In The Stud Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: West Coast, First Crop Weanlings Of 2020

West Coast has a champion's resume on his pedigree page and on the racetrack, and his debut foals get closer by the day to proving the same to be true for him as a stallion.

In this week's episode of In The Stud, we speak with Bill Farish of Lane's End about the Eclipse Award-winning son of Flatter whose first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Out of the champion juvenile filly Caressing, West Coast became a champion in his own right during his 3-year-old campaign, notching victories in the G1 Travers Stakes and Pennsylvania Derby, the G2 Los Alamitos Derby, and the non-graded Easy Goer Stakes.

West Coast then squared off against the top older horses in the world, turning in-the-money efforts in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic, Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, Dubai World Cup, and Awesome Again Stakes. He retired with earnings of $5,803,800.

In The Stud Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Tapwrit, First Crop Weanlings Of 2020

Going to stud with a classic win under one's belt is often enough to generate plenty of interest in a young stallion. Being a son of top commercial sire Tapit with a classic score on the resume only serves to further fuel the fire.

On this edition of In The Stud, we speak to Sean Tugel of Gainesway about Tapwrit, the 2017 Belmont Stakes winner whose first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Tapwrit was slotted for big things after selling for $1.2 million as a yearling, and he lived up to the lofty expectations. As a juvenile, he won the Pulpit Stakes going a mile at Gulfstream Park. He then emerged as one of the top 3-year-olds of his class the following season, winning the G2 Tampa Bay Derby in the spring and adding the crown jewel to his resume in the summer when he won the Belmont Stakes.

Tapwrit is out of the Grade 1-winning Successful Appeal mare Appealing Zophie, making him a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Ride a Comet. He will aim to be the successor to his sire, Tapit, who has been the anchor of the Gainesway stallion roster for a decade and a half.

In The Stud Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Sharp Azteca, First Crop Weanlings Of 2020

Sharp Azteca was one of the top dirt milers of his generation, and now the son of Freud will aim to pass that talent on to future generations.

In this week's episode of In The Stud, we speak to Tom Hamm of Three Chimneys Farm about the five-time graded stakes winner whose first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Sharp Azteca was a road warrior during his on-track career, with all six of his career stakes wins coming at different racetracks. At three, he took the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile Stakes at Churchill Downs and the non-graded City of Laurel Stakes at Laurel Park, adding an in-the-money effort in the G1 Malibu Stakes.

His best season was at age four, when he claimed the G1 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct, the G2 Gulfstream Park Handicap at Gulfstream Park, the G2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park, and the G3 Monmouth Cup Stakes at Monmouth Park. He also finished second in that year's G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar and the G1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont.

Sharp Azteca is out of the unraced Saint Liam mare So Sharp. He hails from the family of Kentucky Oaks winner Seaside Attraction, as well as Canadian champion Key to the Moon, Grade 1 winners Bowies Hero and Gorgeous, and Kentucky Derby runner-up Firing Line.

In The Stud Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Collected, First Crop Weanlings Of 2020

Collected did an admirable job preserving the memory of his late sire City Zip on the racetrack, and he'll aim to continue that pattern as he sets course on his stallion career at Airdrie Stud.

In the 2020 season premiere of the In The Stud video series, Airdrie Stud's Cormac Breathnach discusses what makes the 7-year-old Collected an attractive prospect for breeders, prior to the stallion's first weanlings going through the ring at this year's fall mixed sales.

Collected started his career on the turf, and he ran second in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes as a juvenile. The colt was then moved to the dirt at three, where he found his true footing with victories in the G3 Lexington Stakes and Sham Stakes.

At four, Collected became one of the top older males in his division, racking up wins in the G1 Pacific Classic, G2 Californian Stakes, and G3 Precisionist Stakes. He also finished second in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. In total, Collected retired with eight wins in 15 starts for earnings of $2,975,500.
