Uncle Mo Colt Tops Third Session Of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale

A colt by champion sire Uncle Mo topped the third session of the Kentucky October Yearlings sale Wednesday in Lexington, Ky.

A son of record-breaking champion freshman sire of 2015 proved most popular on Wednesday, fetching a top price of $600,000 from Donato Lanni, agent (video).

The dark bay or brown colt was offered as Hip 1131 by Lane's End, agent. The session topper is a half-brother to English stakes winner Wind Fire (Distorted Humor) out of a winning full-sister to Grade 1 winner Majestic Warrior and stakes winner and multiple stakes producer Crystal Current. Hip 1131 was bred in Kentucky by Kinsman Farm.

The second-highest price of the day was paid for a colt by leading sire Into Mischief, purchased by Spendthrift Farm from the consignment of Paramount Sales, agent (video).

Offered as Hip 1147, the bay colt is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Yara, dam of undefeated 2-year-old stakes winner of 2020 Moon Swag. Hip 1147 was bred in Florida by Bulldog Racing and Gabriel Duignan.

Nine other yearlings sold for $200,000 or more during the sale's third session, including:

  • Hip 844, a colt from the first crop of multiple Grade 2 winner Mohaymen, sold for $315,000 to Trade Winds Farm from the consignment of Hunter Valley Farm, agent. A half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Got Stormy, Hip 844 was bred in Kentucky by Mt. Joy Stables, Pope McLean, Marc McLean, and Pope McLean Jr. The colt was a $145,000 selected weanling purchase by Redly Bloodstock at last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale, where he was consigned by Pope McLean, agent.
  • Hip 1040, a filly by successful young sire Maclean's Music, sold for $280,000 to JCM Racing from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. A half-sister to four winners from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Code of Honor, Hip 1040 was bred in Kentucky by Athens Woods LLC.

Expo Gold, Dam Of Preakness Winner Swiss Skydiver, To Be Offered At Keeneland November Sale

Expo Gold, whose daughter Swiss Skydiver made history yesterday by winning the $1 million Preakness Stakes, will be offered in foal to multiple Grade 1 winner Catholic Boy on Nov. 9 during the premier Book 1 of Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale.

The 12-year-old daughter of Johannesburg will be consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

“Swiss Skydiver's Preakness win puts her in rarified air alongside other iconic fillies like Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra and Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors,” said Mark Taylor, Taylor Made's Vice President of Marketing and Public Sales Operations. “We are excited to offer her dam, Expo Gold, at Keeneland in November. Her mating to Catholic Boy follows the same cross as Swiss Skydiver and as Expo Gold's 4-year-old stakes-placed filly, Miss Hot Legs.”

In the Preakness, Swiss Skydiver outdueled Kentucky Derby winner Authentic in a thrilling stretch battle and won the 1 3/16-mile race by a neck in 1:53.28 – second only to Secretariat's stakes record of 1:53 from 1973. Only the sixth filly to win the Preakness, Swiss Skydiver showed that same grit against males in Keeneland's Grade 2 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, when she led male rivals through zippy fractions before settling for the runner-up spot in a field of 13.

Swiss Skydiver is a headliner of her generation, and she has drawn comparisons to Hall of Fame fillies for her gallantry against male rivals. This year, Swiss Skydiver also has won the G1 Alabama, G2 Santa Anita Oaks, G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks and G3 Fantasy, and she was second in the Kentucky Oaks and the Toyota Blue Grass.

“The 2020 Preakness showcased the heart and tenacity of two great Thoroughbreds, and we'll never forget their stretch battle,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin. “Keeneland is so proud that our September Yearling Sale produced both Swiss Skydiver and Authentic, and now we are especially honored to be able to offer Swiss Skydiver's dam, Expo Gold, at the November Sale.”

Expo Gold is in foal to the promising young stallion Catholic Boy, who, like Swiss Skydiver's sire, Daredevil, is a son of the internationally acclaimed More Than Ready. Catholic Boy was a Grade 1 winner on turf and dirt before launching his stud career in 2020.

While Swiss Skydiver is becoming a racehorse for the ages, Expo Gold boasts a lineage rich with quality. Her sire, Johannesburg, is the broodmare sire of such additional standouts as Grade 1 winners Basin and Collected. Her graded stakes-placed dam is a reliable producer of winners, one of which is already a stakes producer.

In addition to Expo Gold, two other members of Swiss Skydiver's family are cataloged to Book 1 of the November Sale:

  • Half-sister Is It Gold, a winning daughter of Indygo Shiner in foal to Nyquist, is consigned by South Point Sales Agency, agent.
  • Hunter Valley Farm agent, consigns the aforementioned Miss Hot Legs, a daughter of Verrazano (another son of More Than Ready), as a broodmare prospect.

Quality Road Filly Tops First Session Of Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase At $1.5 Million

The 2020 yearling sales season kicked off on a sunny pre-autumn day Wednesday with the first session of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase in Lexington, Ky.

A filly by Quality Road topped the session when sold for $1.5 million to Robbie Medina, agent for Joseph Allen.

Offered as Hip 232 by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, the filly is out of Irish One Thousand Guineas winner Marvelous. That daughter of Galileo, who has already produced a stakes winner in Fort Myers, is out of Group 2 winner You'resothrilling, a full-sister to European Horse of the Year and successful sire Giant's Causeway. Marvellous is a full-sister to Group 1 winners Gleneagles and Happily, as well as to group stakes winners Taj Mahal and Coolmore. The session-topper was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt.

The session's top colt was Hip 274, a son of 2019 leading sire Into Mischief, sire of this year's Kentucky Derby winner Authentic. Dr. Dermot O'Byrne purchased the top colt for $700,000 from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent. The colt is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Made You Look, out of an Unbridled's Song daughter of champion Serena's Song. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Lewis Thoroughbred Breeding.

Also sold at that price was a daughter of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. Donato Lanni, agent for Michael Lund Petersen, purchased the filly, offered as Hip 285, from the consignment of Blue Heaven Farm. The filly is out of graded stakes winner Our Khrysty, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Bullsbay from the immediate family of Grade 1 winning millionaire Grecian Flight. The filly was bred in Kentucky by the consignor.

The session opened with an offering of preferred New York-bred yearlings. Those Empire-state breds were topped by a son of Tiznow purchased for $300,000 by Jack Knowlton of Sackatoga Stable, who purchased this year's Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law at the New York Bred Yearlings sale in 2018.

Offered as Hip 135 by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, the Tiznow colt is a half-brother to three stakes horses, including Grade 2 winner Bye Bye Bernie. His dam, the stakes placed Gilded Time mare Eternal Grace, is a half-sister to the dam of New York-bred graded stakes winner Control Group. Hip 135 was bred in New York by Barry R. Ostrager.

The second-highest price in the New York-bred section was Hip 71, a colt by Candy Ride purchased for $295,000 by Dr. Dermot O'Byrne from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. The colt is the second foal out of the unraced Any Given Saturday mare Sweet Love, a full sister to graded stakes winner Adventist and a half-sister to three other stakes winners. Hip 71 was bred in New York by Joe Fafone.

The first session grossed $27,166,000 from 172 yearlings sold. The average was $157,942 and the median was $100,000.

“Statistically, we had no expectations,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “It's impossible to know how to compare this sale to the 2019 results. What we hoped to achieve was to have a viable marketplace, to have commerce to be conducted amongst buyers and sellers, to create an environment to help restore some confidence in the marketplace and provide it some stability and foundation for the 2020 yearling sales, and we're only halfway through. I'm going to be cautious in my overall analysis at this point, but I'm very, very encouraged.

“I think anytime you start a sale, there's a little bit of trepidation, and it takes a little bit of time to find its way, to get a little confidence, and I think that was certainly the case today, but as we progressed through the day, people gained more and more confidence,” he continued. “I think people have rolled up their sleeves, both buyers and sellers, and demonstrated that the game's alive and well. Hopefully we'll have a strong day tomorrow.”

Session results are available online. The Selected Yearlings Showcase continues Sept. 10 at 10 a.m..
