Kevin Harrell Captures Aqueduct Pick 6 To Earn NHC Berth In Indiana Grand Qualifier

Kevin Harrell of Marion, Ind. topped a field of 135 entries in the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Qualifier held at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, Dec. 4. Harrell completed the contest with a bankroll of $2,851.75 in his win.

“I hit the Pick 6 at Aqueduct and that's what put me in the lead,” said Harrell, who is in software sales for health care. “After that, I only made one bet just in case someone came in later and took me off the top.”

Harrell plays in the NHC annually and received a trip to the NHC Finals set for Bally's in Las Vegas Jan. 28 – 30, 2022. The win at Indiana Grand was his second seat, so he has a double shot at a share of the $2.7 million in prize money for the final. This year will mark the fourth time Harrell has qualified for the NHC Final.

In addition to advancing, Harrell received $4,000 in prize money along with a $500 travel stipend to Vegas. By winning the Indiana Grand tournament, his hotel and entry fees for the finals are covered.

The top four advanced to the NHC Finals from the Indiana Grand Qualifier. Also heading to Vegas will be Rich Pawlowski of Pennsylvania, who won $3,000 for second place with a bankroll of $2,707.50; Greg Gass of Zionsville, Ind. who won $2,000 for third place with a bankroll of $1,766.00; and Steven Simonovic of Wisconsin who won $1,000 for fourth place with a bankroll of $1,483. All players received an additional $500 for travel to Vegas along with hotel and tournament fees paid by Indiana Grand.

“I've qualified in the past, but this is my first seat this year,” said Pawlowski. “I actually started out with two entries and at the last minute, went up and bought a third one before the deadline. That third one is the one that got me into second.”

Gass, who is a regular player in the NHC Qualifiers at Indiana Grand, adds his seat in the final to a previously earned seat for the 2022 event. He only played on one account to advance. This will be his second season advancing to the NHC Final.

Simonovic traveled by car all the way from Wisconsin with hopes of picking up a seat for the final. The event in January will be his sixth time qualifying for the final and he will also have two seats to play when the event kicks off at Las Vegas in January.

Of the 135 entries for the NHC Qualifier at Indiana Grand, players came in from 19 states for the tournament, which was a $500 live money event. The contest included races from 11 different racetracks featuring more than 90 races as options in the contest format.

The 20th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is set to resume Tuesday, April 19 and run through Wednesday, Nov. 23. Racing will be held Monday through Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. with Thursday racing beginning at 3:30 p.m. A total of 12 Saturday racing programs will be held in 2022. American Pastime To Stand At Swifty Farms In Indiana For 2022

Graded stakes-placed American Pastime (Tapizar – Ryan's Inheritance, by Valid Expectations) joins the stallion roster at Swifty Farms in Seymour, Ind., for the 2022 breeding season. The sprinter will stand for $1,500 stands and nurses.

Finishing second to multiple Grade 1-winning Coal Front in the Grade 3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing in 2017, American Pastime also finished a strong fourth in the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar, close behind Roy H, Imperial Hint and Mind Your Biscuits but beating multiple graded stakes winners Drefong and Whitmore.

“His speed was fantastic on the track; he was an extremely fast horse,” says owner Mike Mowrey. “His Beyer numbers early in his three-year-old year were phenomenal—with zeroes and ones on ThoroughGraph—which is why he fit into the sprinter mold.”

Mowrey notes that he and trainer Bob Hess, Jr., discussed trying the colt at a mile, but he  suffered a bruised foot at the Breeders' Cup, which made it difficult for him to return to racing at 100 percent effort.

“His best attribute is his speed, but his personality is unparalleled to any horse I've ever owned,” says Mowrey. “He's a very smart horse—he's calm, cool and collected, but when he got on the track, he meant business. If he passes on his speed and his personality, I think his foals will be pretty precocious.”

Mowrey chose Swifty Farms for the colt's first full breeding season because of the many opportunities the farm and the state of Indiana presents for stallion owners.

“With the breeding program they have in Indiana and the sire awards, it was very attractive,” he says. “The location of Swifty, with the proximity to Kentucky and surrounding states, was perfect. And the cherry on top was Swifty's addition of (stallion manager) Jerri Harmon. I just felt that he will be in a good place, and if you're in a good place, good things happen. That's why I wanted to give him that opportunity.”

“We think the addition of American Pastime to our roster will expand the offerings Swifty Farms has, as well as bring a new set of bloodlines to the state,” says Harmon. “He's settled in quite well and we're looking forward to seeing what his breeding season brings us.”

Sleepy Eyes Todd to Stand in Indiana

Thumbs Up Racing, LLC's Sleepy Eyes Todd (Paddy O'Prado–Pledge Mom, by Wild Rush), winner of the 2020 GII Charles Town Classic S. and GIII Mr. Prospector S., has been retired and will stand the 2022 breeding season at Swifty Farms in Indiana. The 5-year-old, second in his Charles Town Classic title defense in late August, retires with a record of 20-8-3-1 and earnings of $2,051,725.

“[Indiana] is the perfect place for us, and I'm excited to get going with Sleepy's stallion career,” owner David Cobb of Thumbs Up Racing said.

“I could have taken him to a number of places, but I really do believe that regional breeding programs are the best game in town, and Indiana has a very strong program. I spoke with a number of Indiana connections, including Christine Cagle of Springcliff Farm and Jerri Harmon, Swifty's new stallion manager, and it just felt right to bring him to Indiana.”

Sleepy Eyes Todd will stand the 2022 breeding season for $3,500 (stands and nurses).
