Jockey/Horsemen Basketball Game In Saratoga Aug. 4

Edited Press Release

The 13th annual jockeys-versus-horsemen charity basketball game, which benefits the programs of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy (NYRTC), will be played Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m.

The game is one of the most popular events on the Saratoga social calendar and routinely attracts more than 300 fans. Admission is free.

The jockey team will once again be coached by Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, Jr., with trainer Todd Pletcher and agent Kiaran McLaughlin coaching the horsemen team. Mitch Levites will serve as the announcer and provide lively commentary.

“This game is always immensely fun and beyond that, it raises much-needed funds to support our various programs,” said Humberto Chavez, the New York Chaplaincy lead chaplain and executive director. “Saratogians and so many of the fans who spend time in Saratoga have been great supporters of those who take care of the horses behind the scenes.”

Fans will be able to participate in raffles and one lucky fan will leave with a custom, autographed bobblehead of champion jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

NYRTC provides the backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, and recreational programs, as well as educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services.

Horsemen, individuals, or organizations who would like to sponsor the game may do so via the NY Chaplaincy website at www.rtcany.org or by contacting Eleanor Poppe at info@rtcany.org or 516-428-5267.

NY Race Track Chaplaincy Seeks Support for Summer Enrichment Program

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy is seeking support for their Summer Enrichment Program for children of backstretch workers in order to help keep families together during the Saratoga season, and to give children an opportunity to experience something they may have never had before: a summer away from the city and from the track.

No child is turned away from the program, which meets critical needs for the families that the Chaplaincy serves. The program is solely supported by contributions from the public.

Those interested may click here to donate any amount, or click here to sponsor a child for one day, one week, one month, or the entire summer.

Humberto Chavez, Lead Chaplain and Executive Director of the NY Chaplaincy, said the program is very close to his heart.

“Thanks to the Saratoga Summer Enrichment Program, members of the backstretch community who are parents are able to keep their families together and know their children are well-cared-for while they are at work. The peace of mind this provides is something every parent can appreciate and support. We turn away no one and are very grateful to everyone who makes this program possible.”

Over 3,500 people make up the community of workers on the backstretches of the thoroughbred racing industry at Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack, and Saratoga Race Course.  The New York Race Track Chaplaincy ministers to that community with children's enrichment, social service, and recreational programs, educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services. The Chaplaincy provides these extensive services with the intent of satisfying not only spiritual needs but also basic human necessities, and its unique population is served without regard to race, creed, religion, background, or social status.

NY Chaplaincy To Honor Andy Serling For Devotion To Backstretch Community

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy announced today that it will honor Andy Serling, New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) television analyst and handicapper, for his generous and continued devotion to the backstretch community at its 15th annual fund-raising brunch scheduled to be held on August 17, 2022, at Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, NY.

“At every opportunity, Andy goes out of his way to recognize and advocate for the members of the backstretch community and he richly deserves this honor,” said Humberto Chavez, the lead chaplain and executive director for the NY Chaplaincy.

Serling has been offering his handicapping insights on the NYRA circuit as a member of the broadcast team since 2008. The Manhattan resident is a Sr. Racing Analyst on America's Day at the Races, which presents coverage of NYRA racing on the networks of FOX Sports, and as the host of NYRA's daily handicapping show Talking Horses. Serling also hosts the Across the Board podcast, launched in April 2017.

Prior to working in the racing industry, Serling traded options on the floor of the American Stock Exchange when he wasn't spending his days at the track.

“I love this sport and with each passing day, I have a deeper appreciation for the commitment and dedication of backstretch workers,” Serling said. “The New York Race Track Chaplaincy does incredible work for our community and I'm humbled to be honored in this way.”

Previous honorees of the NY Chaplaincy have included Anne Campbell, Edgar Prado, Michael Dubb, Fay and David Donk, Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, Letty and Kiaran McLaughlin, Lisa and Kenny Troutt, Debbie and Terry Finley, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and, last year, Irad Ortiz Jr.

The honoree is presented with a print by equine artist Tom Chapman at the brunch, which typically draws approximately 200 supporters of the NY Race Track Chaplaincy.

The NY Race Track Chaplaincy serves the NY backstretch and farming community with children's enrichment, social service, recreational, and educational programming as well as non-denominational religious services.

Rising COVID Rates Force Cancellation Of New York Race Track Chaplaincy’s Charity Basketball Game

The 13th annual jockeys-versus-horsemen charity basketball game, which benefits the programs of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy and was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Sept. 1, has been canceled, the organization announced today.

“With COVID-19 infection rates climbing again, we just couldn't jeopardize the safety of the participants or the hundreds of fans who come to the game each year, so we decided it was best to cancel it once again,” said NY Race Track Chaplaincy executive director and lead chaplain Humberto Chavez. “We are all disappointed but hopefully we can resume the tradition next summer during the Saratoga meet.”

The game, which was not able to be played last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of the most popular events on the Saratoga social calendar and it routinely attracts more than 300 fans.

The jockey team is usually coached by Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr., with trainer Todd Pletcher and agent Kiaran McLaughlin coaching the horsemen team. Mitch Levites of the NYRA television department serves as the announcer and provides lively commentary.

Proceeds from this event serve to benefit signature programs of the NY Race Track Chaplaincy.

The NY Race Track Chaplaincy provides the backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, and recreational programs, as well as educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services.

Horsemen, individuals, or organizations who would like to make a donation to the NY Chaplaincy may do so via the NY Chaplaincy website at www.rtcany.org or by contacting Eleanor Poppe at info@rtcany.org or 516-428-5267.
