Into Mischief Son Rowayton To Pennsylvania’s Diamond B Farm

Glenn and Becky Brok have announced that Rowayton, a Grade 1-placed son of leading sire Into Mischief has been retired and will enter stud in 2021 at their Diamond B Farm in Mohrsville, Pa.

Bred in Kentucky by H. Allen Pointexter, Rowayton was produced from the Indian Charlie mare, Rosemonde, a half sister to multiple graded stakes winner and Canadian champion Miss Mischief. He was a $320,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase by Larry Best's OXO Equine in 2017.

Rowayton won his first start in a maiden special weight race at Del Mar and in his second start was runner-up to champion Game Winner in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity after leading until deep stretch. He ran third behind Game Winner again in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes in his third start.

Raced mostly in New York in his 3-year-old season, where he began with a sharp allowance victory at Belmont Park clocked in 1:14.94, Rowayton ran third behind Code of Honor in the G3 Dwyer and fourth to Mind Control in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens.

“Rowayton displayed his brilliant speed winning at Belmont Park where he was only 2/5 over the track record blazing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14 4/5 when he was trained by Don Chatlos,” said Glenn Brok. “His sire is enjoying incredible success and being from the family of champion Proud Spell, we feel like he will be a very important addition to the stallion ranks in the Mid-Atlantic region.”

Rowayton will enter stud for an introductory fee of $5,000. The Broks will announce a breeding incentive plan for breeders to earn a lifetime breeding right in the near future.

Rowayton to Diamond B Farm

Rowayton (Into Mischief–Rosemonde, by Indian Charlie), who placed behind champion Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GI Del Mar Futurity and GI American Pharoah S., will enter stud in 2021 at Glenn and Becky Brok’s Diamond B Farm in Mohrsville, PA. He will stand for $5,000.

A $320,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate, Rowayton broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar and was third to Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) in the GIII Dwyer S. last season. The bay was beaten a neck into fourth in the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. and retires with two wins from nine starts for earnings of $252,130 for Larry Best’s OXO Equine LLC.

Bred on the same cross as this year’s GI Frizette S. winner Dayoutoftheoffice, Rowayton is out of a daughter of SP Kid Majic (Lemon Drop Kid), the dam of two-time Sovereign Award winner Miss Mischief (Into Mischief), as well as MSP Mind Out (Tapit).

Honest Mischief Retired to Sequel Stallions

Blue-blooded black-type winner and graded stakes-placed Honest Mischief (Into Mischief–Honest Lady, by Seattle Slew), who hails from one of the top families in the stud book, has been retired to Sequel Stallions New York. He will stand for $6,500 LFSN.

The Juddmonte homebred broke his maiden at second asking at Keeneland at three by eight lengths and was tabbed a TDN Rising Starby virtue of that win, then went on to be third behind Shancelot (Shanghai Bobby) in the GII Amsterdam S. at Saratoga in just his fourth career start. An allowance win at Keeneland and a win in the Force the Pass City of Laurel S. at Laurel closed out his sophomore campaign. He began this year with a runner-up finish to Volatile (Violence) in Churchill’s Aristides S. and closed with it with a win via disqualification at the same track in September. The Chad Brown trainee retires with a record of 9-4-3-1 and earnings of $287,464.

“Honest Mischief was pegged as a real talent by our exercise riders from the very beginning,” said Juddmonte’s Garrett O’Rourke. “He had raw speed, he was sound, and he had desire. He placed behind stars like Shancelot and Volatile at the top of their games and when he won, he won like a Grade I horse. Honest Mischief has such a genetic concentration of classic talent, on top and bottom of his pedigree, that expectation of his success at stud is just a given.”

By record-setting leading sire Into Mischief, Honest Mischief is from the signature Juddmonte family of Toussud (El Gran Senor). The remarkable Grade I-winning mare became a blue hen, producing Classic winner and sire Empire Maker (Unbridled), as well as GISW and sire Chester House (Mr. Prospector), GISW Chiselling (Woodman), MGSW, GISP, and sire Decarchy (Distant View), and GISW Honest Lady (Seattle Slew), who is Honest Mischief’s dam. Honest Mischief is one of four black-type winners out of Honest Lady, including GISW and sire First Defence (Unbridled’s Song).

“To stand at stud the son of such an incredible sire, as well as the magnificent female family Honest Mischief exhibits, is beyond exciting,” said Sequel’s Becky Thomas. “I am a super fan of Into Mischief and am honored to bring Honest Mischief to New York with the support and participation of Juddmonte Farm.”

Into Mischief Passes Tapit, Sets Single-Season Earnings Record

With another productive weekend, which included a victory by the impressive first-time starter and “TDN Rising Star” Life Is Good at Del Mar, Into Mischief has set a new Northern Hemisphere record for most single-season earnings by a sire. According to TDN sire stats, Into Mischief’s offspring have earned $19,994,815 this year. The record had been held by Tapit, whose progeny earned $19,914,317 in 2016.

A win Saturday at Churchill Downs Saturday by Asar in an $85,000 maiden special weight race, moved Into Mischief into the top spot. He added to his totals with a win Sunday by Valletta in a $40,000 maiden claimer at Aqueduct and then picked up another $34,200 when the Bob Baffert-trained Life Is Good romped to a 9 1/2-length win as the 1-5 favorite in the betting.

With earnings of $11,465,367, Tapit is a distant second behind Into Mischief in 2020.

“He’s a remarkable horse,” said Spendthrift Farm General Manager Ned Toffey. “There’s not a lot left to say about him. He’s shown that he can get any level of horse and at the same time is very consistent. That’s what has allowed him to get to the level he has gotten to. He is so good mentally. Such a high percentage of the mares he breeds result in, first of all, a live foal, and, second of all, a good sound foal. They get to the racetrack and they perform. He’s been prolific at doing that and the offspring have been prolific at doing their job from a consistency standpoint and a brilliancy standpoint. We are proud to be associated with him.”

In addition to the earnings record, Into Mischief leads all stallions in several categories for the year. They include number of winners (178), wins (266), black-type winners (28), and black-type performers (58). With three Grade I winners, he is tied with Speightstown, Violence, War Front  and More Than Ready for the top spot in that category.

Into Mischief’s 2020 accomplishments will almost certainly include a Horse of the Year title. With his wins in the GI Haskell S., the GI Kentucky Derby and the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, Authentic is a clear favorite for that title. He, alone, accounts for $6,160,000 of the total earned by Into Mischief’s offspring this year.

“Authentic is the horse that checked the last box in terms of his ability to get a Classic horse,” Toffey said. “That was the one question people still had about him, as remarkable as he has been as a sire. He started off at such a low price point, so the mare quality back then was not exactly stellar. But the great stallions seem to be able to overcome that. As he has added quality, you see the results of that. And the quality only continues to improve. As the mares have improved, you are starting to see these Classic-type of results. Authentic has very much demonstrated that.”

Into Mischief’s year also included a win in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, the GI Acorn S. and the GI Test S. by Gamine and a win by Dayoutoftheoffice in the GI Frizette S.

Into Mischief’s stud fee for 2021 has been set at $225,000.
