $200,000 each.

On the race track, Unicorn Girl was competitive, classy and sound. Racing on the East Coast, she won 19 races and earned $483,508 in 54 races.

“Jackie's Warrior proved his star power with his dominating performance in the Champagne, and we look forward to seeing him at Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland is especially excited to offer his dam, Unicorn Girl, who is in foal to the popular stallion Into Mischief, and his weanling half-brother in the November Sale.”

Following Breakthrough Frizette Win, Hamm Looking Forward To First Breeders’ Cup Start

Through the first three races of her career, Dayoutoftheoffice has handled every challenge. Stretched out for a third consecutive time and moving into Grade 1 company, the daughter of Into Mischief won the $250,000 Frizette for juvenile fillies going one mile on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont Park, N.Y.

A debut winner going 4 1/2 furlongs in May at Gulfstream Park, trainer and co-owner Timothy Hamm entered her against more challenging competition for her second start, resulting in a six-length triumph in the Grade 3 Schuylerville going six furlongs on July 16 at Saratoga Race Course. Bolstered by that effort, Hamm stretched her out again for her Grade 1 bow Saturday, and Dayoutoftheoffice responded with a two-length score in the Frizette, earning an all-fees paid berth to the Grade 1, $2-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on November 6 at Keeneland.

“She came out of the race good and ate everything up and looks good this morning,” said Hamm, who co-owns the horse with Siena Farm, her breeder. “She makes it seem easy. You get so many of these horses that whatever you try, it doesn't seem to work. Then you get these good ones and it makes it seem like a real easy job.”

Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Dayoutoftheoffice completed the Frizette by outkicking the favorite Vequist, earning a personal-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure. After handling increased distance in every start, Hamm said he is confident the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' 1 1/16-mile distance won't be a major impediment next month.

“Her demeanor is great. She's very calm and very push-button,” Hamm said. “She'll do whatever the rider asks her to in the mornings, so she's easy to train. That's the best thing about her. You never have to worry about her eating. When she trains, she does it exactly the way you want her to do it.

“We always thought she wanted more ground,” he added. “I have all the confidence she can handle the mile and a sixteenth. She's trained like it and she acts like it.”

Hamm will be saddling his first-ever Breeders' Cup contender, adding a milestone to a career that started with his first victory with Rose Colored Lady at River Downs in 1996.

“It's very exciting. This is what we all work for,” Hamm said. “All the trainers work to get in spots like this. Whether you're at the top of the training class or the bottom, everyone's goal is to get horses in great spots. It's special.”

Hamm picked up his first career Grade 1 win and his fourth graded stakes victory overall, joining Joanies Bella [2001 Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie] and Afternoon Stroll [2009 Grade 3 Appalachian]. Dayoutoftheoffice ended an 11-year graded stakes drought with her Schuylerville score and gave Hamm a win in the prestigious Frizette, which has seen 13 previous winners earn the Eclipse Award as Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.

“It's awesome. I always thought I'd win a few Grade 1s and you wonder when the first one would come,” Hamm said. “You do something long enough and stick to it, the odds are it's going to happen. It's great. You get it out of the way and hope you can move on for more.

“The Frizette is one of the major juvenile filly races each year,” he added. “It's one of the targets for these good fillies. In the history of our training, we've had a niche with 2-year-old fillies, so it's fitting it [first Grade 1 win] came that way.”

Hamm said Dayoutoftheoffice will head to Pennsylvania for a short respite before training at Keeneland heading up to the Breeders' Cup.

“She's going to Presque Isle and will spend four days just relaxing and getting a little R and R and we'll go down to Keeneland and train to the Breeders' Cup there,” Hamm said.

Into Mischief Filly Handles Winners at Belmont
