Friday Insights: Maiden Fillies Kick Off Keeneland Opening Day

2nd-KEE, $100K, Msw, 2yo, f, 6f, 1:32 p.m.

Drawn inside facing a field of 12, ROYAL SLIPPER (Uncle Mo) for Wesley Ward is out of $1.5m Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale pick up Laffina (Arch), making her a full-sister to MGISW and $4.2m FTKNOV purchase Bast. The dam is a half to GSW/GISP Mananan Mclir (Royal Academy) and to the dam of GISW Fault (Blame), another FTKNOV spotlight at $1.2m.

Lady Chai (Kantharos), a $570,000 Keeneland September buy, is a half-sister to GSW/GISP Shivaji (First Samurai) and to SW/MGISP Tarabi (First Samuari). Cherie Devaux trains for an ownership group that includes CHC INC., Hinkle Farms, David Ingordo and LBD Stable LLC.

Making her second start is $1,000,000 FTSAUG yearling Charlottesapproval (Into Mischief) who needs to improve in this spot after a well-beaten eighth on debut at Ellis Park Aug. 18. TJCIS PPS

7th-BAQ, $90K, Msw, 2yo, 1m, 3:48 p.m.

In a race redrawn from last Friday's rain out, Digital Ops (Nyquist) is the second foal out of MSW/GISP Flora Dora (First Dude). Picked up on a final bid of $600,000 at this Spring's OBS March sale, the colt is a half-brother to 'TDN Rising Star' Spun Intended (Hard Spun).

Drawn outside is fellow first timer and stablemate Unique Insight (Gun Runner). This one, a $360,000 Fasig-Tipton October pickup by Klaravich Stables, is a half to runaway Albany S. winner Drake's Passage (Tonalist).

To graduate, that pair will have to face a trio of salty second-time starters paced by the half-brother to Cody's Wish (Curlin) in Hunt Ball (Into Mischief). The Bill Mott trainee and Godolphin homebred stayed on to be second in his Saratoga debut Aug. 19 behind next-out GIII Iroquois S. runner up Risk It (Gun Runner).

Enlighten (City of Light), a $450,000 yearling, finished the best of the debuting runners in his own Saratoga race Sept. 2 but was ultimately fourth through a speedy seven furlongs.

Arguably the best-bred colt of the bunch, Pentathlon (Speightstown) adds blinkers for his second start after managing sixth behind Just Steel (Justify) and 'TDN Rising Star' Locked (Gun Runner) at the Spa Aug. 5. The Phipps Stable-bred counts MGISW My Flag as his third dam with family members such as champion 2-year-old filly Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat). TJCIS PPS

Sunday Insights: Stacked Field Of Fillies Make The Races

4th-BAQ, $90K, Msw, 2yo, f, 6 1/2f, 2:39 p.m.

The most expensive of a trio of first-time starters in this slot, AUDACIOUS (Into Mischief) brought a final bid of $700,000 as a yearling at Keeneland last September. Dam Veracity, herself a $1.7m RNA at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale, is a full sister to SW Cheery (Distorted Humor), the dam of MGISW Elate (Medaglia d'Oro). Veracity also produced GISP Chide (Blame) and the dam of MGSW Tax (Arch).

Drawn inside as the first half of a coupled entry, Martingale (Curlin), no slouch in the sales ring either at $575,000, is the first foal out of a stakes-placed half-sister to GSW/GISP Run Away (Run Away and Hide). The mare's second foal, a Maclean's Music yearling colt, just brought $460,000 last week at Keeneland.

The other half of the coupled entry, Catherine Wheel (Into Mischief), breezed a 9.4 furlong at OBS April this spring and sold for $725,000. Second by three-quarters of a length in her Saratoga debut Aug. 20, this filly is from the extended family of MGISW Arcangelo (Arrogate).

Montego Bay (Speightstown) is the first foal to race out of a half-sister to G1 St. James's Palace S. winner Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and to GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile victor Tamarkuz (Speightstown). This is the extended family of MGSIW Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) and GSW/MGISP Andromeda's Hero (Fusaichi Pegasus). TJCIS PPS

Opening the day's card, Treble Clef (Arrogate) debuts as a Juddmonte homebred for trainer Bill Mott. 1st-BAQ, $90K, 2yo, Msw, 6 1/2f, 1:05 p.m. ET
Spendthrift's irrepressible Into Mischief has had a whopper of a week at the Keeneland September Sale and a pair of immaculately bred juveniles are down to debut in the Saturday opener from Aqueduct. Juddmonte's BOUNTEOUS hails from a very active female famile, as his dam Hall (Tapit) is a half-sister to the operation's Eclipse Award winner Close Hatches (First Defense), the dam of MGSW/MGISP sire Tacitus (Tapit) and unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Scylla (Tapit); and to SW/MGISP Lockdown (First Defense), whose daughter Idiomatic (Curlin) defeated champion Nest (Curlin) in the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga last month. Jay Em Ess unveils its homebred Ignite the Light, a son of nine-times stakes-winner and GISP By the Light (Malibu Mooon), whose six scorers from eight to race include dual Grade I winner By the Moon (Indian Charlie) and GSP Wonderful Light (Tiz Wonderful). Commander of Truth (Constitution), a daughter of 2009 GIII Natalma S. third Jungle Tale (Lion Heart), was a $200,000 KEESEP yearling purchase by Becky Thomas this time last year and was sold to Lauren Carlisle for $675,000 at OBS this past March after breezing a furlong in :10 flat. MITOLE MAGIC (Mitole) was an $80,000 purchase out of the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Fall Yearling Sale, but matured nicely and was knocked down to First Row Partners for $275,000 at OBS this past March. The Feb. 26 foal is out of 12-time winner Blake's Magic (Bernstein), a half-sister to Canadian champion and four-time GSW and GI Atto Mile runner-up Mobil (Langfuhr). Agra (Blame) is a granddaughter of MSP Greenery (Galileo {Ire}), the dam of GI Donn H. hero, GI Woodbine Mile second-place finisher and G1 Dubai World Cup third Lea (First Samurai) as well as 2020 Iowa Derby winner Acre (Blame). Agra was bought back on a bid of $190,000 at this year's OBS April Sale. TJCIS PPs

IRINA'S CHARM (Justify), a $550,000 KEESEP purchase, is the third foal to race out of treble graded-stakes winner Strike Charmer (Smart Strike), who was purchased by Mt. Brilliant Farm & Ranch for $700,000 carrying to Tapit at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. The Apr. 13 foal is out of a daughter of SW/GSP Cat Charmer (Storm Cat), whose MSP half-sister Sweet Dreams (Candy Ride {Arg}) produced GSW/GISP Subconscious (Tapit). This is also the family of GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. third Impeachment (Deputy Minister) and of top sire Violence (Medaglia d'Oro). TJCIS PPs
