ROCKETEER (c, 2, Curlin–Thirteen Arrows {MSW, $277,375}, by Indian Charlie) went off at 3-1 in this debut spot and was forwardly placed just off pacesetting World Fair (Tapiture). The top pair moved through opening fractions of :22.97 and :46.63 before Rocketeer made his run to strike the front with an outside move passing the quarter pole. The class of the field in the run to the wire, the Brad Cox trainee cruised home to win by four lengths over 25-1 longshot D Day Sky (Omaha Bech). $1.5m yearling Stop the Press (Uncle Mo) was never a factor after a slow beginning and came home sixth. Thirteen Arrows, a $575,000 broodmare purchase out the 2016 FTKNOV sale, is a half-sister to GISW and sire Cross Traffic (Unbridled's Song) and also to the dam of SW/MGISP Gulfport (Uncle Mo). Her Into Mischief yearling colt brought a final bid of $525,000 from Repole Stable at this year's KEESEP sale and she reported a filly by the same stallion this Spring before visiting Life Is Good for 2024. DENIM AND PEARLS (f, 2, Into Mischief–Majestic Presence {GSP-USA, MSP-Can, $227,896}, by Majestic Warrior) came into this unveiling sporting a bullet five furlong move over the track Oct. 15 (1/25) in 1:00.40, and crowned the 8-5 choice by the betting public, jumped well to find herself in the midst of a hotly contested lead. Losing her advantage to a vying outer rival, she reclaimed command coming into the homestretch and briefly put open air between herself and the field. Shifting out as the challengers closed the gap, she met all rallies to the wire and got the best of a photo over Sweet Gal of Mine (Dialed In). The full-sister to 'TDN Rising Star' Newgate, GSW, $241,975 commanded a sizable price tag as a yearling–$500,000 at FTSAUG–and is the most recent to the races for her dam. She has a yearling half-sister Adeera (Authentic). Curlin’s $250,000 Stud Fee At Hill ‘n’ Dale A Match For Into Mischief’s

Hill 'n' Dale Farms multiple leading sire Curlin will have a stud fee equal to Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief at $250,000 LFSN, as the breeding operation published its roster for the 2024 season in a press release Thursday morning.

Farm stalwart Curlin, who has defined himself as one of the most preeminent sires at stud today, had his fee raised from $225,000. The 19-year-old is the sire of five individual Grade I winners this year, including Idiomatic, Cody's Wish, Clairiere, Elite Power and Bright Future.

Curlin's champion son Good Magic will stand for a 2024 fee of $125,000 LFSN. The leading second crop sire this year, Good Magic is the sire of both Kentucky Derby champ Mage and recent GI American Pharoah S. winner Muth, who sold as a 2-year-old for $2 million to Zedan Racing Stables, Inc.

Army Mule enjoyed a banner year in the sales ring and on the track. In addition to siring One in Vermillion, his first-crop Grade I winner, his yearlings sold for up to $600,000. His fee is set at $25,000 LFSN.

New to the roster this year is Grade I performer Loggins by Ghostzapper who will stand his first season for $7,500 LFSN.

Three Witches An Upset Winner In Gulfstream’s Princess Rooney

After seven straight races at Florida's Gulfstream Park, Three Witches (Into Mischief) might have to pack a suitcase. An upset winner of Saturday's GIII Princess Rooney S., she's headed to Santa Anita to line up in an all-expenses paid spot in the GI PNC Bank Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

After breaking her maiden in her debut last July, the 4-year-old took some time off before returning to the track to post three straight on-the-board finishes. Sixth in a one-mile spot two back March 10, she again went to the sidelines only to return a winner last time out facing optional claimers Aug. 27.

The only runner in the field to have never lined up in a stakes spot, Three Witches got a good early tempo to run at as Poiema (Neolithic) charged out of the gate and asserted herself up front through an opening quarter in :22.17. The field quickly spaced themselves out with the eventual winner floating back to fifth and held out in the clear nearly six paths off the fence. Racing between rivals into the far turn, the 10-1 shot wasn't making up any ground yet but really began to move into the final quarter mile past a half in :44.37. Angled outside of the leading runners, Three Witches had clear sailing home but had to contend with the closing speed of 7-5 favorite Maryquitecontrary (First Dude) who chased her home but had to settle for a narrow second.

 

“She's run some decent races where she showed some glimpses of hope and then she'd disappoint after a couple races,” said trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. “We gave her a break and she came back to win well. Today, she put it together. Obviously, she had to make a jump, and she did.”

“The Breeders' Cup, we'll talk about. It's another jump up. She earned the right to go. We'll have to decide. [Owner] Bob [Edwards] is going to make that decision. I'll give him feedback on how she's doing, but he'll make the call,” Joseph added.

Into Mischief picked up his 67th graded-stakes winner with Three Witches's win Saturday. Layreebelle, though unraced herself, was a $525,000 KEENOV RNA in 2018 and has already produced MGSW Kid Cruz (Lemon Drop Kid) along with GSW Spellbound (Bernardini) who herself foaled MGSW Soothsay (Distorted Humor). Another of her daughters, Rebelle (Hard Spun), produced GII Woodward S. runner up Film Star (Flatter). The dam is herself a half-sister to GISP Magical Illusion (Pulpit), better known as the grand-dam of Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) through her daughter, Broodmare of the Year Stage Magic. The winner has an unraced 2-year-old full-brother who brought $450,000 as a yearling at the FTSAUG sale, a yearling Candy Ride (Arg) half-sister who sold for $375,000 at last month's Keeneland September Sale and a weanling half-brother, also by Candy Ride (Arg).
