In The Hot Seat: Julie Camacho

The questionnaire series continues with Group 1-winning trainer Julie Camacho in the spotlight.

Proudest moment of 2023?
Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) winning the Commonwealth Cup to give us our first Group 1 and our first Royal Ascot winner.

What is your biggest ambition for the new year?
To try and keep the yard on an upward curve.

Give us one horse to follow and why?
Our horse to follow is L'Ennemi (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). We bought him at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale in October. He has a lovely profile and we were happy to secure him for 120,000gns. He has pleased us during his downtime this winter and hopefully he will give us and Martin Hughes [owner] some fun this season.

And a young person in the industry to keep an eye on…
Jonathan Harding at the Racing Post. We enjoy his work.

Who do you think will be champion first-season sire this year?
Pinatubo (Ire).

And the best value stallion in Europe?
Shaquille.

What's the one horse you wish you'd bought in 2023?
Florida (Ire) (No Nay Never). He just made a little too much for us.

Biggest regret?
Not buying Quinault (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) at the sales.

Biggest influence on your career?
Definitely my Dad [former trainer Maurice Camacho].

If you could sit down for dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be and why?
William Haggas and William Jarvis as they are great company. The third would be Bryan Adams for the entertainment. We saw him live at Steve Parkin's party last year and thoroughly enjoyed him.

In The Hot Seat: Ed Bethell

The questionnaire series continues with Group 1-winning trainer Ed Bethell in the spotlight.

Proudest moment of 2023?
Winning the G1 Sprint Cup at Haydock with Regional (GB) (Territories {Ire}).

What is your biggest ambition for the new year?
Keep training winners and try to train another Group 1 winner if I can.

Give us one horse to follow and why?
That's a really good question. I've got some really nice three-year-olds. I think Paborus (GB) would be the one to follow. He's a lovely, big horse by Recoletos (Fr) and he's owned by a couple of great pals of mine. I think he could be pretty good. He's a very big horse and I think in time he'll develop into a lovely horse.

Who do you think will be champion first-season sire this year?
Everyone seems to be talking about Earthlight (Ire), but I'll go with Pinatubo (Ire).

And the best value stallion in Europe?
I think Make Believe (GB) is very good value at €10,000. Or the simple answer for me would be Territories (Ire), who is the sire of Regional and stands at just £10,000.

What's the one horse you wish you'd bought in 2023?
I missed out on Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) as a yearling [in 2022] when he was on my list. I think he went through as a yearling for 50,000gns, but I just didn't have the budget for him at the time. He's been a bit of a pain in my bum!

Biggest regret?
I have no regrets.

Biggest influence on your career?
I guess my father [former trainer James Bethell] would have to get the call up on that one.

If you could sit down for dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

David Beckham would be one, I'd love to sit down with him. Margot Robbie would be pretty cool to have around and someone like John Magnier would be really interesting to sit and listen to. That's a really weird mix of people, isn't it?

In The Hot Seat: Diego Dias

The questionnaire series continues with trainer Diego Dias in the spotlight.

Proudest moment of 2023?
Mansa Musa (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) winning at Goodwood. It was a great day, the owners were there and everyone was very excited. It worked out as we planned and it was a great day.

What is your biggest ambition for the new year?
I'd like to win a Group race this year.

Give us one horse to follow and why?
I have to say Gaenari (Ire) (Inns Of Court {Ire}). She ran really well for us last year and, while she has not won yet, I think she's a filly to follow. She looks a different filly this year.

And a young person in the industry to keep an eye on…
Danny Sheehy. He rides a good bit for me. He's a very good rider but just needs the opportunities. I think he'll ride plenty of winners for us this year.

Who do you think will be champion first-season sire this year?
It's very hard to say but I liked the Pinatubos at the sales. The look like they are really sharp horses and, if I had to guess, I'd give Pinatubo (Ire) a big chance.

And the best value stallion in Europe?
I would say Arizona (Ire). He's a son of No Nay Never and, at only five thousand, I think he's good value. I have a nice filly by him. She goes very well.

What's the one horse you wish you'd bought in 2023?
It was a filly foal by Blue Point (Ire) at Goffs. I was the underbidder but I wish I bought her.

Biggest regret?
I don't have any regrets. I feel very lucky about where I am now and the hard work that me and my team is doing is paying off. Hopefully we'll keep the results going in 2024.

Biggest influence on your career?
I have to say my Dad. He was a jockey and a trainer and I always wanted to be like him.

In The Hot Seat: Clare Manning

The latest industry member to share their best moments from 2023 and likely prospects for this year is Boherguy Stud's Clare Manning.

Proudest moment of 2023?

Frazil (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), who Dad [Kevin] and I bought as a foal, winning his maiden at Naas in my own colours

What is your biggest ambition for the new year?

Make money and sell winners.

Give us one horse to follow and why?

A two-year-old Blue Point (Ire) colt out of Bandiuc Eile (Ire). He always had a great attitude throughout his prep and looked like the real deal.

And a young person in the industry to keep an eye on…

Conor Wixted–he'll go places.

Who do you think will be champion first-season sire this year?

Earthlight (Ire), or at least I hope so!

And the best value stallion in Europe?

Teofilo (Ire), standing at Kildangan Stud for €30,000. I'm definitely biased but he's produced a Group 1 winner in his first 11 crops, not to mention the impact he's having as a broodmare sire.

What's the one horse you wish you'd bought in 2023?

A Too Darn Hot (GB) colt from New England at Tatts Foals that Guy O'Callaghan bought for 185,000gns.

Biggest regret?

Not winning the lotto and being able to buy more foals.

Biggest influence on your career?

Dad and Granda [Jim Bolger]–they haven't steered me wrong, yet!

If you could sit down for dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

Joe Lyng, Mark O Sullivan and Eleanor Dunne. The lads always make for an interesting and entertaining dinner while Eleanor will guarantee it's in done in style.
