Not This Time, Knicks Go Lead Taylor Made Stallions’ 2022 Roster

Taylor Made Stallions has set its 2022 stallion roster and fees for the upcoming breeding season, headed by number one-ranked second-crop sire Not This Time who will stand for $45,000 S&N.

Taylor Made will further bolster its roster in 2022 with the arrival of four-time Grade 1 winner and top-ranked horse on the NTRA Thoroughbred Poll Knicks Go, the likely favorite in the $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

A stud fee for Knicks Go, who won the 2018 Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at two and this year captured the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational and the historic G1 Whitney Stakes at age five, will be announced after the Breeders' Cup. An earner of $5,553,135 thus far in a spectacular racing career, Knicks Go is a Grade 1 winner from eight to nine furlongs and has run triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures of 113, 111, 108 (twice), 107, and 104, all in top company.

Not This Time, a son of Giant's Causeway, is blazing a trail on the leading sire ranks. He boasts a crop-best 14 black-type horses, 10 black-type winners, two Graded stakes winners, and tops all second-crop sires this year with progeny earnings of $4,006,812, dominating his crop in nearly every major statistical category. In addition, he is the No.1-ranked sire by percentage of stakes winners in North America at nine percent in 2021; is the third-ranked leading sire of 3-year-old stakes winners in 2021, and the fourth-ranked leading sire of 2-year-old stakes winners this year.

Historically speaking, Not This Time, when compared to the industry's top tier of current stallions from their initial two crops to race, tracks extremely favorably to an elite group of stallions that includes the likes of Into Mischief, Uncle Mo, Munnings, War Front, and Tapit.

Even with the smashing early success, the future looks even brighter for Not This Time. His CI (Comparative Index-quality of mares bred) for 2021 was an exceptional 3.11. According to BloodHorse's MarketWatch, in 2019 and 2020, only 10 stallions in North America had a higher CI than Not This Time's 2021 book, and of those, all but one will stand for six figures in the upcoming breeding season.

Represented last year by the brilliant Grade 1 winner Princess Noor in his initial crop, Not This Time, the leading freshman sire of 2020 by number of winners (29) and black-type winners (3), has enjoyed another sensational season in 2021. His top performers this year include graded stakes winners Easy Time, winner of the $120,574 G3 Marine Stakes at Woodbine and runner-up in the $600,000 G2 Franklin-Simpson Stakes at Kentucky Downs, and Yes This Time, winner of the $150,000 G3 Kent Stakes at Delaware Park and the English Channel Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Instagrand and Instilled Regard will stand their second seasons at stud for $7,500 S&N.

Instagrand, a dominating son of Into Mischief and a precocious $1.2-million Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale purchase, led gate to wire in winning the G2 Best Pal Stakes by 10 3/4 lengths at Del Mar in just his second lifetime start. Undefeated at two, he was named a TDN Rising Star after winning his maiden special weight debut by 10 lengths, clocking five furlongs in :56 flat, just .32 of a second off the Los Alamitos track record. He also placed in the G3 Gotham Stakes and the G1 Santa Anita Derby at three.

Instilled Regard, a royally-bred Grade 1 winner by champion sire Arch and a $1,050,000 OBS March Sale graduate, proved a determined winner of the $400,000 G1 Manhattan Stakes, defeating six graded stakes winners, including Grade 1 winners Sadler's Joy and Channel Maker. A four-time graded stakes winner on dirt and turf, Instilled Regard banked $983,240 in a stellar career. He hails from a prolific family—his second dam is champion mare Heavenly Prize, the dam of Pure Prize.

Standing for $7,500 S&N, Midnight Storm, a brilliantly fast Grade 1-winning son of Pioneerof the Nile, saw his first runners hit the track in 2021. Numbered among his impressive winners are Great Escape, who captured a $120,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs in September, Easy Come Easy Go, a maiden special weight winner at Gulfstream Park last month, and Electrostatic, a debut maiden special weight winner at Colonial Downs. After being represented in 2021 by first yearlings up to $200,000 in the sales ring, Midnight Storm saw first 2-year-olds in training sell for up to $550,000 this year.

Mshawish, Medaglia d'Oro's only Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf and his fastest dirt miler, will stand the upcoming breeding season for $5,000 S&N. Mshawish is represented this year by stakes winners around the world, including 3-year-old Bellharbour Music, winner of the G3 Prix Daphnis at Deauville in France, and Sainthood, winner of the $200,000 G3 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park and second in the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.

In 2021, Mshawish has seven stakes horses (9.1 percent) and is the co-leading second-crop sire of graded stakes winners this year along with Not This Time.

Big Buyer Best Starts New Chapter As A Commercial Seller At Fasig-Tipton July

Larry Best has shaken plenty of hands at Thoroughbred auctions after the hammer falls and sales tickets are signed, but there was something different about the exchange on Tuesday at the Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale.

After years at the top of the bloodstock market as a high-dollar buyer through his OXO Equine operation, Best shook the hand of winning bidder James Bernhard for the first time as the breeder and seller of a high-dollar sale horse.

“I just congratulated him,” Best said. “Everybody congratulates me when I buy a horse, and this is the first opportunity I've had to congratulate someone as the breeder, and now I know how it feels. We got a fair value for the horse, and you hope they do well.”

The breakthrough offering was Hip 111, a Candy Ride colt out of the Uncle Mo mare Beyond Grace who sold to Bernhard for $350,000.

Best made his intentions to build a top-level broodmare band known in 2019, when he spent $5 million on Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Blue Prize at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. However, the true foundation of the program was built with his first major purchases at auction.

Though he'd made a couple six-figure purchases during the previous season's yearling sales, Best introduced himself as a sticker-shock buyer at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where he landed Beyond Grace for a sale-topping $1.5 million.

The filly went unplaced in three career starts for trainer Chad Brown, and she was sent to Candy Ride for the first time in 2018. Then, she went back to the well a year later to produce the horse that sold on Tuesday.

“I bred her to Candy Ride twice because of the quality of the first foal,” Best said. “This one has a big walk. About nine months from now, he's going to be right-sized, and should have some speed.

“Next year, I'll have probably 30 foals on the ground, and I can't keep all of them,” he continued. “A lot of people do the same thing, they tend to sell the colts and keep the fillies. In this case, I loved the horse but I have the full-brother (a still-to-be-named 2-year-old) already.”

Best keeps his roughly 35-head broodmare band at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky. The operation has further tied itself to the commercial future of OXO Equine as the consignor of his yearlings and the residence of his stallions, Instagrand and Instilled Regard.

Both Instagrand, a Grade 2-winning son of Into Mischief, and Instilled Regard, a Grade 1 winner by Arch, entered stud in 2021, and Best has committed his flashy mares to support them. In December, it was revealed that Blue Prize would be part of Instilled Regard's inaugural book at stud.

“We had a big year with Instagrand,” Best said. “He had 190 mares, so I'm excited about that. I got a little late start with Instilled Regard, but I love him. The pedigree is hard to compete with.”

The factory portion of the OXO Equine operation is approaching the point where it can start producing a full class of homebred racehorses and sale prospects every year, but Best said he still plans to continue being active as a buyer going forward.

Still, with one homebred sale under his belt, Best said he gets the appeal of being on the selling side of the transaction.

“It feels so good to actually breed a horse that someone values,” he said. “It feels right, so I'm going to balance my portfolio out, and it's part of my strategy.”

First Mares Confirmed in Foal to Instagrand and Instilled Regard

Instagrand (Into Mischief) and Instilled Regard (Arch) have both had their first mares confirmed in foal. MGISW Cambier Parc (Medaglia d'Oro) scanned in foal to Instilled Regard, and Grade I winner Concrete Rose (Twirling Candy), confirmed in foal to Instagrand. Both stallions stand at Taylor Made.

An Instilled Regard for Speed and Distance

Three months after it was announced that Larry Best's OXO Equine would venture into the stallion business with 'TDN Rising Star' Instagrand (Into Mischief) at Taylor Made Stallions, a second addition was made to the farm's 2021 roster in Best's leading earner Instilled Regard (Arch).

The 6-year-old will stand his first year at stud for a fee of $12,500 and Taylor Made's Frank Taylor said that demand has been high since his retirement was announced in December.

“We are very excited about having Instilled Regard added to our roster at Taylor Made,” he said. “You don't see horses like this come along very often. He's been very well-received and we're steadily booking mares to him.”

Bred by KatieRich Farms, Instilled Regard RNA'd for $110,000 at the Keeneland September Sale, but then brought the fourth-highest bid of the 2017 OBS March Sale when he sold to OXO Equine for $1.05 million.

Placed under the care of Jerry Hollendorfer, he broke his maiden by over four lengths in late October of his juvenile season before running second to eventual four-time Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense) in the GI Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity.

Instilled Regard became a top consideration on the Derby trail after taking the GIII Lecomte S. and while he had to settle for fourth in the 2018 GI Kentucky Derby, Taylor said he believed it was one of the colt's best efforts.

“He performed amazingly in the Derby,” Taylor said. “He broke last and had a terrible trip, but he just closed like crazy and ran the fastest quarter of that Derby and was closing in on Justify (Scat Daddy) and some other top horses in Good Magic (Curlin) and Audible (Into Mischief).”

After transferring to Chad Brown's barn, the dark bay switched over to the turf and placed in the GI Hollywood Derby in his final start as a sophomore. He came back at four to win the GII Ft. Lauderdale S.

Following a third-place finish in GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S. in January of his 5-year-old season, he won the GII Fort Marcy S., and turned in a come-from-behind performance in the GI Manhattan S. to defeat stablemate Rockemperor (Ire) {Holy Roman Emperor (Ire)}, as well as Grade I winners Sadler's Joy (Kitten's Joy) and Channel Maker (English Channel).

“It was absolutely amazing how he performed in the Manhattan,” Taylor recalled. “[Jockey] Irad Ortiz had so much confidence in the horse. I was scared; I thought he was going to run last the way it was looking. Then when he turned that horse loose, he exploded and shot through all the horses and finished up strong. It was just a turn of foot that you hardly ever see. It takes a superhorse to be able to do that.”

Instilled Regard retired with just under a million dollars in earnings, running in the money in a dozen of his 18 starts over his four-year career.

“It's very rare to see a horse run at all those ages and stay sound through all of that,” Frank said. “To go through the 2-year-old sales and then stay sound at two, three, four and five and have very little to no setbacks, to run steady that whole time and switch from dirt to turf, it takes a special horse to be able to do that.”

The son of Arch is out of the winning Forestry mare Enhancing, a daughter of Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold), an eight-time Grade I winner, champion and Hall of Fame inductee. Heavenly Prize is also responsible for the likes of dual Grade I winner and millionaire Good Reward (Storm Cat), graded stakes-winning dual-hemisphere sire Pure Prize (Strom Cat), as well as Just Reward (Deputy Minister), the dam of GI Personal Ensign S. winner Persistently (Smoke Glacken).

“Instilled Regard is a true Classic-bred horse,” Taylor noted. “That sire line, with Heavenly Prize on the bottom side, gets you distance. The Phipps family gets you distance. But he's also extremely fast. It absolutely amazes me that a horse bred like he's bred works that fast at a 2-year-old sale to bring a million dollars.”

Taylor also said he believes Instilled Regard offers a much-needed continuation of his sire line.

“I love the Hail To Reason line,” he said. “It's very interesting because we actually stood Kris S. (Roberto) with WinStar and he was a superhorse. Even going back to Halo (Hail To Reason), my father raised Halo so we were around him as a kid. That sire line, there's not a lot left of it and it's a strong strain that gets you the distance that we so desperately need in this country.”

Taylor added that he is encouraged by the similarities between Instilled Regard's pedigree and that of hot young sire Nyquist (Uncle Mo).

“If you look at Nyquist's pedigree, he's by Uncle Mo, who is out of an Arch mare. Then on the bottom side, he is out of a Forestry mare and she is out of a Seeking the Gold mare. So you've got Arch on both horses and then you've also got Forestry and Seeking the Gold on the bottom side for both horses.”

The first mare slated for Instilled Regard's book was three-time Grade I winner Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine and $5 million purchase for OXO Equine. Blue Prize was bred to Into Mischief in 2020 and this year's mating with Instilled Regard will double up on champion Heavenly Prize.

“If that's any indication of how he's going to be supported by our team and by OXO Equine, that's a big plus,” Taylor said. “OXO believes in the horse for the long term and we just think he is a super horse. I mean, he is a specimen. Once people see him, they're going to want to sign a contract.”

Taylor said that balance is the key word when describing Instilled Regard physically.

“Everything about him is just balanced,” he said. “He's got a beautiful head and every time he walks out, he has that presence– that Grade I presence. He's got a beautifully clean neck that ties in perfectly to his shoulder and a deep heart girth. What amazes me is that he looks like a true Classic horse, but then the fact that he had as much speed as he did and could run at two just blows your mind. This horse could do it all.”

With hopes for that same versatility and durability to pass on to the new stallion's offspring, Taylor said he finds Instilled Regard's price point to be of great value.

“At $12,500, he is an absolute steal,” he said. “If you want to breed a 2-year-old that is fast, he can get that. If you want to breed a horse than can run a mile-and-a-quarter in the Derby, he can do that too. This horse has got a big shot in my mind. If you look at all the other horses standing for $15,000 and below, I think he's the best value out there.”
