Eighth Jockeys And Jeans Stallion Season Fundraiser Sets Dates

The 8th Annual Jockeys and Jeans Great American Stallion Season auction to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) begins with a preview day, Monday, Jan. 8 at 9:00 a.m. EST on Equiring. The sale starts on that same website Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 9:00 a.m. EST and ends Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8:00 p.m. EST, the organization said in a release Thursday.

This year nine major Kentucky Thoroughbred breeding farms and individual owners are expected to gift seasons along with donors across nine states.

“This season sale is truly living up to its name, and as far as we can ascertain, it is the only one that includes stallions in this many states,” said interim President Eddie Donnally. “And it's the only one that solely benefits humans, namely those 60 men and women who underwent catastrophic career ending racing injuries.”

Since its inception in 2014, the drive has accounted for at least $800,000 of the $3.6 million raised by the all-volunteer group for the PDJF.

“Our sale not only offers solid stallions at a reasonable cost, but more importantly, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those that are no longer riding racehorses,” said Donnally.

A Quarter Horse fundraiser begins Jan. 21, which last year collected $70,000, while the Thoroughbred version totaled $40,000.

Sunland Park Hosts Fundraiser for Injured Riders

Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino is playing host to a fundraiser for recently injured riders 19-year-old Bryce Bourdieu and 21-year-old Joree Scriver. The pair will be presented checks by SPRC Simulcast Coordinator and Chaplaincy representative Rayeanne Holland Saturday, Apr. 1, the racetrack's final Saturday of the season.

Raffle prizes included VIP packages at Sunland Park, a Professional Bull Riding event, the Ruidoso Jockey Club and Del Mar Racetrack, as well as a $2,000 saddle, a $1,000 pallet of horse feed and $3,500 custom boots by Mario Garcia.

Raffle tickets are available at the Sunland Park Turf Club, with the drawing scheduled for Apr. 1.

Bryce Bourdieu was injured last August in Texas, where he worked as an exercise rider and assistant starter. The son of popular Sunland Park Racetrack Handicapper Julie Renee Farr and jockey Martin Bourdieu, Bryce is recovering from extensive injuries, two back surgeries and a lower leg amputation. His medical bills are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Joree Scriver was seriously injured during a New Year's Day race when the horse she was riding suddenly fell. She had emergency back surgery to repair several fractured vertebrae and continues to suffer from the surgery, broken ribs a collapsed lung, facial lacerations and a severely bruised spinal cord. She has been receiving rehabilitation care in Colorado.

Mental Health App For Jockeys Rolled Out

Irish Injured Jockeys has introduced a mental health app called Leafyard that provides tools, activities, and support to help all jockeys with any general mental health concerns. Research commissioned by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board in 2019 and 2020 found that injured jockeys were 46 times more likely to meet the criteria for depression than non-injured jockeys and reported higher levels of dissatisfaction associated with meeting the criteria for distress and generalised anxiety.

Ruby Walsh, former champion jockey and chairman of the Irish Injured Jockeys, said, “I suppose I wasn't shocked when I saw the results of the survey the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board commissioned. I have been around in the racing world long enough to see the highs and the lows, so whilst it didn't shock me, it did upset me.

“After consultation with Dr [Jennifer] Pugh [IHRB medical director] and [sports psychology consultant] Ciara Losty, Irish Injured Jockeys were happy to fund the Leafyard app, which I think is an innovative, action-driven, practical solution to support everyone in the weigh room.”

Irad Ortiz Promotion Raises $22,000 for PDJF

Jockeys and Jeans, in conjunction with Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices, an onsite Gulfstream Park vendor, raised over $22,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Saturday March 13 through sales of the masked Irad Ortiz bobbleheads at the track and online.

Ortiz personally signed hundreds of the bobbleheads there, and Klaravich Stables, whose colors the bobblehead wears, made a substantial donation.

“To say this promotion was a success would be an understatement,” said Jockey and Jeans President Barry Pearl. “Irad Ortiz is not only a champion rider but a first-class guy who truly cares about his fallen brothers and sisters. He spent a lot of time with us preparing for this event. And the entire team at Gulfstream Park really came through for us as they have in the past, and we know they will in the future.”

Jockeys and Jean Committee member Kenny Katz, who owns Uncle Louie G's Italian ices, conceived the idea and worked closely with track staff to make it a success. Last year he also oversaw the Tyler Gaffalione Bobblehead sale at the same track.

“I'm always amazed and truly touched when racing fans everywhere spend their hard-earned money to help disabled former jockeys,” said Katz.

Pearl and committee member Leah Whitsell, along with paraplegic former jockey Roger Blanco, were also on hand. “I want to thank all who helped and especially every one of those many hundreds who purchased a bobblehead,” said Pearl. “We are still getting orders from around the world.”

Jockeys and Jeans was founded in late 2014 by five former jockeys, and the all-volunteer group has since raised over $1.6 million for the PDJF, which makes monthly payments to over 60 former jockeys who suffered career-ending racing injuries.
