‘TDN Rising Star’ Nash Wins Easily In Hot Springs S.

Nash, named a 'TDN Rising Star' after a 10 1/4-length romp in a 1 1/16-mile Churchill Downs maiden special weight Nov. 12, resumed winning ways after three straight placings at Fair Grounds this season. Nash was second behind Track Phantom (Quality Road) in the GIII Lecomte Jan. 20, then second again in a live optional claimer over a sloppy surface at Fair Grounds Feb. 17. Jockey Florent Geroux settled the even-money favorite four-wide behind Frost Free's pace set in fractions of :23.15, :47.64 and 1:12.56. Remaining four wide throughout, he swept past three of his six rivals entering the stretch and drew off to a comfortable win. Nash is out of MGSW Sara Louise, who defeated future champion Rachel Alexandra in the GII Pocahontas S. as a 2-year-old. Sara Louise is also the dam of Mrs. Hudson (Street Cry {Ire}), dam of SW Airosa (Uncle Mo) and Coronation Street (Street Cry {Ire}), dam of GSW Kalik (Collected). She has an unnamed 2-year-old Street Sense colt and was bred to Nyquist for this season.

Lookin At Lucky’s Eyeing Clover Rebounds in Hot Springs

Fresh off a fourth-place finish behind Raise Cain (Violence) in the Mar. 4 GIII Gotham S. at Aqueduct, Eyeing Clover (c, 3, Lookin At Lucky–Floral Park, by Forest Wildcat) got a black-type win of his own in Oaklawn's Hot Springs S. Saturday. It was blinkers off for the chestnut, who encountered his share of trouble throughout. He broke like a shot, leaping straight to the early lead for a few brief strides until the pair of Rocking Rocket (American Pharoah) and Cactus (Twirling Candy) hounded him with the latter coming over and appearing to step straight into his path. Eyeing Clover steadied and looked to turn a bit rank but didn't throw in the towel. As the first quarter and half ticked by in :23.01 and :46.85, he regained his rail position, shifted outside when he found some room, and moved disdainfully by the original duo that caused him trouble. Eyeing Clover took control, drifted slightly in the lane, and was chased home by Gun Pilot (Gun Runner), whom he held comfortably at bay by a length. It was another 6 1/2 lengths back to Cactus.

“He broke very sharp, put me in a good spot,” said winning pilot Florent Geroux. “I let those two horses in front of me go, dictate [the pace]. The first turn was a little bit messy to be honest. Nice trip down the backside, relaxed. When those horses in front of me started getting tired, I just took over and took command. He was brave. [Gun Pilot] was making a nice run and my horse held him off…. He ran good. A mile, to be honest, is probably about as far as he wants to go.”

Prior to his unplaced Gotham, Eyeing Clover was unbeaten. After a sharp debut over six furlongs Dec. 31 at Oaklawn, he shipped to Fair Grounds for an optional allowance Jan. 28 at the same distance to romp by 9 3/4 lengths and register an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. The Gotham, at the same mile distance as the Hot Springs, was his first start beyond six furlongs.

Eyeing Clover is the fourth black-type winner for his dam, whose GSW Heavenhasmynikki (Majestic Warrior) sold for $775,000 in foal to Into Mischief at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale and was sent to Japan after Katsumi Yoshida signed the ticket. The mare has a yearling filly by American Pharoah and was bred back to Uncle Mo for this spring. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Oaklawn Celebrates ‘Whitmore Day’ in ’22

Oaklawn will celebrate 2020 champion sprinter Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) with Whitmore Day, held at Oaklawn Park Mar. 19. The afternoon will be highlighted by the $200,000 Whitmore S., formerly named the Hot Springs S. Whitmore Day will also feature an appearance by Whitmore, in addition to t-shirt giveaways, and the first 5,000 fans will receive a commemorative Whitmore baseball card. Whitmore won the six-furlong race four times during his career for trainer Ron Moquett's Southern Springs Stable, Robert LaPenta, and Head of Plain Partners LLC. Victorious in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint during his championship season, the chestnut also won the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. three times at Oaklawn. He retired last month with 15 wins from 43 starts and earnings of $4,502,350.

Also in honor of Whitmore, the Count Fleet barn, which was Whitmore's winter home for six years, will be renamed the Whitmore barn.

“Oaklawn has always been my home track and it was Whitmore's home track, so it's a huge honor to have a stakes race named for him here,” said Moquett. “He was a hard-knocking horse that a lot of people could easily root for whether they put a bet on him or not. The amount of support we have received since his retirement has been overwhelming.”

Whitmore to Make ’21 Debut in Hot Springs S.

The freshly-minted Eclipse Award winning sprinter Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) will try to add to his seven Oaklawn stakes wins this winter, according to part-owner–along with Bob LaPenta and Head of Plains Partners–and trainer Rron Moquett. Whitmore punctuated his 2020 campaign with a dominating victory in the Nov. 7 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland.

“I think the reaction that we get from the rest of the people kind of mimics how we feel all the time about him,” Moquett said Friday morning. “It's like everybody's giving him credit, loving him or whatever. But Arkansas people kind of already thought that he was a champion, regardless, and it's kind of like the rest of world got to see what we've been thinking for three years.”

Among the gelding's 2020 Oaklawn starts, he took the Hot Springs S. last March-winning for a record fourth consecutive year–and a record third GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. in April.

Moquett confirmed Friday that the 8-year-old, who is currently in training at Oaklawn, will target a similar path in 2021 as to his championship season, beginning with the Hot Springs S. Mar. 13. Whitmore's major spring objective, according to Moquett, is again the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. April 10. Both races are at six furlongs.

“Still the plan,” Moquett said. “He's going to run a mile and a half at Oaklawn [this winter].”
