‘Secret To Our Success’: Randy Matthews Stable Named ‘Barn Crew Of The Month’ At Indiana Grand

The Randy Matthews Stable is the recipient of the second “Barn Crew of the Month” of 2020 presented at Indiana Grand Tuesday, Sept. 22. The September honor was awarded to the Matthews team for their exemplary work in and around their shedrow and the overall appearance of their barn as well as their horses. The award is presented monthly by Indiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) as well as Texas Corral of Shelbyville, Ind.

Matthews, who is a native of southern Indiana, has been a staple on the backstretch at Indiana Grand for several years. In addition to his racing operation, he and his wife, Karen, also own a breeding farm in Greenville, Ind. He currently has 14 horses at Indiana Grand, including the undefeated Unbridled Beast, winner of the Gus Grissom Stakes last week.

Matthews was joined in the winner's circle by three members of his team, Felix Villalta, Stephanie Vanderboom and Mauro Parra for the presentation following the first race. The crew received a $200 gift certificate to Texas Corral for a night out for the group.

“These guys are all good friends and they work well together,” said Matthews. “The secret to our success lies in them. They run a good ship for our stable.”

Texas Corral, located on Route 9 in Shelbyville, is partnering with Indiana HBPA for the third straight year for “Barn Crew of the Month.” The award was implemented by HBPA to showcase the hard-working members of the backstretch that take care of the horses daily with some recognition for their dedication to the sport.

Racing is held Monday through Thursday until Wednesday, Nov. 18. All-Quarter Horse racing is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 24. For more information, go to www.indianagrand.com.

Marcelino Pedroza Back In The Saddle Monday At Indiana Grand

Marcelino Pedroza Jr., 2019 leading jockey at Indiana Grand, is set to return Monday, Sept. 7 at Indiana Grand. The native of Panama has been out with an elbow injury since a training incident May 28 at Indiana Grand.

“I've been working hard and exercising and getting on an equicizer to get back in shape, and I feel great,” said Pedroza. “I didn't want to get on any horses until I got the okay from the doctor because I wanted to do everything right. I got the okay from the doctor yesterday (Wednesday, Sept. 2) and was able to get on four horses (Thursday, Sept. 3). It feels really good to be back.”

Pedroza has been competing on the Indiana circuit full time for the past five years. He earned the leading rider title during the 2017 meet followed up by a title in 2019. Last year's record-setting season in Indiana brought him 153 winners during the 120-day meet. He set the record for most purse earnings in one season ($3,406,044). He also tied Rodney Prescott for most wins on one program with six wins. Pedroza has earned 15 career stakes wins at Indiana Grand and is ranked fifth on the list of all-time leading riders for wins in Indiana with 495 trips to the winner's circle, bringing in more than $12 million in total purse earnings.

“I've been exercising a lot in addition to my physical therapy,” added Pedroza. “I go to therapy for my (left) elbow twice a week and my therapist told me last week I was ready, but we had to wait for the doctor's okay. I'm just happy to finally be back and I can't wait to ride Monday. It's good to be able to do what you love to do.”

Pedroza has five scheduled mounts on the Monday, Sept. 7 racing program. He will begin in Race 1 aboard Talented Tapper from post one at odds of 5-2.

Racing is held Monday through Thursday each week through Wednesday, Nov. 18. Two more Saturday programs are slated for all-Quarter Horse racing days Oct. 3 and Oct. 24 with a daytime first post. For more information, visit www.indianagrand.com.

Voodoo Justice Becomes First Winner For Indiana Sire Harry’s Holiday

An impressive victory leading at every point of call on Monday at Indiana Grand made Voodoo Justice the first winner for her sire, Harry's Holiday, BloodHorse reports.

Voodoo Justice broke on top in the 5 1/2-furlong main track race and she never looked back, leading by 3 1/2 lengths in the stretch and extending her advantage to 5 1/2 lengths at the finish under jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan. The filly stopped the clock in 1:06.68 over a fast track for owner Rancho Monarca LLC and trainer Antonio Duran.

Bred in Indiana by Justice Farm and Greg Justice, Voodoo Justice is out of the stakes-winning Good and Tough mare Vain Vixen.

Harry's Holiday, a 9-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday, stands at Southern Indiana Equine in Austin, Ind., for an advertised fee of $3,000.

He won three of 13 starts during his on-track career for earnings of $197,657, highlighted by a win in the 96ROCK Stakes at Turfway Park. He also finished third in the listed John Battaglia Memorial Stakes and second by a nose in the G3 Spiral Stakes.

Harry's Holiday is out of the unraced Orientate mare Daily Mason, who is herself a daughter of Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady. This puts Harry's Holiday in close relation to leading sire Into Mischief, multiple Eclipse Award winner Beholder, and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn.
