Imagination Wins San Felipe Thriller, Leads Baffert Exacta

The GII San Felipe S. last its headliner with the scratch of the Bob Baffert-trained Nysos (Nyquist), but Baffert still dominated the race with stablemates Imagination (Into Mischief) and Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso) running in tandem for much of the 1 1/16 miles and in lockstep down the stretch before Imagination just got his nose in front on the wire Sunday at Santa Anita.

Of his one-two finish in the San Felipe, Baffert said, “We're trying to develop these horses, so it was good for both of them. Wine Me Up ran tough. It's like watching the 49ers Super Bowl game. Unfortunately, someone has to lose, but I'm proud of them both. They both showed up. That's all you can ask for.”

Wine Me Up was fastest out of the gate and had the lead in the early strides, but Imagination, the 4-5 favorite, strode up to challenge for the lead into the first turn.

Scatify (Justify), who broke from the rail in the four-horse field found himself in tight quarters off Wine Me Up's heels with Mc Vay (Constitution) pressing him from the outside. Rattled in the right quarters, he came out into the first turn, knocking Imagination and forcing Mc Vay wide into the bend. Hector Berrios took a strong hold of Scatify down the backstretch and that colt took back to the rear of the field.

Imagination, meanwhile, had recovered his momentum and took a length advantage over his stablemate as the half went up in :47.04. Wine Me Up moved back on even turns with the favorite and the two turned for home together. Imagination looked to be getting the better of his rival in upper stretch, but Wine Me Up along the rail battled back on even terms and it was a ding-dong battle to the finish.

“He broke out and we went to the clubhouse turn the guy behind me struck into me,” said winning jockey Frankie Dettori. “My horse got frightened, and I took him back to get him wide to get him to relax and get him back into the race. He fought a great duel. He was full of heart.”

Tom Ryan of SF Racing, co-owner of the winner, admitted he wasn't sure who had won the photo finish, but he found plenty to be positive about Imagination's effort.

“That was a great race,” Ryan said. “I didn't know which way it went at the wire. It was a little bit of a messy race early on, he had to recollect himself. He kind of got scared, these are young 3-year-old colts, they are learning their craft. It is amazing you could have a 12-horse field and nothing, and in a four-horse field anything can happen.

“It's good to see him have the confidence to put it back together and not back down from a fight and get there at the wire. I think there is a lot of potential in this horse. He is just learning as he goes, and I think the farther the better. He is a classy colt, he's always shown it, he looks it and thankfully his ability matches his looks.”

A $1.05-million Keeneland September yearling, Imagination opened his career with a pair of runner-up efforts at Del Mar late last year. He graduated going one mile at Santa Anita on New Year's Day and missed by just a neck to stablemate and 'TDN Rising Star' Maymun (Frosted) in a one-mile allowance Feb. 11.

 

Pedigree Notes:

Spendthrift's all-conquering Into Mischief was represented by the second and third-place finishers in Saturday's GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream Park and his son Timberlake put himself firmly on the Kentucky Derby trail this year with a win in the GII Rebel S. last weekend.

Magical Feeling, the fourth generation of this family bred by Peter Blum, is the dam of last year's GIII Monmouth Oaks winner and GI Acorn S. third Occult (Into Mischief). She has a yearling colt by Gun Runner, but aborted a Flightline foal for this year.

The cross of Into Mischief over Empire Maker mares has resulted in 29 winners from 43 starters and now has seven stakes winners, including Saturday's G3 Burj Nahaar winner Laurel River. As noted by Alan Carasso in Sunday's TDN, the cross has also been represented by GI Kentucky Derby hero Mandaloun, the Grade II winners Occult, Center Aisle and Taraz.

‘TDN Rising Star’ Maymun Wins Pitched Optional Claimer Battle Over Stablemate At Santa Anita

6th-Santa Anita, $68,206, Alw (NW1$X), Opt. Clm ($100,000), 2-11, 3yo, 1m, 1:36.65, ft, neck.
MAYMUN (c, 3, Frosted–Handwoven, by Indian Charlie) was a no-brainer 'TDN Rising Star' when streaking home to a 7 1/2-length graduation as a 1-2 mortal going 6 1/2 furlongs Jan. 20 and was trying two turns for the first time on Super Bowl Sunday. The 93 Beyer he received for that effort towered over his four rivals, and at 3-10, the Zedan runner won the break, but bore out badly into the first turn, bothering stablemate Imagination (Into Mischief). The pace was moderate at best–the opening quarter was up in :23.91 and the half in :48.07–and Flavien Prat launched something of a sneak attack aboard Imagination, drawing even with a flat-footed Maymun at the three-eighths pole. The duo quickened away from their three rivals nearing the stretch, but the favorite appeared to be in deep water down at the inside, as Imagination stuck his head in front nearing the eighth pole going the better of the two. The margin was as much as a half-length with time ticking away, but Juan Hernandez extracted that little bit extra and Maymun was up in the final few strides. A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling, Maymun turned heads at last year's OBS April Sale, ultimately hammering to Zedan for $900,000. Bred on a variant of the cross responsible for Horse of the Year Flightline (Tapit), Maymun has a 2-year-old half-brother by Kantharos and his dam was most recently covered by Violence. Sunday Insights: Pin Oak’s Revised Statute Picks Tough Spot For Debut

Richard Mandella has ambitiously spotted REVISED STATUTE (Consitition) for his debut Sunday. The colt set expectations high when he nearly topped the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling sale, selling to Pin Oak Stud for $1,800,000. A son of GI Madison S. winner and $1.5m NEENOV broodmare Last Full Measure, Revised Statute is a half to GI Juddmonte Spinster S. heroine Valiance (Tapit), herself a $3m FTKNOV broodmare purchase. His second dam is Lazy Slusan, also a dual Grade I winner. Revised Statute will need to bring his best on debut as he lines up just to the inside of a pair of more-experienced Bob Baffert stablemates including $900,000 OBSAPR buy and 'TDN Rising Star' Maymun (Frosted) along with $1.05m KEESEP yearling Imagination (Into Mischief). Another big KEESEP purchse, Last Episode (Into Mischief) went for $900,000 and starts over the grass for Todd Pletcher and the partnership of WinStar Farm and Siena Farm at Gulfstream. The filly is a half to champion 2-year-old colt Shanghai Bobby (Harlan's Holiday) and to the dam of MGSW Canoodling (Pioneerof the Nile). Monday Insights: New 3-Year-Olds Look To Graduate On New Year’s Day

Starting the New Year off in Louisiana, WHO'S TICKET (Quality Road) is a daughter of champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi, a mare who has changed hands for sums of $6m, $3.2m and most recently in 2021 when Three Chimneys Farm went to $1.15m for her. Who's Ticket, herself a $450,000 weanling, is a half to SW Courvoisier (Tapit). Take Charge Brandi has seen her branch of the family tree grow more fruitful recently with the success of her half-brother, freshman sire Omaha Beach (War Front), at stud. And of course, third dam Take Charge Lady needs no introduction as the dam of champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song), GISW and sire Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah). Her daughter also produced MGSW/GISP Charge It (Tapit)

Juddmonte homebred Impel (Quality Road) debuts for trainer Brad Cox. The filly is the first foal out of stakes-winning Your Love (Flatter) who was purchased by Juddmonte for $480,000 out of the 2019 KEENOV sale. Your Love is a full-sister to GSW/GISP Economic Model and a half to MSW Jimmy Simms (Lost Soldier), GSW/GISP Happy American (Runhappy) and GSW/GISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon).

Tipsy Tammy (Arrogate), a $600,000 KEESEP yearling for Rigney Racing, is a half to MSW Doc Boy (Into Mischief) along with three other winners from as many to race. Second dam Perfect Sting, 2000's champion grass mare, also produced GSW Smart Sting (Smart Strike). TJCIS PPS

Out west, a pair of Baffert colts look to improve on their 2023 starts led by Imagination (Into Mischief). The $1.05m yearling has raced twice at Del Mar through the fall, just missing by a neck most recently over the same distance Dec. 2. The colt is a half to MSW Exulting (Tapit) and a full-brother to GSW/GISP Occult.

Also looking to improve for Baffert is Cornell (Into Mischief), a $675,000 yearling who stretches out to the mile off a non-factoring ninth on debut at Del Mar Nov. 25.

John Sadler brings back Indispensable (Constitution) who ran second to 'TDN Rising Star' Coach Prime (Quality Road) last out at Del Mar Nov. 10 in his third start since bringing $825,000 at KEESEP last year.

The only debut runner in the field, Leading (Uncle Mo) is a Repole Stable homebred out of SW/GISP Savings Account. The dam, purchased by Repole for $800,000 in 2018 from FTKNOV, has already produced a winner from her first foal. TJCIS PPS
