Collaborate Has Best Of Morning Breeze As Florida Derby Prep

Three Chimneys Farm and e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Collaborate breezed four furlongs Sunday morning at Gulfstream Park in preparation for a start in the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill n' Dale at Xalapa March 27.

The son of Into Mischief was timed in 47.05 seconds at the Hallandale Beach. Fla., track, the fastest clocking of 51 recorded at the distance, while returning to the worktab for the first time since producing a dazzling maiden victory at Gulfstream Feb. 27. He worked in company with Sound Machine, a 4-year-old stakes-winning filly.

“He showed great progression today. He's always been a good work horse,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “He worked with Sound Machine. She was a little keen early on. She was on the outside and was leading and they finished head-and-head and he galloped out stronger than her.”

Collaborate graduated by 12 ½ lengths under wraps on the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) undercard after completing a one-turn mile in 1:36.35.

“He has the looks physically; he's big, tall. Few are comparable to him in looks. As big as he is, he's very athletic, very fluid, very efficient mover,” Joseph said. “Watching him work today, you don't even know he's working that quick. He came the last quarter in 22-and-4 and galloped out. You don't think he's going that fast, but when you look at the clock, he is.”

The Kentucky-bred colt, who was purchased for $600,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, had finished a troubled fifth, beaten by just a length by victorious Democracy, in his six-furlong career debut over a sloppy track Feb. 6. Shug McGaughey-trained Bears Watching, who finished third, a neck and a nose ahead of Collaborate, came back to graduate Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park by 7 ¾ lengths.

“First time out, losing was a blessing in disguise. It didn't feel good on the day, knowing the talent that he had, but I think it helped us going forward,” Joseph said.

Collaborate will concede racing experience to his rivals in the Florida Derby.

“I think he's a special horse. Obviously, we're asking a lot of him to make his third start in the Florida Derby and have to face a horse like Greatest Honour and a few others that will be more seasoned. I feel like he's a horse who has the ability to overcome seasoning.”

Full-Sister to Mia Mischief Romps to Rising Stardom in Arcadia

Missy P. (Into Mischief) followed in the hoofprints of her Grade I-winning full-sister Mia Mischief with a dazzling, 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy graduation at Santa Anita Friday. Breaking like a shot from the outside gate, the 2-5 chalk contested the early pace alongside Reem (Danza) through the initial stages before settling a bit to be a h second through a swift first quarter in :22.16. Well clear of the rest of the field, the first timer drew even with Reem leaving the quarter pole and powered clear with ease in the lane under a motionless Flavien Prat, coasting home to an effortless 9 1/2-length victory.

Unlike Missy P., Mia Mischief took two tries to break her maiden, but did so by 16 1/4 lengths at Keeneland in 2017. She has won six black-type events since then, highlighted by the 2019 GI Humana Distaff S. A $135,000 KEESEP yearling buy turned $300,000 FTFMAR juvenile purchase, Mia Mischief summoned $2.4-million from Stonestreet Stables at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and was put back in training with Steve Asmussen. She concluded her career with a second in the GI Madison S. in July.

Spendthrift purchased their dam Greer Lynn privately after she RNA'd for $435,000 at the 2007 KEESEP sale and 12 years later they sold her for $700,000 to SF Bloodstock, carrying a foal by War Front, at the same auction as her daughter Mia Mischief. She went back through the ring a year later at Keeneland November, bringing $750,000 from Jane Lyon's Summer Wind Equine with a Medaglia d'Oro foal in utero. Her 2017 filly Lady Tamara (Cross Traffic), also sold at that auction, bringing $430,000 from Larry Best's OXO Equine. Greer Lynn produced a Goldencents filly in 2019, who brought $300,000 from Mike Ryan at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale in September. Her War Front foal died and she is still awaiting her Medaglia d'Oro foal. Greer Lynn is a half-sister to GSWs Sing Baby Sing (Unbridled's Song) and Roll Hennessy Roll (Hennessy); SW & MGISP Value Plus (Unbridled's Song); and SW & GSP Majorbigtimesheet (Carson City).

Seven More Go :9.4, Two More :20.2 During Second OBS Under-Tack Session

Seven more juveniles matched Thursday's fastest furlong of :9 4/5 during Friday's second of three under-tack previews for the OBS March sale, while another two tied the top quarter-mile time of :20 2/5.

Hip 220, the morning's first breezer, kicked off a strong day for last year's leading first-crop sire Nyquist. Consigned by Top Line Sales, Agent XVII, she was one of two Nyquist fillies to go in :9 4/5. The $67,000 KEESEP RNA, a June 3 foal, is out of a half to speedy GSW This Ones for Phil (Untuttable).

Nyquist's other furlong bullet came via J R Racing Stables-consigned hip 206. The $15,000 FTKOCT acquisition is the first foal out of New York-bred MSW and GISP 'TDN Rising Star' She's All Ready (Girolamo).

The Darley resident was also represented by hip 304, who covered a quarter in :20 2/5 for Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, Inc. The $200,000 Keeneland September grad is a half-sister to two stakes horses out of a half to Negligee (Northern Afleet), champion 2-year-old filly in Canada and winner of the 2009 GI Darley Alcibiades S. over Keeneland's old Polytrack surface.

Super sire Into Mischief had another productive day, as did his buzzed-about freshman son Practical Joke.

Into Mischief's :9 4/5 workers, both fillies, were hips 224 and 291. The former, who cost $130,000 at KEESEP, is consigned by Gene Recio, Agent XI. She's out of a half-sister to the dam of MGSW and MGISP young sire Good Samaritan (by Harlan's Holiday, like Into Mischief). Click for breeze.

Hip 291 is offered by Raul Reyes's King's Equine, Agent I. Bred by Spendthrift Farm and bought back for $85,000 in September, she's out of SW and GISP Topic (Discreet Cat) from the family of champion and dual Classic winner Afleet Alex. Spendthrift paid $5250,000 for Topic in foal to American Pharoah at KEENOV '17.

Precocious three-time Grade I winner Practical Joke was represented by hips 309 and 311.

Bred by Erv Woolsey and Ralph Kinder, hip 309 is a son of MSP Untraveled (Canadian Frontier). He's consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, Agent II. Click for breeze.

Hip 311 was a $120,000 Keeneland September yearling and is consigned here by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent XVIII. She's out of Peruvian champion Valiant Emilia (Per) (Pegasus Wind) and from the extended female family of last week's GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby upsetter Helium (Ironicus). Click for breeze.

Rounding out the furlong bullets was hip 196 from Silvestre Chavez Thoroughbreds, Agent II. The Florida-bred son of Chitu is out of hard-knocking, stakes-placed Satan's Mistress (Songandaprayer).

The other :20 2/5 breezer was hip 357. The full-brother to MSW juvenile Adventurous Lady (Kantharos) cost $220,000 at September and is consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent II.

The last round of OBS March breezes begin Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m., and will be broadcast live on the TDN and OBS websites. Sale sessions will take place next Tuesday at Wednesday starting at 11:00 a.m. Visit www.obssales.com for more.
