Godolphin’s Hurricane Lane Bought By Coolmore As National Hunt Sire

Dual Classic winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Gale Force {GB}, by Shirocco {Ger}) will stand in 2024 under Coolmore's National Hunt banner after being purchased from Godolphin this week.

Bred by Philippa Cooper's Normandie Stud and born and raised at Coolmore, the three-time Group 1 winner was purchased by Godolphin for 200,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. Sent into training with Charlie Appleby, the March foal broke his maiden at first asking at Newmarket in October of 2020, and was an undefeated winner of the G2 Dante S., his third start, in 2021. Third in the G1 Derby, Hurricane Lane rattled off the G1 Irish Derby, G1 Grand Prix de Paris, and the G1 St Leger in succession later that summer and was a close third in the G1 Grand Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Kept in training at four, he added a third in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot and was also first in the G2 Jockey Club S. at five. His record stands at 13-7-0-3 with $2,792,161 in earnings.

“We are delighted to get Hurricane Lane,” Coolmore's Cathal Murphy said. “He's a fine, big, good-moving horse with a pedigree and race record to match. He's one of the best sons of Frankel to date and comes from a leading Aga Khan family. His dam by Shirocco won a listed race at Saint-Cloud and her half-sister Seal Of Approval (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) won a Group 1 on British Champions Day.”

A full-brother to the stakes-placed mare Frankel's Storm (GB), Hurricane Lane is from the extended family of dual Derby winner and sire Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

“Hurricane Lane is a very good-looking son of Frankel with plenty of scope and a good action,” added Appleby. “He showed a great constitution throughout his career and was a wonderful racehorse who gave us many great days.”

Epsom: Savethelastdance Readied For Oaks Bid

Aidan O'Brien has the key member of the G1 Betfred Oaks again as the certain favourite Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) drew stall four for the Epsom Classic, which will have 11 starters on Friday. Taking out a trio at Wednesday's final stage including the Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies' Trial S. scorer Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the Ballydoyle handler left the smart duo Be Happy (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Red Riding Hood (Ire) (Justify) in support of the impressive Listed Cheshire Oaks winner. “You don't take anything for granted, it's a different track and different ground so it's going to be very interesting for us all, O'Brien said of the filly who dazzled in the mud at Chester. “She'll be leaving this evening and that's gone fine, so we hope everything goes well between now and the race.”

“It's going to be very exciting to see what she does do,” he added. “When you go up in distance there are a lot of different things that can happen. If you looked at her pedigree, you'd say 'definitely not soft ground', but she bends her knee a little bit and she rises her feet which helped her to handle it. It's going to be very interesting to see how she fares on totally different ground. She just kept accelerating at Chester and I think that makes it unusual, so we're looking forward to the Oaks the same as everyone else.”

O'Brien's Epsom record suggests the outsiders have to be taken seriously, especially with both the remaining entries having placed in pattern races. “Red Riding Hood will take her time, she has blinkers on her and she doesn't concentrate much when she gets to the front,” he continued. “Be Happy ran well at Lingfield and we were very happy with that run, the pace was a bit slower than we would have liked for her but we've been very happy with her since then.”

 

Not On Her Dance Card…
Wednesday's other notable withdrawal was Jaber Abdullah's Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}) from the Charlie Johnston stable, leaving the opposition to Savethelastdance headed by Lady Bamford's G3 Musidora S. winner Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) who has drawn the “lucky” stall 10 as Frankie Dettori's final Oaks ride. Fellow John and Thady Gosden-trained Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) is in the largely-unfavourable stall two, with the inside draw considered a major hindrance even allowing for the recent Epsom performances of Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

 

Quality Quintet For Coronation Cup…
Friday's G1 Dahlbury Coronation Cup looks a high-class affair, with the quintet including Juddmonte's G1 Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the fellow group 1 winners Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Aidan O'Brien looks to TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who has captured the G3 Alleged S. and G2 Huxley S. in two 4-year-old starts. “We think a mile and a half will suit him well and we knew a mile and a quarter would be tight for him around Chester last time, but we wanted to run him there to try and sharpen him up,” he explained. “He went there to learn about going quicker on a left-handed track and we think it worked. From day one, he's looked like a horse who's crying out to go this kind of a trip.”

Hurricane Lane Steps Out Of The Last Chance Saloon

Newmarket's G2 Jockey Club S. is generally a tactical affair and Friday's renewal was no different as Godolphin's Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was able to boss another uninspiring renewal and bound back to form in no uncertain terms. Leaving connections pondering retirement after a no-show in Newbury's G3 John Porter S. last month, the 2021 Irish Derby, Grand Prix de Paris and St Leger hero was understandably lacking believers as the 2-1 second favourite for this five-runner affair.

With the even-money favourite West Wind Blows (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) giving negative signals resenting restraint in behind and outsider Outbox (GB) (Frankel {GB}) going it alone on the lead far side, it became a question of how much enthusiasm Hurricane Lane retained with just stablemate Global Storm (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) to track in what resembled a strong piece of work. That was answered with a look at William Buick's body language passing the half-mile marker and no sooner had he moved on the chestnut was the contest settled. Looking strong as he eked out a six-length advantage over the disappointing West Wind Blows, who was subsequently demoted behind Global Storm, the 5-year-old may well have enjoyed a turn in the road whose significance may only be fully appreciated later this term.

“It's been a great team effort to get the horse back, but we believed in ourselves and the horse–it was D-day for him, but throughout the Winter and into his Spring, his old demeanour had been there,” a relieved Charlie Appleby said. “We've always stated that he likes cut in the ground, but not like Newbury and that was a big ask on his first run after such a long lay-off. William said he was a different horse today and much more athletic. He worked midweek with those cheekpieces on and we were hopeful we would see that today. We will see if he is a Hardwicke horse in the summer, if the ground comes right. I always said I wanted to work back from an Arc. That might be a bit bold, but we will see.”

The second dam Hannda (Ire) (Dr Devious {Ire}) produced the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. heroine Seal Of Approval (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}), who is in turn the dam of the G3 March S. and G3 Princess Royal S.-placed Promissory (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while another of Gale Force's half-siblings is the G3 Oak Tree S. third Instance (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who produced the listed-placed Sound Angela (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}).

Hannda, who is kin to the G3 Concorde S. winner Hamairi (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), hails from the family of the Derby and Irish Derby-winning sire Harzand (Ire) and another British Champions Fillies & Mares heroine in Emily Upjohn (GB) both by Sea The Stars (Ire). Gale Force, who was bought for 300,000gns by Charlie Gordon Watson Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, also has the unraced 3-year-old filly Brisbane Road (GB) (Australia {GB}).
